Weekly poll: Apple iPhone SE, Hot or Not?

The Apple iPhone SE sparked a debate in our office – some sighed “finally! a compact flagship” others shook their heads, saying “5+ inches or bust.”

Apple’s tagline for the 4″ phone is “A big step for small,” contrast that with the “Bigger than bigger” subheading of the 5.5″ iPhone 6(s) Plus. It is more or less an iPhone 6s guts inside an iPhone 5s body (well, except for the Touch ID, 3D Touch and selfie camera).

The upgrades over the 5s – which many still consider a good enough phone – include a 12MP camera with 4K video, the new, faster A9 chipset with double the RAM and Apple…

Week 12 in review: iPhone SE, iPad Pro, HTC 10

Another week flew by and we once again and it had no shortage of exciting mobile news to offer. Apple held its scheduled event and, as expected, outed a pair of new devices, both highly intriguing. The iPhone SE is a reboot of the 4-inch form factor, which isn’t enjoying universal appeal in 2016, but other than that, the pocked-friendly phone seems to have checked all many boxes, offering an up to date platform and camera. It will fill in for the now discontinued iPhone 5s.

As for the new iPad Pro, the exact title match with its 12.9-inch sibling seems to be the least of its problems….

Top 10 trending phones of the week

This week was dramatic for our Top 10 Trending phones chart as the iPhone SE led Apple phones on a charge against the Galaxys, which usually dominate.

The Apple iPhone SE shot up into the stratosphere with double the weekly interest of the Galaxy S7 and close to three times the eyeballs that the Galaxy S7 edge pulled in.

But things actually started last week with the iPhone 5s. It broke into the Top 10 again last week at #9, we guess people were comparing it against the rumored spec of the SE. Now that the iPhone SE is official, the comparisons intensified leading the 5s up to the…

Instagram for web gets Explore and Notifications

Instagram has pushed a small update for its website, that gets two important additions.

The site now features buttons for Explore and Notifications. The Explore section shows people you might know and would want to follow. The Notifications section, as you might imagine, shows all your notifications. These features were only accessible on the app before. Unfortunately, you still can’t see your friends’ activity on the site and that’s still limited to the app.

The app also gets some minor server side changes. The like, comment, share buttons are slightly redesigned, and the…

Google Cast is the next evolution of Chromecast, now with an accent on third-party support

Google’s own video and audio casting platform seems to have undergone a significant image change. If you are currently using a Chromecast device, you might have noticed that after its last update, the Chromecast app is now called Google Cast. Not much has changed withing the update in terms of functionality, but the re-branding is definitely more than mere cosmetic work.

Like the new name suggests, Google is now branching out and trying to convey the message that its casting solution is no longer a proprietary thing. Besides its own dongles, the platform is now supported by a…

A sneak peek at Microsoft’s upcoming Skype Universal app

Now that Microsoft is vigorously pushing Windows 10 and the new Universal Windows Platform for apps, it is only natural that the first development efforts come from the US giant itself. In light of this, there seems to be a new Skype UWP app on the way. It is still in beta, but the folks at mspoweruser.com got their hands on an early copy on both Windows 10 PC and Mobile for a first look and some screenshots.

As a quick reminder, in theory, the code running on both the PC and the mobile environments should be identical with a self-adapting interface. This is the essence of the new…

Alleged HTC 10 listing and live images leave little to the imagination

Now that both the Samsung Galaxy S7 and the LG G5 are off the starting line and already exciting Android fans, the rumor mill has refocused its attention to HTC. The Taiwanese giant is still quite tardy to the flagship race, but that could very well be a god thing, as it leaves plenty of time for the HTC 10, formerly known as the HTC One M10, to gather hype before its alleged April 12, or perhaps April 15 release.

Today, a new development, offers us a very up-close and personal look an the handset’s design and particularly that of its metal chassis. A rather interesting listing has…
