The Snapdragon 810 SoC has been shrouded in a lot of controversy ever since it was first announced. The chips has been plagued with overheating issues and accusations that it simply didn't manage to shake. It seems that despite all of Qualcomm's hard work, fixes and improvements, the beastly chipset still heats up under pressure, a fact that cost the company one of its biggest clients – Samsung, quite early on in the development cycle of the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge.
Others did adopt Qualcomm's chip, but, market statistics now show that it is a major flop. The Snapdragon 810 didn't sell nearly as many units as anticipated. The heat issues confirmed with Sony's eagerly-anticipated flagship models – the Xperia Z4 and Xperia Z3+ were the more or less the final nail in the coffin of Qualcomm's flagship SoC. These handsets supposedly run on a revision 2.1 of the Snapdragon 810, meaning that, at this point, the design seems so fatally flawed that it is beyond salvageable.
All in all, the Snapdragon 810's market failure comes as no reals surprise. On the other hand, the consequences it entails could dramatically reshape the mobile world for years to come. We'll just have to wait and see.

Seguro que muchos de vosotros habéis utilizado alguna vez XBMC, el programa que servía para tener un centro multimedia en toda su esencia, que también estaba disponible para Android. Pero hace un tiempo, XBMC “desapareció” y pasó a llamarse Kodi, un proyecto actualizado de la fundación XBMC con la misma idea del servicio original.
La noticia hoy es que Kodi para Android, que hasta ahora solo podía probarse con invitación, o descargando el archivo APK, ya está disponible para que cualquier usuario lo pueda instalar a través de Google Play, y por supuesto, de forma totalmente gratuita (es una plataforma open source). Sin duda, esto solo se traduce en buenas noticias para aquellos que ya eran habituales de XBMC, y también para todos aquellos que suelen consumir bastante contenido multimedia con su smartphone y tablet. Con Kodi, las posibilidades se multiplican.
Kodi va más allá de ser un simple reproductor de vídeo, como sí lo son VLC o Reproductor MX, y es que pretende ser un completo centro multimedia con el que disfrutar solos o acompañados. Con esta aplicación, podremos gestionar todos nuestros archivos multimedia a través de bibliotecas, de forma que el acceso al contenido es mucho más ágil e intuitivo gracias a la organización que proporciona, y a su cómoda interfaz de usuario (similar a la de XBMC), perfectamente adaptada a dispositivos móviles, especialmente a tablets y teléfonos con pantallas grandes.
Kodi para Android es capaz de relacionar y descargar automáticamente información del contenido que tengamos almacenado. Por ejemplo, en películas, veremos como nos aparecen carátulas, sinopsis, repartos, y demás datos útiles, y esto también nos servirá de ayuda a la hora de filtrar búsquedas según diferentes parámetros. También cabe destacar los muchos añadidos o add-ons que podemos usar, incluso para ver televisión o escuchar radio online.
Decíamos que Kodi está totalmente adaptado a pantallas grandes, pero sin duda, la mejor forma para sacarle todo el partido es conectando nuestro dispositivo a un monitor externo o un televisor, ya sea mediante MHL, soportado por la mayoría de smartphones y tablets de gama media y alta, o HDMI, salida que muchas tablets del mercado ya incorporan. De esta manera, sí que podemos decir que tenemos un auténtico centro multimedia en nuestro salón, nuestra habitación, etc.
También puede ser muy interesante utilizar Kodi en televisiones con Android TV o en cualquier TV-Box con Android, como por ejemplo, el Google Nexus Player, o la NVIDIA SHIELD Android TV, que recientemente acaba de ponerse a la venta en algunos mercados.
Sin duda, Kodi es un complemento ideal y prácticamente indispensable para los que tienen muchas películas, series e imágenes y fotografías guardadas, y quieren disfrutar de ellas de la mejor forma posible. Por el momento, sigue en fase beta, aunque su desarrollo está bastante avanzado y funciona bien. Es compatible con Android 4.2 Jelly Bean y superiores, y como decíamos, ya se puede descargar gratis en Google Play.
