El cifrado end-to-end de WhatsApp ya está apareciendo para todos los usuarios

Hace unas semanas estuvimos comentando que finalmente WhatsApp abrazaría el cifrado end-to-end para estar a la misma altura que las demás apps de mensajería existentes en la Google Play Store. No es que de repente ahora innove WhatsApp con esta encriptación de los mensajes, sino que está a la par que otras con una característica básica para una app de mensajería que permite a los usuarios ponerse en contacto, por lo que la privacidad es simplemente vital.

Así que finalmente WhatsApp ha incorporado el mismo código para el encriptado que el usado para Signal, la app conocida anteriormente como TextSecure y que es avalada por el propio Edward Snowden. Desde el mes pasado estuvo probando hasta el día de hoy cuando el cifrado extremo a extremo o end-to-end ya es una realidad para los usuarios de WhatsApp. Aparece un mensaje que avisa de que las llamadas y mensajes enviados al chat ahora están seguros con cifrado extremo a extremo.

Pero ¿qué significa?

Con la encriptación end-to-end, WhatsApp consigue que solamente tu y las personas con las que te comunicas a través de esta app puedan leer los mensajes. Nadie, incluso WhatsApp, puede acceder a ellos. Cada mensaje que se envíe está protegido al estar cifrado con un bloqueo, solamente el emisor y el receptor son los que tienen la clave para poder desbloquearlo. WhatsApp clama que borra los mensajes de sus servidores después de que han sido enviados al receptor.

Esta medida llega al año de que la Electronic Frontier Foundation criticara abiertamente a WhatsApp en como gestiona los datos de los usuarios comparado a otras apps de mensajería.

Los mensajes que avisan al usuario de que sus mensajes están siendo cifrados están apareciendo a muchos usuarios en todo el mundo. El mensaje aparece en las mismas conversaciones y es este: “Las llamadas y mensajes enviados a este chat ahora están seguros con cifrado de extremo a extremo. Toca para más información”.

Esta característica está disponible desde el servidor, por lo que no se necesita actualizar nada. Simplemente aparece el mensaje, aunque sí que se puede comprobar si la conversación en la que estamos está siendo encriptada.

Cómo saber si la conversación está siendo cifrada

Para saber si la conversación actual está siendo cifrada, simplemente pulsamos sobre el nombre del usuario y luego sobre cifrado. Si vemos que aparece la opción de cifrado es que la encriptación ya está activa.

La otra opción que tenemos es ir a Ajustes> Cuenta> Seguridad. Aquí también aparece el mensaje de que las conversaciones están siendo cifradas y una opción para mostrar las notificaciones de seguridad. Este vale para que cuando el código de seguridad de un contacto haya cambiado seamos notificados por ello.

Desde la opción de cifrado al pulsar sobre el nombre del contacto, también tenemos la opción de usar un código QR para comprobar manualmente el encriptado. Otra medida para asegurarnos de que la conversación está siendo cifrada.

Una medida para ofrecer mayor sensación de seguridad y privacidad a los millones de usuarios que utilizan WhatsApp diariamente y que con ello es una más de este tipo de apps que abogan por la seguridad. Signal ha sido una de las apps más llamativas por como pone el objetivo por la seguridad y privacidad de los mensajes que se envían los usuarios. Telegram también ha tenido sus opciones como los chat secretos en los que se protege aún más este derecho básico para las personas, ya que por esos mensajes suele pasar información sensible que ha de estar protegida debidamente.

Una de sus cualidades es que haya relegado en la tecnología de cifrado de Signal (anteriormente TextSecure) para incluso ofrecer mayor confianza para que se sepa que se lo han tomado seriamente, después justo de todo lo acontecido entre Apple y el FBI, cuando este último quería acceder a los mensajes de un teléfono, a lo que los de Cupertino respondieron con una negación.

A Rather Amazing Thing Happened Today…

To start this story, I'll have to bring us back about a year.

At the time, I was playing minecraft on my laptop, a rather weak device, but of course, it could handle minecraft just fine. I had started my first server, and all was well.

Things were going great, i got a good spawn, and had fine home for myself. A few weeks later, I found a saddle and gold horse armor while collecting sand, and I knew it was time to get myself a strong equine companion. Out adventuring I went, and sure enough, I got myself a fine horse.

The way back didn't go so well. You see the laptop could handle Minecraft fine, but on horseback at full speed? Quite the lag fest was in store for me. Such a lag fest, that just with my house in far sight, I didn't see the massive crevice that I ran straight into. Down went the horse and me, and there went all my stuff, and my brand new horse.

Fast forward about a year to today. My friend and I are building happily, the horse long forgotten. What does my friend see at the bottom of a nearby crevice? A fine horse wearing a set of gold armor. He survived the fall. We went down through a waterfall, built a stairs out, and off I rode to the stable which I had made all those moons ago.

Personally I found it amazing that the horse not only survived, but managed not to despawn after all this time. He was down there in the crevice about 50 or so blocks deep, just chilling I guess. I reckon I'll call him Joey, named for the horse in the War Horse who also managed to find his original owner after some tough times.
