The first Samsung Galaxy Note5 ad goes live

Samsung released the first TV ad for the freshly announced Samsung Galaxy Note5. The flagship phablet will hit the shelves in the United States in less than a week, on August 21.

Unsurprisingly, the ad focuses on Samsung Galaxy Note5’s two biggest highlights. The latter include brand new design language, as well as the product family-defining S Pen.

You can find out more about Samsung Galaxy Note5 in our detailed first look.

Next generation Moto 360 to likely come in two sizes

We have been seeing leaks of the second generation Moto 360 for a while, including a brief leak in Motorola’s own tweet, which showed off the design to some extent. Now it seems the watch will be available in two sizes.

According to the listings over at Anatel, Brazil’s federal telecom regulator, there are two devices named 360S and 360L. The 360S model has a 270mAh battery, while the 360L model has a 375mAh battery. In comparison, the current Moto 360 has a 320mAh battery.

This does lead us to believe that these are indeed two different sizes of the watch. The current Moto 360, although not particularly large, was still quite large for those with smaller wrists. As such it makes sense for Motorola to introduce two sizes, the way Apple did with the Apple Watch.

Windows 10 installations exceed 50M, new cumulative update is out

A little over two weeks after the official launch of Windows 10, the number of installations of the new OS has passed the 50 million mark. Even though the adoption may seem to have slowed down after the initial 14 million in 24 hours, the numbers will inevitably continue to climb as Microsoft gradually expands the range of devices to receive the update.

Ever since day one the new OS has been available in 190 countries, but the wave-like fashion of the process has meant that certain devices will get the update sooner than others. The source states that a large number of devices were added to last week’s wave, hence the growing install count.

Meanwhile, a new cumulative update has been rolled out, bringing “improvements to enhance the functionality of Windows 10”. The build number is 3081438 and the update weighs in at 180MB for 32-bit systems and twice as much for 64-bit ones. Due to its cumulative nature, however, only the bits that you haven’t installed with previous fixes will be downloaded.

First renders of the Huawei Nexus phone are here

As we already know, the 2015 generation Nexus will come in two incarnations, one made by LG, the other by Huawei. Leakster @OnLeaks seems to be keeping good track of both versions and recently outed both sets of specs, though with varying levels of certainty.

A couple of days later the first renders of the LG Nexus 5 (2015) ensued and it was only natural that the Huawei Nexus 6 (2015) will come next. Here it is, sporting a full metal build, though both the materials and color scheme are purely the vision of the 3D artist and will not necessarily be in the final product. That said, the metal body seems more than likely, given that another reputable source was spotted saying it.

Setting build aside, the device in the renders features a fingerprint sensor on the back, much like on the lesser LG version. Unlike that one, however, the Huawei Nexus’ main camera sits off-center, but is still joined by a dual-LED dual-tone flash.

The symmetrical design with two cutouts on the front for stereo speakers is similar between the two models, and so is the Type-C microUSB port – the next big thing in wired smartphone connectivity.

For the full 360-degree view of both front and back, check out the video below. And do keep in mind, as usual, that despite the source’s solid track record, the final device may still end up slightly different from these renders.

Android M to be named Marshmallow, Googlers Nat and Lo suggest

Ever since Google announced Android M back in May, two of the most intriguing questions, if by far not the most important ones, have been what exactly version number the new OS will carry and what the M will stand for.

The general consesus on the first point is that Android M will only bump the digits to 5.2, but the next version candy remains a mystery. Among the myriad of options, so far Milkshake, Muffin and Marshmallow have emerged as favorites, and this new insider video on YouTube points to the latter. Now, when we say “insider” we mean Google employees Nat and Lo, who in their own words aren’t familiar with everything that goes on at the tech giant (as if Larry page himself is).

Anyhow, the two ladies have come up with a short song, titled “What’s M gonna be?”, which lists a whole bunch of naming possibilities. Musical qualities aside, the video ends with a guy sandblasting/painting a white half-droid, which looks suspiciously like a marshmallow.

You don’t need us to tell you, but we will anyway, that the video may very well be a ploy to throw us in the wrong direction. So don’t be surprised if come announcement date the same white half-droid shows up on stage, only to have a muffin come out of…

EISA Awards results are out, Huawei P8 voted Best consumer smartphone

The European Imaging and Sound Association (EISA) has announced the winners of its annual Best Product awards. The Mobile devices category is the one that interests us most, with prizes awarded in a number of sub-categories.

The Huawei P8 snatches the Best Product award for consumer smartphone – the all-round smartphone winner, as voted by the editors of participating multimedia publications throughout the continent.

More specific trophies go in other directions and the Samsung Galaxy S6 edge gets the European advanced smartphone title. The Sony Xperia Z3+ doesn’t leave empty-handed and is voted European multimedia smartphone. There’s a single Tablet category, won this year by the Lenovo Yoga Tablet 2 Pro.

However, it is LG that is arguably the biggest winner this year, taking home not one but two titles. The LG G4 is deemed to have the best smartphone camera, while the LG Watch Urbane is crowned best wearable device.

Alleged BlackBerry Venice photo shows onscreen keyboard

The Blackberry Venice has been entertaining our imagination ever since the company gave us a fleeting glimpse of the smartphone at MWC back in March. There’s been new info trickling out every now and then, and we’ve been led to believe it’s set to arrive in November on AT&T.

Evident from the start, the Venice will be a slider, with the physical keyboard tucked underneath the display, when not in use. Imagine though, you’re not writing a lengthy business email, but only need to jot down a quick note. Well, there will be an onscreen keyboard for those occasions, or at least that’s what this new leaked image suggests.

As we already know by now, the BlackBerry Venice will be running on Android, and this onscreen keyboard looks very much like the stock Google keyboard, with separate number keys and a touch of BlackBerry black.

Of course, we don’t have solid proof that the photo is genuine, so take it with the customary dose of…

Comcast is prepping a YouTube rival named Watchable

Comcast is gearing up to launch a video streaming platform to compete with YouTube and Facebook, Business Insider reports. The service will be called Watchable (though there’s a slight chance the name may change) and will initially be available to the company’s Xfinity X1 smart TV box users.

Comcast will be partnering with publishers like Buzzfeed, Vox, The Onion and NBC Sports (preliminary list, set to expand), who will provide all of their original content. The deal will be non-exclusive though, so they will be able to post on Facebook as well.

While the X1 boxes are currently in use by only a few million subscribers, Comcast is planning to replace all of its customers’ existing units to the X1 solution by 2017, thus providing tens of millions of outlets for video advertising. The service will eventually make the plunge into mobile as well, with iOS and Android devices making for an even wider target audience.

Since the publishers won’t be getting paid for the content, advertising will be the only profit-making mechanism, available to the publishers. It should be a pretty lucrative one nonetheless, considering that insiders put Comcast as the number one seller of video ads in the United…

Google scraps Project Ara’s Puerto Rico pilot program

Back in January this year, Google announced that the Caribbean country of Puerto Rico will be the first test market for its Project Ara modular smartphone. However, the company has now said that they are re-routing their “Market Pilot” (as they call it).

And this is not goodbye Puerto Rico! Nos vemos en el futuro! #ProjectAra #tilwemeetagain— Project Ara (@ProjectAra) August 13, 2015

While there was no word on the reason behind the decision to change the location as well as the new initial test market, the company made it clear that they are not saying a permanent goodbye to Puerto Rico. In a separate tweet, the Project Ara team also said that further details on the matter will be announced sometime next week.

More updates coming your way next week. Stay with us. #ProjectAra— Project Ara (@ProjectAra) August 13, 2015

If you aren’t in the know, Puerto Rico was initially chosen due to its high percentage of mobile internet usage, providing the company optimum testing ground for the new…
