Apple’s iPad sales expected to drop to a record low in Q1 2016

The tech business is a harsh environment to survive it and even major players, such as Apple, often go through rough patches in terms of sales. A new report by Digitimes Research, suggests that Cupertino’s line of tablets, the iPad family, is heading toward a huge sales decline in the first three months of 2016.

Apparently, market trends now indicate that the next quarterly shipment number will be 9.8 million – the lowest since the Q2 of 2011. That would be a whopping 39.1% decrease over Q4 2015 and a 20% decrease year-on-year.

The declining tablet sales are also not limited to Cupertino. On a market-wide scale, Digitimes Research estimates that 46.65 million tablets will be shipped in the first quarter of 2016. That would constitute a 28.6% decline from last quarter and an 8.6% year-on-year slowdown.

This means Apple is still expected to lead the flock with 21% of global tablet shipments, followed by Samsung with 14% and Lenovo with 7.2%. After that, there are: Amazon 5.8%, Huawei Device 4%, Asustek Computer 2.7%, Microsoft and TCL each with 2.6%, LG Electronics 1.8% and Acer 1.2%.

Another interesting statistic concerns preferred display sizes and it appear the 7-inch form factor is still the most popular and thus expected to account for 35.4% of tablet shipments. The list goes on as follows: 7.9-inch 13.8%, 8.x-inch 6.1%, 9.x-inch 23.8%, 10.x-inch 10.1% and 11-inch and above…

Samsung’s ‘Seven Days of Unboxing’ Galaxy S7 promo gets off to a very weird start

In case you haven’t heard, Samsung is launching a new phone soon. The Galaxy S7, as it will be known, is coming at MWC later this week. And Samsung has started the hype machine with a series of weird unboxing videos.

Samsung is calling it ‘Seven Days of Unboxing’. There is no actual unboxing in any of these. Just a bunch of people (and a llama) who supposedly unbox it off camera, and then it gets even weirder.

It’s wholly pointless but if that somehow piqued your interest then you can catch it all in the link…

Xiaomi Mi 5 specs leaked: 5.15″ FullHD screen, Snapdragon 820

The Xiaomi Mi 5 is expected to arrive on February 24, and reports on its specs have so far have been abundant. Rumors of two body types have been floating around with little intel to confirm if we’ll see different diagonals or Xiaomi will take the Galaxy S6/S6 edge route (both at 5.1 inches).

What we do have confirmation on now, seemingly, is at least some of the specs of one of the versions. The data checks out with previous rumors – for the most part, that is. A single shot, possibly of a retail package sticker, mentions a Snapdragon 820 chipset, and 16MP/4MP camera combo. Display size is quoted at 5.15″ (which does round up to the agreed-upon 5.2″), but resolution is said to be FullHD, while QHD was considered more likely until now.

Xiaomi Mi 5 alleged specs (click for full size)

Battery capacity is listed at 3,000mAh, which is smaller than the rumored 3,600mAh, but the large number may be reserved for the potential Mi 5 Plus model, if there is one indeed. USB Type-C will be Xiaomi’s choice for wired connectivity, the sticker says, and goes on to list the supported cellular bands.

Xiaomi has been playing the teasing game too, with both president and global VP posting camera samples online. Meanwhile, word also got out on the pricing on all four combinations on body type and…

Sony’s PlayStation VR launching this fall, GameStop CEO says

While Sony is still tight-lipped on PlayStation VR’s launch time-frame, we now at-least have some idea on when the headset could arrive. This is all thanks to GameStop CEO Paul Raines, who said in a recent interview that they “will launch the Sony product this fall.”

Keep in mind, however, that the actual launch could happen earlier than the ‘fall’ time frame revealed by Raines given that it isn’t yet known whether or not the retailer will start selling the headset immediately at launch.

As for the price, there was no word on it from Raines. But we do have some idea on the headset’s pricing – last month, it was spotted listed on three different Swiss online retailers, carrying price tags in the range of CHF 499 – CHF 552.45, or $505 – $560 at current exchange rates.

Coming back to Raines, aside from revealing the launch time frame for PlayStation VR, he also said that the company is “in discussions” on carrying Oculus Rift and HTC Vive headsets,…

Instagram has confirmed that it has started rolling out the the two-factor authentication feature. The confirmation came after users of the mobile photo-sharing service reportedly spotted the feature in testing.

Sony UK: Xperia Z5 series, Z4 Tablet, and Z3+ to get Marshmallow update starting March 7

Sony has announced that the Android 6.0 update will start hitting Xperia Z4 Tablet and Xperia Z3+ units as well as Xperia Z5 series devices in the United Kingdom beginning March 7. The announcement was made by the UK subsidiary of the Japanese company on Twitter.

@FalseNugget it’s set to roll out from March 7th for Xperia Z5 series, Z4 Tablet and Z3+ – we will share confirmed timings when its ready— Sony Xperia GB (@sonyxperiagb) February 15, 2016

What’s worth mentioning here is that the tweet makes it clear that the date is not set in stone at this point in time. Also, given the fact that such updates from Sony have been off the mark in the past, at best we can say that the roll-out is ‘likely’ to begin at the said date.

For those who aren’t already aware, the Android 6.0 Marshmallow update has already started rolling out to Sony Xperia Z5 (and possibly its Compact and Premium variants, too) in Turkey.
