Apple Watch 2 trial production rumored to start this month

The second generation Apple Watch has so far been rumored to become official at an event in March, during which the oft-leaked 4-inch iPhone 5e (or 6c, or 7c) should also be unveiled.

Now a new rumor out of China claims that trial production for the Apple Watch 2 will be started by the end of January. This seems to align, timeline-wise, with a March announcement (and perhaps an April release) for the wearable. Taiwan’s Quanta Computer is said to be the company taking care of manufacturing for Apple’s second smartwatch. In fact, Quanta has already confirmed that it’s working on the device.

The new Apple Watch could come sporting a FaceTime camera, as well as new and improved sensors all-round. The new wearable has also been rumored to be thinner than its predecessor, while keeping its square display.

Pushbullet now lets you send MMS messages from your computer

Pushbullet is the service that will, for example, mirror the notifications that you get on your phone to your computer. It also lets you send text messages from your computer (because it links your phone with it), and now it’s received yet another new feature.

From this point on, not only can you send texts, but also MMS messages from your computer. So yes, you can now attach pictures to messages, and these will be sent along as MMS messages. Do note however that your phone needs to run Android 5.0 Lollipop or newer for the MMS feature to work.

Like everything Pushbullet does, this works because your computer (where you use the Pushbullet app or browser extension) is ‘linked’ to your phone – so that MMS is first sent to your handset, which then sends it further to your contacts. All of this is done seamlessly, of course.

The latest version of Pushbullet also increases the reliability of the texting feature, which should result in a better experience. To use these enhancements you need to have the latest version of Pushbullet for Android, naturally, but also the newest iteration of its Chrome extension or Windows desktop app.

Microsoft Lumia 640 starts receiving Windows 10 update in Europe

After many months of waiting, it’s apparently now time for Microsoft to finally roll out updates to Windows 10 Mobile for its smartphones. And the first model to get such an update is the 4G-capable Lumia 640.

Such units purchased from T-Mobile in Poland are going to be graced with the finalized version of Windows 10 Mobile in the next few days. The rollout has started already, but as it’s an over-the-air affair it’s staged, so it could be a while before all of T-Mobile Poland’s Lumia 640s get it.

The build going out is 02177.00000.15184.36002. We assume more carriers from more countries will launch the update soon, and hopefully Microsoft will then start the rollouts for its other Lumia models.

So far if you wanted to get a taste of Windows 10 Mobile you had to use the Insider program to get beta-type releases. This time, the real deal is said to be going out to devices that are not enrolled in that scheme.

Unlocked LG G4 is just $349.95, today only

Here’s a good deal for the LG G4, the Korean company’s flagship for 2015 – but you need to act fast. Today only, you can buy the handset for just $349.95 at B&H.

That’s $349.95 in unlocked form, not tied to a carrier contract, and you should be able to use it on AT&T on T-Mobile without worry (or one of the MVNOs operating on their networks). This is quite the deal given that the G4 was LG’s competitor for the Samsung Galaxy S6 last year.

But you do need to hurry if you’re interested. At the moment the deal is only valid for around ten more…

The Nubia Z11 might be a no-show at ZTE’s January 18 event

As you might have heard, Chinese OEM ZTE is gearing up for an announcement event on January 18. This official info just happened to coincide with a set of fresh new leaks, concerning two upcoming devices – the Nubia Z11 and Nubia X8, so we just put two and two and naturally assumed that the pair would be the star attraction at the show.

A new company teaser, however, suggests otherwise. It pertains to the same January 18 event and features no mention of either the Z11 or the X8. Instead, it talks of yet another new device, dubbed the Nubia My Prague S. We haven’t really heard of said model up until now. But the title alone suggests it is a successor to the ZTE Nubia My Prague, released back in August 2015.

We can only assume that the “S” model will follow in its footsteps and offer a combination of style and mid-range performance. The original My Prague has a 5.2-inch FullHD AMOLED display and is equipped with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 615. The camera setup consists of a 13MP main shooter and an 8MP selfie one. It is offered in either a 2GB RAM + 16GB storage option or a 3GB plus 32GB one, respectively. Also, it was marketed as the OEM’s thinnest smartphone, with a 5.5 mm profile.

In the absence of other information on the Nubia My Prague S, it seems we just have to wait for the announcement to see how well ZTE has managed with the successor.

Microsoft Lumia 950 XL back on sale in USA and Canada

Many express doubt about the success of the Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL, yet those two seemed to have a successful holiday season. The XL edition sold so well, it went out of stock in North America shortly after its release. Probably the free extras like the Microsoft Dock given by some retailers helped, too.

So, if you live in USA or Canada and you haven’t managed to get a Lumia 950 XL, we have some good news. Microsoft has renewed its listings on the official USA and Canadian web stores and you can order the Lumia 950 XL right now.

The phone is still listed as a coming soon, but quite unintuitively once you reach the checkout page, you’ll see it will ship in a day or two.

If you order the Lumia 950 XL through the Canadian Microsoft store, you will also receive a CAD $50 discount on the Microsoft Display Dock. The USA fans on the other hands are eligible for a completely free Dock, so there is that.

Indeed, Microsoft seems to have caught up with the Lumia 950 XL demand in North America. Are you planning of getting one for yourself? You can learn more about the Lumia 950 XL in our in-depth review.

Xiaomi Mi 5 shows up on retailer’s website, complete with specs

The Xiaomi Mi 5 will be unveiled on January 21, but GearBest already put up a page for it. The page has been taken down now, at least it listed all the juicy specs.

The Mi 5 is clearly aimed at the upcoming Galaxy S7. It will have a 5.2″ QHD screen (565ppi) and run MIUI 7 (based on Android 5.1) on a Snapdragon 820 chipset with 4GB of RAM. The storage on this one was 16GB, though a 64GB option is very likely.

The phone will pack a 16MP camera on the back with dual-LED flash and an 8MP selfie camera. The battery is surprisingly big at 3,600mAh. For connectivity there are two SIMs and LTE.

These specs of the Xiaomi Mi 5 are in line with what we’ve seen from leaks, which may actually be the source of GearBest’s info. There was nothing about the price or a second version…

New Lenovo passes through TENAA, might be the K5 Note

Lenovo really seems to be working hard at expanding its product lineup, with new offers such as the metal Lemon 3, which just launched and the Lenovo K4 Note, which is even already available. Now, it seems, the OEM is hard at work on a successor to the latter and understandably so, given the success of the series so far.

A possible candidate for the next-in-line spot, presumably the Lenovo K5 Note, was just spotted at TENAA, bearing the model number “K52t38”. However, there is one major problem with the unit that is hard to ignore – it looks remarkably similar to some recent Xiaomi and Meizu models. If we take the Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 for instance, the resemblance is obvious – the camera size, as well as position, along with the LED flash, round fingerprint reader and speaker grill. Even the curve and the relatively clean front look almost identical.

TENAA also revealed a few details about the device’s specs sheet. It is equipped with a 5.5-inch FullHD IPS display and runs on an undisclosed octa-core chip, clocked at 1.8 Ghz. Its body measures 152 x 75.7 x 8.49 mm.

RAM is set at 2GB and storage at 16GB, there might also be a 32GB option, with a RAM upgrade to 4GB. The main camera is listed as a 13MP model, along with an 8MP shooter on the front. The phone is LTE-enabled, as one would expect and is powered by a 3500 mAh battery.

Samsung Galaxy A (2016) series gets 11 exclusive TouchWiz themes

Samsung launched 11 exclusive TouchWiz themes for the Galaxy A (2016) phones. This means if you own a Galaxy A3 (2016), Galaxy A5 (2016), Galaxy A7 (2016), or Galaxy A9 (2016) – there are quite a few new original themes waiting for you.

It’s been about a year since Samsung added theme support on its proprietary TouchWiz launcher, and most of the new Galaxies are coming with a few preinstalled themes. But it seems the manufacturer wants to increase the interest to the theme support, particularly on the refreshed Galaxy A smartphones.

The 11 new TouchWiz themes are available for download in the store on all compatible Galaxy A phones. If you own one of these handsets, you may want to check it for yourself.

The new themes are stylish, but similar, and rely on different colors instead of completely different visual elements. Check them…

LG G5 said to feature a modular design for sliding out its battery

With LG already sending out invites for its February 21 event in Barcelona, eager fans are already discussing the possibility of a new flagship phone – the LG G5, which has naturally given a new spark to rumors about the device, as well.

The latest report out of Korea hints at the possibility of a “modular” design for the LG G5. But, before you start thinking about Google’s Project ARA and get overly excited about the possibility of upgrading your future smartphone, we should tell you that it is more of an innovative solution for a thinner design, while still preserving the removable battery.

The latter feature has apparently remained a priority for LG throughout the years and a lot of fans do still value the convenience of easy access to the phone’s battery – an increasingly hard to find feature in the mobile realm. This, however, undoubtedly introduces some extra girth to a device and in its strive to produce an even thinner device this year, LG has allegedly come up with this new solution. It involves a detachable bottom piece on the phone, which will reveal the battery and allow it to simply slide in and out.

This, of course, would involve some of the hardware to be mounted on detachable connectors as well, like the speaker, USB port, microphone and perhaps a few other things as well, but that shouldn’t really be a problem. An alleged eyewitness testimony also suggests that in an effort to slim down the profile even further, LG has decided to move its volume and power controls away from the back and to the side rim once again. All that the LG G5 will allegedly have on the back is a camera and a fingerprint reader.

As for the hardware of the device, we still haven’t heard a lot, but a 5.3-inch QHD display has been suggested, along with a secondary ticker display, like the one on the LG V10. The new Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 should be powering the phone and the aforementioned rear camera setup will allegedly consist of two modules with a resolution of 16MP (although we can’t say if that number applies to both shooters).
