Apple may tap JDI for OLED displays for iPhones starting in 2018

Apple may be interested in switching its iPhone line from LCD to OLED, but it’s going to require a massive supply, which few companies can produce. Samsung is the biggest player currently, but the two companies have a tumultuous relationship.

According to a Japanese publication, Japan Display Inc. will start research into OLED panels and go from Gen 4.5 to Gen 6 over the next couple of years. This puts the 2018 generation of iPhone as the earliest possible launch target. The development will happen at the Mobara plant.

Apple currently sources its LCDs from JDI and Sharp, but LG Display has also been rumored to make a massive investment in developing an OLED manufacturing capacity for iPhones. Apple’s currently only OLED-packing product, the Watch, gets its displays from Samsung.

Apple Smart Battery Case for iPhone 6 and 6s extends your battery life, looks iffy

While the iPhone enjoys a rich accessory ecosystem, most of it is third-party stuff. So it’s unusual to see an Apple-designed battery case for the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6s, but it’s even more unusual to see a design like this.

The microfiber interior will protect your precious gadget from scratches and the elastomer hinge on top is pretty clever. A silicone exterior brings back memories of the iPhone 5c though.

The hunchback design may also be hard to swallow and it only comes in Black and White, no Gold or Rose Gold to be had here. It doesn’t add much battery capacity either – Apple is mum on actual capacity, but the case comes just short of doubling battery life. Considering the iPhone 6s itself has 1,715mAh, the capacity of the case can’t be much.

The iPhone 6/6S Smart Battery Case boosts the official talk time to 25 hours, Internet use on LTE to 18 hours and adds plenty of video and music playback time. An advantage over third-party designs is that you get to see the status of the Battery Case in your notification center.

It comes as no surprise that the Smart Battery Case is noticeably pricier than its third-party alternatives – $100 in the US and €120 in Europe. The Case supports your usual Lightning cables and Apple’s iPhone dock.

Mysterious Lumia spotted in live photos, could it be the Lumia 850?

The Microsoft Lumia 850 made its debut in the rumor mill in July. It was featured in an extensive specs leak and was said to be part of the OEM’s upcoming line of mid-rangers, also including a Lumia 750 and Lumia 550. Since then, the 850 was allegedly scrapped, but now that the 550 is a reality, it seems more likely that the rest of the trio will follow.

A new Microsoft handset was spotted in a fresh set of live photos and it does appear to be the Lumia 850. Similarities with a recent render, courtesy of leakster @OnLeaks seem to be abundant (camera, LED, speaker grill positions), so, we have a lot of reason to believe that this is in fact the Lumia 850, codenamed Honjo. The photos are of poor quality, but the metal frame looks to be present, so does the single LED flash on the back and what could perhaps also be a second one on the front.

Interestingly enough, one of the photos also comes overlaid with some specs, which don’t match the initial leak. The new info hints at a much larger 5.7″ device with 1080p resolution and a Snapdragon 615 SoC, as opposed to a 5.0″ 768p one and a Snapdragon 410d. We can’t really say which specs are more trustworthy at this point, but both are quite believable and it is definitely not out of the question that all three mid-rangers were rethought hardware-wise since first being spotted back in July. That definitely seems to be the case with the Lumia 550.

Sony releases a messenger app for PlayStation users

Sony has released a messaging app for iOS and Android, called PlayStation Messages. The app is a simple way to keep in touch with your PlayStation Network friends.

Previously, if you had to chat with your PS friends, you’d either have to do it through the console or if you’re not on your console, then from the clumsy PlayStation App, which is designed to do a lot of things. The PlayStation Messages app takes out just the messaging component from that app and turns it into a dedicated app for when you just want to chat with your friends.

As before, you can have one on one chats or group chats. You can also send stickers. The app shows which of your friends are online and what device they are messaging from.

You can download the app from the links below.

Analyst says Xiaomi Mi 5 won’t feature Qualcomm’s next-gen ultrasonic fingerprint tech

We already know that Xiaomi’s upcoming Mi 5 flagship smartphone is said to powered by a Snapdragon 820 chipset. Now, as the SoC includes support for Qualcomm’s next-gen fingerprint scanning technology (called Snapdragon Sense ID), it was naturally expected that the handset would feature a fingerprint scanner based on that tech. However, looks like this won’t be the case.

According to well-known Chinese analyst Pan Jiutang, the technology isn’t at a stage yet where it can be considered reliable enough to be used in a flagship smartphone. He says that the Mi 5 would instead come with a traditional fingerprint sensor on the front.

It’s worth mentioning that Oppo’s upcoming flagship Find 9 is also rumored to feature a fingerprint sensor based on the technology.

For those who aren’t in the know, the new tech relies on ultrasonic 3D scanning, which even works with dirty or wet fingers and is comparatively more secure. It also works through all kind of surfaces such as glass, sapphire, metal, aluminum and plastic. You can read more about it…
