HTC’s monthly revenue hits six-month high in November

Struggling smartphone manufacturer HTC saw its monthly revenue jump to a six-month high in the month of November. The figure stood at NTD 10.29 billion ($314.32 million) last month, up 15% compared to October.

There’s no doubt that the Taiwanese company’s latest smartphone – the One A9 – played an important role in this, helping the company ramp up its sales. The device was launched in the US early last month, and also went on sale in the UK a few days later. Sales are expected to increase further this month due to holiday season and as well as the release of the handset in more markets.

However, despite this silver lining, HTC’s struggle is far from over – the company’s November revenues were still down 40% compared to last…

Dropbox announces plans to shut down Mailbox and Carousel next year

While it started out as a service focused on storing and syncing files, Dropbox has branched out into many other directions in the past few years. However, some of those non-core experiments are coming to an end soon.

The company has unveiled plans to shut down two of its mobile apps, namely Mailbox and Carousel. The former is an email client that went live on iOS in 2013, a month after which Dropbox acquired it. One year later, an Android version was released, along with Carousel, an app dedicated to viewing all the photos you have in your Dropbox account right next to the ones on your phone. It also uploaded all the shots you took on your handset to Dropbox.

However, Dropbox found that most people still viewed images inside its main app, which can also handle automatic in-the-background image uploads by itself. So it doesn’t make a lot of sense for Carousel to exist as a standalone offering, which is why it will be shut down on March 31, 2016. Oh, and certain “key features” from Carousel will make it to the main Dropbox app in the future, apparently.

Mailbox will cease to operate on February 26. There’s a FAQ already up that deals with making the transition to a new email client as easy as it can be.

Google Calendar for Android and iOS gains reminder support

The iOS and Android mobile apps for Google Calendar are both getting a new feature this week. When new versions of the app hit the iTunes App Store and the Google Play Store, respectively, Calendar will have support for reminders. These will reportedly come to the Web version of Google Calendar too, at some point in the future.

Reminders help you keep track of your to-dos alongside your scheduled events (which have lived in Calendar so far). While events are tied to certain dates and times, reminders “stick with you over time so you can track them until they are actually done”, Google says. If a reminder isn’t completed, it will show up at the top of your calendar the next day – and the next after that, and so on. So you clearly won’t be able to miss anything on your to-do list from now on.

When you are finally done with a reminder, you just swipe it away to the side and it’s gone. Reminders are more useful than events because for them Google Calendar automatically adds stuff such as phone numbers and addresses. So a reminder telling you to call someone or run an errand will display the phone number or address within easy reach. Calendar uses information from your contacts along with Google’s knowledge graph to power this feature.

Reminders can be created from Inbox, Keep, and Google Now too. And they will all show up in Calendar…

Google Safe Browsing arrives on Chrome for Android

For years, Google’s Safe Browsing feature has protected over a billion desktop users of the company’s Chrome browser from malware, unwanted software, as well as social engineering sites. And now this useful service is making its debut on Android, the search giant has announced.

The Safe Browsing client for Android is part of Google Play Services starting with version 8.1. And as Google Play Services is baked into every Android device out there, you probably already have Safe Browsing on your phone or tablet. All you need to actually use it is Chrome for Android, version 46 or later. You can verify that Safe Browsing is enabled by going to Settings > Privacy inside Chrome.

When Chrome encounters a dangerous site, it will display a warning such as the one you see in the screenshot to the left. When you get the big red screen, you can opt into automatically reporting details of possible security incidents to Google.

The team designing this feature has ensured that memory and processor use as well as network traffic are all at a minimum.

The Play Store has already had protection against potentially harmful apps in place, but of course many problems can arise from the websites you visit. Hence why the Safe Browsing tool has made it to…

Verizon CFO: We would consider acquiring Yahoo if deal makes sense

Just a week after there were reports that the Yahoo board is considering selling the company’s Internet business, Verizon has said that they would consider acquiring the unit if the deal makes sense. The comment was made by Verizon’s CFO Fran Shammo while speaking at an investor conference in New York today.

“It’s just like with AOL, I mean we look at everything across this spectrum,” he said. “And if we see there is a strategic fit and it makes sense for our shareholders and we can return value, I mean we’ll look at it, but at this point it’s way too premature to talk about that one.” For those who aren’t already aware, Verizon announced a $4.4 billion acquisition of AOL back in May this year. The deal completed in June.

Reports also had it that aside from selling off the company’s core business, Yahoo’s board could even decide to spin off the company’s investment in Alibaba, which is currently worth over $30…

Twitter now shows bigger photos on its website

People like looking at photos. And specifically, people seem to like staring at photos posted onto Twitter. So the company behind the 140-character service has decided to make the experience of using its website for the purpose of checking out pictures a lot more enticing than it was before.

And this has happened through a simple (if well overdue) change: the photos are now bigger. That’s it. The size of the images in your stream has been enhanced, which means you’ll probably resort to clicking a picture in order to see a bigger version of it a lot less in the future.

The same treatment has thankfully been applied to multi-photo displays, as evidenced by the screenshot below.

The new multi-photo viewer emphasizes each image more than before, while also actually having grown bigger in size. Twitter says these changes will make your timeline “more…

HTC One A9 to get Android 6.0.1 this month, M9 on track for 6.0

Just a few short hours ago Google unveiled the latest version of Android, 6.0.1 (also called Marshmallow like 6.0). As we already told you, this iteration of the OS brings with it support for dozens of new emojis, as well as a couple of tweaked features – newly positioned navigation buttons for tablets and a change in the Do Not Disturb functionality.

Now we already have the first Android device manufacturer issuing a rough timeline for when Android 6.0.1 will make it to one of its handsets. The company in question is HTC, and the handset we’re talking about is the One A9 (pictured below).

Through the voice of Mo Versi, its VP of Product Management, the Taiwanese company has announced that the One A9 is going to be blessed with Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow before the end of this month. This is not that surprising considering HTC’s promise that the A9 would receive every Android update within 15 days of Nexus devices getting it (the caveat being that this is true only for phones bought unlocked in the US).

Along with the news regarding the One A9, Versi also reassured HTC customers that unlocked One M9 smartphones purchased in the US are going to see Android 6.0 Marshmallow before the end of the year. This comes after the One (M8) from 2014 has already started receiving that…
