It’s not news that Adobe Flash has a long history of security vulnerabilities. Three new zero-day exploits, or previously undiscovered security flaws which malicious hackers can take advantage of, were discovered this month alone in the aftermath of the Hacking Team hack, in which a trove of internal documents from the ethically challenged Italian surveillance firm were dumped online. It took mere days for the vulnerabilities to be found in exploit kits used to infect people with ransomware. And these aren’t the first Flash exploits to be found this year.

After an all-out four-day weekend in Los Angeles, Anime Expo closed its doors for another year on July 5. Finally, Marc Perez  has a few moments to breathe. “The hours are very nice a couple of months out of the year,” the CEO of the Society for the Promotion of Japanese Animation (SPJA), says of his job. Then it’s another 11 months of pre-con crunch time.
Anime Expo is the SPJA’s most popular con as well as the largest Japanese anime convention in North America. With nearly 100,000 in attendance, it is almost as big as San Diego Comic-Con, the continent’s most popular convention. Once considered to be niche curiosities, fan conventions like Anime Expo are too big to be ignored, even by Los Angeles’s mayor, Eric Garcetti, who personally welcomed the event, declaring each July 3 as “Anime Expo Day” in the city. In 2014, Anime Expo brought $55 million to Los Angeles, mainly in commerce, tourism, and dining sectors, making it one of the events with strongest economic impact on the city. The 2015 event, saw attendance increase by 12%.
Despite its enormous economic impact, you might be surprised to discover that Anime Expo is run as a 503(c)(6) tax-exempt non-profit. Like most companies in this categorization, it is run by a board of directors and publicly discloses its earnings every year. As a non-profit, the SPJA usually brings in as much as it makes, by charging admittance to attendees, table fees to exhibitors, and advertising space to sponsors. According to 2011 records on Guidestar, the company brought in $3 million, and spent slightly more than that organizing the next year’s event. It’s a typical cash flow for the company, since Anime Expo keeps attracting more fans (and therefore costing a little more) every year.
Of the 10 largest anime conventions in North America, Anime Expo and seven others qualify as non-profit ventures. In order to gather each convention’s leadership together to discuss the challenges and concerns of running a non-profit, the SPJA puts on five meta conferences under the title Project Anime. Marlan Moore, SPJA’s Project Anime coordinator, said that organizers often have a sense of pride about their non-profit, as opposed to for-profit status.
“A lot of them are actually pretty proud of being non-profit,” he said. “It shows they haven’t sold out, that they’re fans first and they’re trying to promote the fandom.”
