According to a research conducted by Localytics, the iPhone 6s is selling far better than the iPhone 6s Plus in the first week of availability. The two devices already account for 1.9% of all Apple smartphones currently in use, but the iPhone 6s holds 1.5%, while the iPhone 6s Plus has just 0.4%.

HTC One E9s dual sim – a new model quietly launches

Here’s To Change – HTC’s motto, which the company took to heart. Small, continuous change and re-release of every model. This week it’s the HTC One E9s dual sim was put up on the HTC India website without any official announcement.

Not so much a variant of the One E9 – let alone a premium upgrade as the “s” suggests – this is more of a Desire 820 refresh. A 5.5″ 720p screen (the base E9 is at 1080p), thicker and heavier, but with a smaller battery than the E9, slower chipset too.

Comparing the HTC One E9s dual sim to the Desire 820 is slightly more favorable, but even then it’s not a clear win against the late-2014 model. And reading the fine text produces yet more facepalm moments – like leaving 8.5GB of user-available storage on a 16GB device.

Anyway, the phone packs a 13MP camera on the back plus a 4MP UltraPixel selfie shooter on the front, a MediaTek MT6752M chipset (octa-core at 1.5GHz, 2GB RAM) and LTE connectivity with two SIM cards. It has stereo speakers and Dolby audio too.

Yuphoria switches over to stock Android from Cyanogen, drops price

YU’s little honeymoon with Cyanogen Inc. seems to have come to an end. After releasing the Yunique last month with stock Android 5.1.1 Lollipop instead of Cyanogen OS, the company has now started selling the older Yuphoria with stock Android Lollipop instead of Cyanogen OS.

The new model is identified as YU5010A instead of YU5010 in the specs but you don’t have to worry about that as the older model is no longer being sold. Also, another thing to note is that the phone is now cheaper by INR 1,000, which means it now retails for INR 6499 ($100) instead of INR 7,499…

Why the Nexus phones don’t have Qi wireless charging: USB Type-C rocks

Part of the reason we liked the Nexus 5 (2013) so much was that it incorporated technology that wasn’t mainstream yet – things like OIS and wireless charging. So it was disappointing to see the new Nexus phones take a step back, but at least now we know why.

Hiroshi Lockheimer, Android VP of Engineering, explained the reasoning behind the move in a Reddit AMA. Essentially, microUSB was seen as slow and a hassle and wireless charging made sense. Now USB Type-C plugs is easier to plug in and charges the battery faster, plus dropping Qi wireless charging allowed the engineers to make the phone thinner.

Straight from the horse’s mouth:

…So, ease of plugging in + fast charging + optimizing for thinness made us double down on Type-C instead of wireless!

Now, the Nexus chargers are only 15W, while Oppo pushed 25W through microUSB 2.0 so the “fast charging” claim doesn’t stand.Plus we even have fast wireless chargers – not as fast as their wired counterparts, but much faster than what the Nexus 4 and 5 had.

Also, the Galaxy S6 is a full millimeter thinner than the Nexus 5X and it supports two wireless charging standards. True, its battery is 150mAh smaller, but I think making the phone 1mm thicker could easily have filled that in. So that’s dubious too. The Galaxy S6 edge+ is thinner than the Nexus 6P too, though the difference in thickness is smaller, while the difference in battery bigger.

The USB Type-C is indeed easier to plug in, there’s no reason for this to be an either-or situation. You can read the rest of the AMA here.

Microsoft Lumia 950XL will come with a removable battery

Microsoft’s long-overdue flagship smartphone announcement is scheduled for October 6 (yes, tomorrow) and we’re expecting the Lumia 950 and 950 XL to finally become official. The two devices have starred in a number of leaks, as well as a suspicious in-house campaign, which saw the phones “mistakenly” listed on official company sites.

Anyways, this latest bit is a little more shady, and appears to be a genuine leak. The lone photo pictures the larger Lumia 950XL with the back cover out of the way granting access to the removable battery. The cell is neatly tucked underneath the oversized camera module.

The other interesting piece of info is the battery capacity, which is claimed to be 3,340mAh. Now, while this seems like a reasonable capacity and may indeed be the actual number, a few flags get raised.

For one, the fonts seem inconsistent, between the “typical” and the “3340mAh”. Additionally, it makes little sense to print just the capacity on the front of an otherwise minimalist design, when there’s inevitably detailed information on the flip side. A safe bet would be that whoever took the shot knew the capacity and wanted to include it in the photo. Or be may be overly suspicious.

Whatever the case, the big news is the confirmation that the Lumia 950 XL will have a user-replaceable battery. The feature is becoming an increasingly rare sight among high-end smartphones, with LG the only one that is persisting with the G4 and the V10, so it’s good to know that Microsoft is in on it…

Newly discovered YiSpecter malware attacks both jailbroken and non-jailbroken iOS devices

Less than a month after Apple’s Chinese App store was found to be infected with XcodeGhost, security researchers have discovered a new malware that they claim targets both jailbroken and non-jailbroken iOS devices. Dubbed YiSpecter, the malware is said to affect iOS users in China as well as Taiwan.

“It spreads via unusual means, including the hijacking of traffic from nationwide ISPs, an SNS worm on Windows, and an offline app installation and community promotion,” revealed researchers at US-based cybersecurity firm Palo Alto Network.

The YiSpecter malware is capable of downloading, installing, and launching arbitrary iOS apps – it can also replace existing apps on your device with those it downloads. In addition, it is also capable of changing Safari’s default settings, and displaying full screen advertisements whenever you execute a normal app.

The malware, which is said to be out in the wild for the past 10 months, has already been reported to Apple, which says that “they are investigating.”

HTC terms monthly security updates as ‘unrealistic’

Nearly a couple of months after companies like Google, Samsung, and LG said they will release monthly security updates for their Android devices, HTC has said that the company can’t promise the same as it is unrealistic.

In a tweet sent out this past weekend (see above), HTC America President Jason Mackenzie said that while the Taiwanese company will try to deliver regular updates, guaranteeing an update each month is not possible.

If you aren’t already aware, the promise from Google, Samsung, and LG came in the wake of a nasty Android vulnerability dubbed Stagefright, which affected versions 2.2 and newer of the OS. Recently, a new Stagefright vulnerability has also been discovered.

While not dramatically different from the previous version, Nova Launcher 4.1 brings with it a very important new feature: Normalize icons. You can now have all the app icons the same height so you don’t have the eyesore of differently sized icons that you normally do on Android. Worth installing just for this.

Google Keep for iOS

After a long wait, Google Keep is finally on iOS. The app does exactly what it does on Android, and even looks the same (it’s not like Google ever follows iOS design guidelines). If you use Keep a lot on your Android device and wanted it on iOS, now it’s here.

Need for Speed No Limits

Need for Speed is back on mobile platform after a long hiatus since the Most Wanted. No Limits is essentially the same old arcade racer with a bit of cop chases thrown in for good measure. It’s a Need for Speed game so of course there are a lot of licensed cars to drive around and you can customize them to some degree. The game also looks quite good, however, it can be a bit too simplistic.

Shooty Skies

Possibly the most fun you are going to have in a while, at least on your phone. Shooty Skies is by the same people who made Crossy Road and it is a lot of fun. The game somewhat reminds me of Sky Force and it is essentially the same sort of gameplay where you move a plane that’s constantly shooting bullets around to knock down enemies approaching you while avoiding their bullets. The visual design is crazy, however, and it just elevates the game to a whole new level. The enemies, the weapons they fire, they boss battles, your character, your powerups, they are all a lot of fun and it’s just an extremely fast-paced and entertaining game. It’s out on iOS now and Android version is coming later.
