Canonical tries bringing the full PC Ubuntu experience in a tablet

Remember the Ubuntu Edge? It was Canonical’s quite ambitious endeavor to bring a full desktop-grade Ubuntu experience in a dockable mobile phone. It all started and sadly failed in crowdfunding all the way back in 2013, way before Microsoft was even close to its strikingly similar Windows 10 Continuum experience.

Now, well over two years later, the project appears to be still alive and kicking and more relevant than ever, as evident by Canonical’s announcement of a brand new tablet that offers the PC dock experience.

The concept is relatively simple – make a mobile OS that utilizes the same core as its desktop counterpart, or at least a subset of it, like Window’s Universal apps or a common Linux kernel with specialized scalable UI elements, as provided by Ubuntu. Then you can simply run the same apps across all your devices just with slightly different interfaces – no need for porting and costly additional development.

The newly announced Canonical tablet is a modification of the Aquaris M10 from Spanish manufacturer BQ. It is equipped with a 10.1 display with a resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels. Under the hood is a Mediatek MT8163B SoC with quad-core CPU clocked at 1.3 GHz, 2GB of RAM and 16GB of onboard storage. It is definitely not a powerhouse, but the key features are the onboard HDMI and USB Host that allow you to dock the device to a monitor plus keyboard, mouse combo. Also, the 7,280 mAh battery is a definite plus.

Just like Microsoft’s Continuum, the experience is still in its infancy, but Canonical is confident that it already has a library of supported apps to cover most basic use cases. If nothing else, most browsers scale nicely and so do LibreOffice apps, so Ubuntu Convergence is usable even in this early state. Canonical also feels confident that Ubuntu’s technically skilled fans will find a way to load the OS onto other devices, as the Convergence feature is now basically a part of the latest version of the Ubuntu mobile OS.

Xiaomi Piston 3: los auriculares low cost con sonido premium

Seguramente conozcas la marca asiática Xiaomi por ser una de las firmas que mejor relación calidad precio ofrece en sus dispositivos. Hace poco tiempo, te presentamos el Xiaomi Redmi 3 en Andro4all, un ejemplo más de hacer las cosas bien y a bajo precio.

A parte de hacer tablets y smarphones, Xiaomi tiene una línea de auriculares a los que denomina Piston. Cómo no, se caracterizan por ofrecer la mayor calidad al menor precio posible. Hemos usado los nuevos Xiaomi Piston 3, que os presentamos hace un tiempo, y al usarlos nos han sorprendido gratamente, así que vamos a pasar a comentarte cual ha sido nuestra experiencia con la última novedad de Xiaomi a nivel auditivo.

Diseño y acabado

La propia caja logra que nos demos cuenta de que Xiaomi ha puesto todo el mimo posible a la hora de fabricar sus Piston 3. Se trata de una caja pequeña y discreta, que contiene los auriculares y tres recambios de goma, desde la talla XS a la L. Todavía no podemos hacer spoiler del precio, pero debes saber que para lo que cuestan tienen un acabado inmejorable.

Encontramos un diseño que combina aluminio cepillado con plástico, elegante y bonito. Los auriculares son in ear, con los típicos recubrimientos de goma intercambiables. En cuanto al cable, tiene un buen acabado aunque nos da una sensación de fragilidad frente a los tirones. Ya se verá con el tiempo cómo envejece.

Funcionalidad

Los Piston 3 de Xiaomi vienen con un control de tres botones a mitad del cable. Este hará las funciones de subir y bajar volumen, cambiar de canción, pausarla o renaudarla. A parte de esto te servirá como botón para descolgar las llamadas, ya que incluyen un micrófono para la función de manos libres.

Este control está bien construido, aunque echamos en falta algo más de calidad en los botones. En algunas ocasiones no sabemos si los estamos pulsando bien, ya que tienen poco recorrido. Por lo demás, funcionan sin mayor problema y dichos controles se podrán utilizar independientemente de la versión de Android que utilicemos.

Sonido

De nada sirve tener un acabado excelente y un sonido mediocre. Sin embargo damos gracias a Xiaomi ya que este no es el caso. El sonido es más que aceptable, claro y nítido. Lo que temía sobre todo era esa falta de claridad en el sonido que tienen los auriculares baratos, pero los Piston 3 cumplen se sobra. Para que os hagáis una idea, el sonido es muy similar al de los Earpods de Apple (los cuales llevo usando un año). No son igual de buenos, pero casi.

Tenemos una buena respuesta de graves y medios, aunque el sonido no es todo lo plano que debería ser. De todas formas, con un buen ecualizador siempre podrás corregir los parámetros para que todo suene a tu gusto. Para el precio que tienen sobresalen, cualquier usuario quedará conforme.

Conclusión

Llegó la hora de la verdad y de saber por cuánto puedes comprar estos Xiaomi Piston 3. Cómo has podido apreciar, la calidad de audio y de fabricación son muy buenas, son unos auriculares para usar todos los días. Unos 15 euros sí, has leído bien. Por esta ridícula cantidad podrás disfrutar de los que sin duda son los mejores auriculares en relación calidad precio del mercado.

Encuentran ficheros de Linux en Windows 10 ¿raro?

Una noticia ha recorrido los medios como todo un descubrimiento y asombro, se trata de un descubrimiento hecho por WalkingCat, un hacker que ha detectado ciertos ficheros que pertenecen a Linux pero que misteriosamente estaban en Microsoft Windows 10 con la nueva actualización que ha recibido el sistema operativo de Redmond. Insisto, muchos medios lo han visto como algo sorprendente, pero… ¿lo es?

Microsoft pretendía que Windows 10 tuviese un sistema capaz de ejecutar apps nativas de Android y éste sistema de Google tiene kernel Linux, por tanto, al igual que Wine pueda tener similitudes como librerías .dll de Windows o un registro Windows para que el software nativo de Microsoft Windows funcione en sistemas *nix, Windows 10 también deberá tener “algo” de Linux para hacer correr estas apps.

Todo viene cuando WalkingCat, este hacker desconocido ha encontrado ficheros como el LXss.sys y el LXCore.sys que han llegado al sistema de Microsoft con la última actualización que ha tenido Windows 10. El hacker alega que un subsistema de Windows 10 no solo contiene estos ficheros, sino que funciona igual que Linux, insisto, ¿algo normal?, bueno si pretende correr las apps de Android sí, pero…

No todo está tan claro y no es tan normal como pueda parecer a primera vista, porque si recordamos, Microsoft abandonó el Project Astoria de forma definitiva. Este proyecto pretendía que los desarrolladores trasladaran aplicaciones Android al de  Microsoft. Pero para más inri, el proyecto estaba destinado a Windows Phone y no al sistema de escritorio. En este caso sí sería raro… ¿Habrá cambiado de idea Microsoft y quiere resucitar el Project Astoria o es que nos tiene guardada alguna otra rorpresa?

Samsung Galaxy J7 (2016) and Galaxy J5 (2016) pass Bluetooth SIG certification

The Samsung Galaxy J7 (2016) and the Galaxy J5 (2016) are now one step closer to market launch, as they successfully passed Bluetooth SIG certification. The predecessors of the two phones came out in June 2015, but the 2016 editions might be a little early.

According to leaked benchmark results, the Galaxy J7 (2016) will have two versions – one with an Exynos 7870 chip, and another with a Snapdragon 615. The two versions will have different screen resolutions on the 5.5″ display and RAM. The Exynos one will tout a 720p screen and 2GB of RAM, while the Snapdragon model will come with 3GB of RAM and 1080p display.

The chipset of the Galaxy J5 (2016) has also been revealed through a leaked benchmark, and it’s going to be a Snapdragon 410 one with a 1.2 GHz quad-core Cortex-A53 CPU. The other known specs so far include a 12 or 13 MP rear camera with LED flash, a 5 MP selfie shooter, 2GB of RAM, and 16GB of built-in storage.

Pricing and availability are yet to be announced. While MWC 2016 is a good opportunity for Samsung to officially reveal the phones, the company is unlikely to risk drawing any attention away from the Galaxy S7 lineup so those will probably come at a different point.

Apple starts iPhone screen protector installation program in Japan

Apple has started iPhone screen protector installation program in Japan, along with Belkin. Apple customers in Japan will be able to hop down to their local Apple Store and get the Belkin screen protector professionally installed on their iPhone using an installation machine.

The device allows placing the screen protector in place with the phone aligned on top and then when the protective film is pulled out the screen protector is precisely applied on top of the phone without any air bubbles. Still, if you’re not satisfied, they will reapply another one for no additional cost.

Facebook Is Making Significant Changes To The News Feed

Earlier this week, Facebook said it was changing the News Feed algorithm so that posts that you are not interested in are less likely to appear at the top. Generally, the order of your News Feed is based on how much you like, comment, click or share similar posts.
To gain a better understanding of how to improve the News Feed, Facebook said that it asks over a thousand users to rate their experience every day and provide feedback about how to improve content — which is known as Feed Quality Panel. And Facebook surveys tens of thousands of users around the world to learn more about how well their feed is being ranked. Users are asked to rank each post from one to five stars while responding to the question: “how much did you want to see this story in your News Feed?”
Facebook noticed users reported having a better News Feed experience when stories they see at the top are the ones that they are likely to rate highly if asked and likely to engage with. Going forward, the Facebook News Feed will be updated to combine those two signals. Essentially, the Facebook News Feed will begin to look at the probability that you would want to see the story at the top of your feed and the probability that you will like, comment, click or share the story. And Facebook will start ranking stories higher in the feed which it thinks users may take action on.
Facebook Pages may notice a change in engagement depending on the composition of their audience and posting activity. Facebook said that this update should not impact reach or referral traffic meaningfully for the majority of Pages. “Some Pages may see some increases in referral traffic, and some Pages may see some declines in referral traffic. Pages might see some declines in referral traffic if the rate at which their stories are clicked on does not match how much people report wanting to see those stories near the top of their News Feed. This update helps rebalance those two factors, so people are seeing relevant stories to them,” said Facebook in a blog post.
To override the News Feed changes, you can take advantage of the “See First” feature. When you apply “See First” to one of your friends or Page, their posts will appear at the top of your News Feed. You can also adjust your News Feed by tapping on the drop-down arrow on the desktop version of Facebook and selecting “News Feed Preferences.”
With over 1.6 billion users, Facebook celebrated its 12th anniversary on Thursday February 4th (known as Friends Day). Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said that the social network is aiming to hit 5 billion users by the year 2030. Facebook’s user base doubled from 2011 and it is claiming that the degrees of separation between each user shrunk from 3.74 to 3.57 degrees.
