Existing Lumia phones will start getting Windows 10 in December

While we already know that the newly-announced, Windows 10 Mobile-powered Lumia 950 flagship duo will be available next month, it has now been revealed that existing Lumia owners will start receiving the Windows 10 Mobile update in December.

The information was revealed by Microsoft in a comment (see image above) on its official Lumia Facebook page while responding to a query related to Windows 10 Mobile update for the Lumia 640 and Lumia 640XL.

“It is our ambition to make an upgrade available for majority of Lumia smartphones running Windows Phone 8.1,” the software giant said in a separate comment, adding that 8GB of internal storage will be required for the update, meaning devices like the Lumia 530 will be out of…

iMacs with 4K displays reportedly coming next week

According to a report from 9To5Mac, Apple is planning to update its iMac line with the launch of a new 21.5-inch model sporting 4K display. While the new iMac will be available for purchase starting October 13, it won’t be available in large quantities until next month.

As per the report, the new 4K model will sport a 4096 x 2304 screen as well as a considerably faster graphics card. It is also expected to come preloaded with OS X El Capitan, and be costlier.

However, from the outside, it would be difficult to differentiate the current iMac from the new model as there won’t be any change in physical looks. The report also notes that the iPad Pro will be launched early next…

Google responds to concerns over Android Auto’s data collection

In the wake of an article on auto news website Motor Trend that raised concerns over the amount of data Google’s Android Auto software collects, Google has issued a formal statement clearing the air on the matter.

“We take privacy very seriously and do not collect the data the Motor Trend article claims such as throttle position, oil temp, and coolant temp,” said the Mountain View, California-based company.

“Users opt in to share information with Android Auto that improves their experience, so the system can be hands-free when in drive and provide more accurate navigation through the car’s GPS.”

The article claimed that the search giant requires a car manufacturer to pass on all this information whenever someone activates Android Auto, something that has led to Porsche ditching the Google’s offering in favour of Apple’s CarPlay for its 911 Carrera and 911 Carrerra S. The auto maker says Apple only wants to know if the car is moving while its infotainment system is in use.

Microsoft Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL will be exclusive to AT&T in the US

Microsoft has wrapped up its big event only a few hours ago, unveiling the Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL. These two smartphones will be the flagship Windows 10 Mobile offerings for the foreseeable future, which is why quite a few people may want to purchase them when they become available next month.

However, if you’re in the US you’ll be out of luck unless your carrier of choice happens to be AT&T (or you don’t mind switching). That’s because the Lumia 950 duo will be exclusive to this particular carrier.

Microsoft (and Nokia before it) has gone the exclusive carrier deal route before, but none of its competitors are still doing this for their top of the line devices. Yet the software giant considers this to be “the best distribution for this family of devices”, according to Tuula Rytila, corporate vice president of marketing for phones and new devices. Microsoft apparently thinks it will get a better marketing push for the handsets from AT&T if it’s the only carrier selling them.

The bad news thankfully doesn’t extend to Europe, where the Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL are reportedly going to be widely…

Android Lollipop is now installed on 23.5% of devices

Last month, Lollipop finally crossed the 20% mark in Google’s Android distribution chart. That means that as of the beginning of September, 21% of all active Android devices ran one of the two versions called Lollipop.

One month later, Android 5.x keeps climbing, though it’s not a fast ascension, that’s for sure. In the just published chart for the beginning of October, Google reveals that 23.5% of all active Android devices now run Lollipop.

KitKat is down slightly, to 38.9% from 39.2% last month. The three iterations of Jelly Bean combined now have 30.2% market share, down from 31.8%. Ice Cream Sandwich falls to 3.4% from 3.7%, and Gingerbread goes to 3.8% from 4.1%. Oddly enough, Froyo is still stuck at 0.2% of installs, just as it was in September.

Older versions aren’t part of this report because it’s generated using data gathered from the new Play Store app, which only works on Android 2.2 Froyo or later. Next month we should see Android 6.0 Marshmallow in the chart for the first time, now that the new version is making its way to Nexus and Android One…

Android One devices are now getting Android 6.0 Marshmallow updates

The slow over-the-air rollout of Android 6.0 Marshmallow updates to the Nexus line started yesterday. But there’s another line of phones that Google’s in charge of updating to the latest versions of its OS, and that is Android One. The company hasn’t officially announced anything about when or if these would be making the jump to Marshmallow.

That said, the rollout has already started, at least for first-generation Android One handsets such as the Micromax Canvas A1, Karbonn Sparkle V, and Spice Dream Uno. Update notifications are now spotted across India, so if you haven’t received yours, just a little bit of patience is necessary.

We assume the other Android One devices will be next in line for the Marshmallow update, but don’t forget that Google’s rollouts can be frustratingly slow. The good news is that the ball’s rolling, as they say. The update for the first Android One phones is around 330MB in size, as you can see from the screenshot…
