LG G2 gets benchmarked with Android 6.0 Marshmallow on board

Just a few days ago LG led us to believe that the G3 and G4 would be getting updates to Android 6.0 Marshmallow pretty soon, since the Korean company has already referenced them in its support documents for the devices.

And now, in a surprising development, it looks like the older G2 could be receiving the latest version of Android as an update at some point in the future. The G2 is already two years old so this would be unexpected for its owners.

An LG G2 running Android 6.0 has been seen in the database of Geekbench, one of the most well-known benchmarks for Google’s mobile OS. So someone is clearly testing such an update. Of course, even if this is real (such benchmark runs aren’t impossible to fake), LG could simply give up on the thought of bringing Marshmallow to the G2 in the future. So don’t get your hopes up just yet.

LG hasn’t been a fan of Android 5.1, as it hasn’t updated either the G3 or the G2 to this release, so perhaps the company wants to skip that iteration of the OS and jump straight to 6.0.

Microsoft Surface tablets will be sold in India starting in February 2016

According to two separate reports coming in today, Microsoft has decided to take its Surface line of tablets to India. Sales of the Surface devices in the subcontinent are apparently set to start in February 2016.

That’s still quite far off, but at least the software giant is rumored to be taking all of its Surface models to India – including the Surface Pro 4 that could become official at an event tomorrow. The Surface Pro 3 will be offered alongside it.

The tablets will be sold at Microsoft Priority stores across the country. These have previously been known as Nokia Priority stores, but have been rebranded recently, following Microsoft’s acquisition of Nokia’s mobile device business. The Priority stores currently sell Lumia handsets and they also showcase Windows 10 laptops from other manufacturers, in a bid to popularize the latest version of Microsoft’s OS and its associated ecosystem.

Moto X Style will launch in India on October 8 according to new teaser

Of the duo of Moto X smartphones announced this year by Motorola, the Moto X Play is already available in India. On the other hand, the high-end Moto X Style isn’t yet, but that may change very soon.

Motorola started teasing the launch of the Moto X Style in the subcontinent last week, and now it looks like we have an actual date to speak of. The image you can see below is a teaser put up by Flipkart, India’s biggest online retailer (which could be gearing up to exclusively offer this device).

Now all that remains to be seen is whether the Moto X Style will actually be available for purchase on October 8 or if that’s just the date of its announcement for the Indian market (in which case it’s going to be released later).

As for pricing, it’s expected to be in the INR 30,000-32,000 range (that’s about $460-491 or €411-439 right now).

Apple Watch Hermes collection is now available starting at $1,100

Huawei to unveil Honor 5X Play on October 10

In just a few days Huawei is apparently set to announce a new dirt cheap Honor-branded smartphone. This will be the new member of the Play family, which so far has included the cheapest Honor handsets. It will be called Honor 5X Play (or a variation of this, such as Honor Play 5X).

Huawei has officially announced that it’s holding an event on October 10, which will be all about a youth-focused phone. And since both previous Play offerings were also youth-oriented, it seems very likely that the Honor 5X Play will be the star of the show.

The phone has already been certified for sale in China by TENAA, and through that process most of its specs have been made public. Thus, the Honor 5X Play will come with a 5-inch 720p touchscreen, a 13 MP rear camera with LED flash, a 5 MP front snapper, MediaTek’s MT6735 SoC with 1.3 GHz quad-core CPU, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of expandable storage, and a big 4,000 mAh battery.

It will run Android 5.1 Lollipop underneath Huawei’s own Emotion UI skin. Its dimensions are 143.1 x 71.8 x 9.7 mm, it weighs 159g, has 4G LTE support and dual-SIM functionality. It’s expected to be sold for around CNY 999, which is $157 or €140 at the current exchange rates.

Android 6.0 Marshmallow factory images are out for Nexus devices

Google already announced that it would release Android 6.0 Marshmallow this week, and it looks like the company wants to start in force. That’s because it’s already made factory images of the new version available for the Nexus devices that are supported.

The images are up on Google’s specialized developer website, which is where you can also find instructions for flashing them. Keep in mind however that going this route will delete all data you’ve had on your phone or tablet, so make sure you back things up first.

The images are there for the LG Nexus 5, Motorola Nexus 6, Asus Nexus 7 (2013), HTC Nexus 9, and Asus Nexus Player. Older Nexus devices are not going to get official updates to Marshmallow, while the newly announced LG Nexus 5X and Huawei Nexus 6P will launch with it preinstalled.

Now that the factory images are available, expect over-the-air updates to start rolling out for the aforementioned devices within the next few days. Updating in this way will not wipe your data, so it’s an easier method compared to flashing images. On the other hand, Google’s OTA rollouts are generally very slow, so you will need to be patient if you choose this…

Arrow scratch test spares the iPhone 6s, dead on second try

Arms enthusiasts and slow-mo video specialists from FullMag have had another go at the brand new Apple iPhone 6s. Now, there’s plenty of attempted murders in the smartphone’s brief couple of weeks of availability, but it’s always entertaining to watch a novel method of destruction, in this case a Bear Archery Method bow.

The so called scratch test (remarkable what can pass as a test these days), has the iPhone 6s barely grazed by the arrow. The Ion-X glass does indeed suffer a 3cm scratch, but the phone has every chance of remaining functional, though it’s not explicitly shown in the video.

You didn’t think that the iPhone will walk out of this alive though, did you? The second shot is aimed perpendicular to its back and the archer shoots it dead center, despite initial claims that he’s “not that good of a… archer”.

Mind you, it’s not the first time the folks have taken down an iPhone 6s. In case you’ve missed those you can take a look how 7000-series aluminum fares against a 50 Caliber rifle or liquid nitrogen. Though you’re probably getting the…

Xiaomi CEO: Redmi Note 2 on track to reach 10 million sales

Xiaomi plans to sell 10 million phones this year and it’s well on its way to doing just that with yet another best-seller to its name. The Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 could soon reach 10 million sales, says company founder and CEO Ley Jun.

In a Weibo post he explains that the initial investment was high – buying all the equipment, ensuring product quality and consistency. But after that initial hurdle, manufacturing costs can be controlled much better.

That enabled the Redmi 2A – Xiaomi’s cheapest phone at $80 – which along with the Redmi 2 has sold over 13 million phones. The Redmi 4c also benefits from the automated production line that has been two years in the making.

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 sold 2.15 million units internationally in its first month, following a sale of 1.5 million and 800K before that.

Watch DOOM running on Apple TV and Apple Watch

‘But does it run DOOM?’ We’ve heard this question probably as many times as ‘Will it blend?’. Around the turn of the decade each electronic device had this initiation ritual, which required passing a very simple test – running the old-school classic DOOM.

The latest devices to past the test are Apple TV and Apple Watch. A few developers from Facebook’s office managed to port DOOM on both devices. It took them about 10 hours of hacking, but in the end – it is possible to have DOOM up and running on your Apple TV and Apple Watch.

John Carmack’s classic has gained a legendary status over the years and even today we are still witnessing people porting the game over various devices. There are even printers running the thins already. Here is hoping the microwave ovens are next, we know many people out there have been waiting patiently for this upgrade.
