YiSpector malware: Apple says issue was already fixed in iOS 8.4

Just a day after US-based cyber-security firm Palo Alto Network released details of the newly-discovered YiSpecter malware, Apple issued a formal statement on the matter, effectively indicating that the malware isn’t a major threat.

“This issue only impacts users on older versions of iOS who have also downloaded malware from untrusted sources,” the Cupertino-based company said. “We addressed this specific issue in iOS 8.4 and we have also blocked the identified apps that distribute this malware.”

The iPhone-maker also urged users to install the latest version of iOS and to only download from trusted sources like the App Store.

For those who aren’t aware, the YiSpecter malware is capable of downloading, installing, and launching arbitrary iOS apps, as well as displaying full screen advertisements whenever you execute a normal app. Researchers claimed that it targets both jailbroken and non-jailbroken iOS…

Latest YouTube for iOS update brings design overhaul, in-app editing tools

YouTube’s iOS app has started receiving an update, bumping it to version 10.38, and bringing a redesigned user interface, in-app editing tools, and some other features.

“With a new design, you can now have fun exploring videos you love more easily and quickly than before,” the app’s App Store description reads.

Similar to the Android update that rolled out a few months ago, the iOS update also adds three new tabs: Home, Subscriptions, and Account. While the first one lets you browse personal recommendations, the latter two allow you to see the latest from the ones you follow and look up videos you’ve watched, respectively.

The updated app also features new editing tools, allowing you to trim a video, as well as add filters and music to it. You can download the updated app from the App…

HTC unsurprisingly posted an operating loss in Q3 2015

HTC posted an operating loss of $138 million in Q3 2015. The troubled Taiwanese manufacturer recorded a small profit during the same period last year.

The company’s quarterly revenue came in at NT$21.4 billion (about $659 million). A year ago, HTC made NT$41.9 billion in revenue.

HTC has seen its sales and profits drop significantly over the past few months due to increased competition in all segments of the smartphone market. Recently, the former industry heavyweight announced major job cuts and dropped out of the TWSE 50 stock index in Taiwan.

Co-founder Jack Dorsey returns as Twitter’s new CEO

A few months after Twitter’s former CEO Dick Costolo stepped down from his position, the micro-blogging company has named co-founder and interim CEO Jack Dorsey for the post.

Dorsey – who had been Twitter’s CEO in the company’s early years, too – is currently also the chief executive and chairman of Square. In a securities filing, Twitter said that he will continue with his responsibilities at the payment start-up, and won’t be taking any compensation for his new role.

“I am honored by the trust the board has put in me to continue to run the company,” Dorsey said, adding that his focus would be on disciplined execution, simplifying the service, and communicating the company’s value to users.

While Dorsey will continue to be on Twitter’s board, he will no longer act as the company’s Chairman.

Verizon cancels the Sony Xperia Z4v

If you’re a fan of both Verizon and Sony smartphones, this is not good news for you. The carrier just abruptly announced that it’s canceling the release of the Xperia Z4v.

This handset was made official back in June as a Verizon-exclusive slightly improved version of the internationally-sold Xperia Z3+ and the Japan-only Xperia Z4. It was first supposed to go on sale in August, but that didn’t happen. Its release then got pushed back to October, and here we are.

Verizon hasn’t given a reason for its decision. It has, however, said that it will continue to have “ongoing discussions” with Sony for its future portfolio of devices. The Xperia Z4v was supposed to be a hero device for Sony in the US, a market in which it hasn’t been very successful lately.

The Xperia Z4v would have had a 5.2-inch QHD touchscreen, 20 MP rear camera, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 810 SoC at the helm, 3GB of RAM, and a 3,000 mAh…

Droid Maxx 2 will be Verizon’s Moto X Play, Google confirms

Verizon still hasn’t refreshed its Droid-branded line of exclusive Android devices this year, but that’s bound to happen in the next few weeks. Back in August many leaks and rumors claimed that the carrier’s upcoming Droid Maxx 2 would be nothing more than a rebranded Moto X Play. In fact, some leaked live images of the Droid Maxx 2 pretty much confirmed that beyond a reasonable doubt.

However, in case you somehow still weren’t sure of this, Google can help. See, someone at the search giant managed to inadvertently confirm the fact that the Droid Maxx 2 is just a Moto X Play by another name.

What you see above is a screenshot of the Google support page listing which Android devices are optimized for using the Cast Screen feature with the Chromecast. The second row spells things out, black on white, as it says “Droid Maxx 2 (Verizon) or Moto X Play (Rest of World)”. One and the same device, then.

The mishap has since been corrected by Google and any mention of the Droid Maxx 2 is now gone from that support page, but it’s pretty clear that someone at the company simply forgot that this handset isn’t official just yet. Hopefully that will change…

OnePlus USB Type-C cable finally becomes available for $5.49

At the end of July, OnePlus let the world know that it would start selling a standalone version of the USB Type-C cable that comes bundled with the OnePlus 2. Amusingly, this was supposed to happen “three weeks or so” after August 11, when the OnePlus 2 was going to launch.

The phone itself was then hit by delays, so it really isn’t surprising that the cable was delayed too. Though perhaps you wouldn’t have expected it to go from three weeks after August 11, to almost two months after that.

Anyway, the USB Type-C cable is finally up for grabs on OnePlus’ website, in two variants. A 100cm model can be yours for just $5.49 (or €5.49), while the 150cm cable is priced at $6.99 (or €6.99). They’re both in stock right now, but this being OnePlus it’s impossible to tell how long that will last. So if you need one of these (and they are pretty cheap), maybe you should grab one as soon as possible. After all, USB Type-C is the future, they say.

Although this cable has a USB Type-C connector on one end (the one that goes into your OnePlus 2 presumably), it has the well known USB Type-A connector at the other end – the one that people call ‘normal size’ USB and which you can plug into any computer, for example. The neat thing is that the OnePlus cable is reversible at both ends, so you never have to pay attention to which side is up ever…

Upcoming OnePlus Mini has all of its specs detailed

Before the end of the year, OnePlus will unveil a new, even more affordable device. This has so far been confirmed many times by the Chinese company’s management. Yet understandably OnePlus execs haven’t disclosed any information about the upcoming device’s specs.

That said, today a new rumor comes to seemingly reveal all of that. Before we delve into it, however, do note that all of this comes from an anonymous source, and as such you shouldn’t take any of it for granted. Furthermore, the source itself claims that these details are from a prototype that’s already two months old, which means that certain hardware specs may have changed in the meantime.

The phone could be called OnePlus Mini, since it will have a 5-inch touchscreen (with 1080p resolution and 2.5D Gorilla Glass on top). It will be powered by MediaTek’s Helio X10 chipset (MT6795T), which comes with a 2.2 GHz octa-core Cortex-A53 CPU.

2GB of RAM and 32GB of expandable eMMC 5.0 storage are in, but you can forget the previously talked about dual-camera setup. On the back we’ll see a 13 MP unit with a Sony IMX258 sensor with f/2.0 aperture, complemented by a dual-tone LED flash. The selfie shooter will have 5 MP resolution and will be of the wide-angle variety in order to fit as many people into your “groufies” as necessary.

The battery capacity is said to be 3,000 or 3,100 mAh, which you’ll charge through a USB Type-C port. Interestingly, some sort of quick charging support will be baked in, unlike in the more premium OnePlus 2. It’s the same situation with NFC and an IR blaster, both of which will be integrated into the OnePlus Mini despite not having made it to the bigger device.

A fingerprint sensor will be on the back of the OnePlus Mini, and the handset will also have a 1.2W front-facing speaker, an FM radio, and IP67 rating for water and dust resistance. Its shell will be plastic.

For all of this you’ll only need to pay around $250, if the source of this rumor has it right. The OnePlus Mini should become available in November or December, though it’s unclear if invites will be required for buying…
