5.7-inch Samsung Galaxy A8 shows up in live images

The Samsung Galaxy A8 has been visiting the rumor mill for a while lately with some disconcerting info on display size. Well, a new set of live images sheds more light on the matter and reveals a cautious departure from the A-series aesthetic.

While it was initially assumed that display size will be 5.7 inches, a GFXBench listing suggested a 5.5-inch diagonal. Pictured next to what is obviously a Galaxy A7, the new handset's display is clearly larger. It would appear that the original info was correct, and it's a 5.7-inch FullHD AMOLED panel.

On the front the device is more of a scaled up Galaxy S6, than a continuation of the A-series design language. The corners are rounded with a larger radius as opposed to the minor fillet of other members of the lineup. The surrounding metal frame is here, sporting a blend of the A-series and S6 designs.

Side bezels are extremely thin, making the footprint rather acceptable despite the ample screen size. Bottom bezel is a bit bulkier, but a larger home button was needed to accommodate the fingerprint reader, and maintaining proportions it required.

The back sports the familiar speaker/camera/flash arrangement, introduced with the Galaxy S3 and featured in the whole A-series. To spice things up though, on the A8 the speaker and and flash have traded places. Otherwise the back appears the same pearl white finish as other A models.

The photos don't tell much about the specs, but we know by now that the Galaxy A8 will come with a Snapdragon 615 chipset, 2GB of RAM and 16GB of storage which, will be expandable. The primary 16MP camera will be joined by a 5MP front shooter.

The LTE-enabled smartphone will boot Android 5.1.1 upon launch. Nearly 6mm taller than the 5.7-inch Galaxy Note 3, the Galaxy A8 measures 157.7 x 76.7 x 5.9mm and packs a 3,050mAh battery in a body weighing 140g.

Doogee S6000 RAM reportedly doubled, price remains same

Chinese smartphone manufacturer Doogee has decided to increase the RAM on its S6000 smartphone to 2GB, according to a report out of China. The handset was earlier said to come with 1GB RAM.

The report also notes that the move will have no affect on the price of the device, which means that it will continue carrying the same $140 tag as promised earlier. The phone is expected to launch in August this year.

For those who aren't aware, the USP of the S6000 is its battery – it packs in a whopping 6000mah battery that is promised to last for around 3-4 days of average use. Other specs of the device include, Mediatek MT6735 64-bit SoC with an octa-core CPU clocked at 1.5GHz, 5.5-inch 720p display, 16GB expandable internal memory, and 8MP rear and 5MP front shooter.

Panasonic Lumix CM1 goes on pre-order in US

The Panasonic Lumix CM1 smartphone/camera hybrid, which was announced back in September last year and shown off at this year's Consumer Electronics Show (CES), is now up for pre-order in the US.

As for the price, the device – which has been available in Europe for a while now – carries a tag of $1,000 (unlocked version) in the United States.

Specs-wise, the Lumix CM1 is powered by a Snapdragon 801 chipset with quad-core 2.3 GHz Krait 400 CPU and Adreno 330 GPU. It comes with 2GB RAM and 16GB expandable internal memory, and packs in a 2600 mAh battery.

First firmware update for Xperia Z3+ and Z4 Tablet gets certified

The first firmware update for the Sony Xperia Z3+ and Z4 Tablet has been certified by the PTCRB. It carries a build number of 28.0.A.7.24.

It is, however, not yet known whether the update is aimed at fixing the overheating issues related to the problematic Snapdragon 810 chipset which is powering the devices.

Xiaomi to announce a new Note device on June 29

Xiaomi will announce a new Note device on June 29, according to the company's CEO Lei Jun, who revealed the information on Chinese micro-blogging site Weibo. He, however, didn't share any other details.

Given that the next iterations of both the Xiaomi Mi Note and Xiaomi Mi Note Pro – which were announced back in January this year – are expected to be powered by the yet-to-be released Snapdragon 820 chipset, it'd be safe to say that the new device won't be any of them.

It's highly possible that Xiaomi would announce the Redmi Note 2, which was allegedly spotted at TENAA's (China's FCC) website recently. As per the leak, the device will be powered by a 64-bit MediaTek MTK6795 chipset, and sport a 5.5-inch screen featuring a 1080 x 1920 resolution. LG G3 may skip Android 5.1, jump straight to Android M

Now that the Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 edge have become the first devices with software updates not directly handled by Google to get Android 5.1.1 Lollipop, you may be wondering when this version of the OS will land on other phones.

For example, the LG G3. The G4, this year's flagship, launched running Android 5.1, but its predecessor is still on 5.0. Unfortunately though, things may not change for a while.

According to the official Facebook account of LG's arm in Greece, the company currently has no plans to update the G3 to Android 5.1 Lollipop.

No additional details have been provided, but it may just be that LG is planning a jump straight to Android M for the G3. Yet if that's so, it means last year's flagship probably won't be getting a big software update until next year. This situation could render G3 owners quite impatient.

Hopefully this was nothing but a miscommunication from the people handling that Facebook page for LG. Otherwise, its customers probably won't be too happy.
