Apple officially unveils the iPhone 6s with 3D Touch display

At today’s Apple event the company pulled the wraps off the iPhone 6s. The phone keeps the exterior of its predecessor, but features all new internals and some nice new extras. Those include a new processor, updated cameras at the front and back, and a pressure sensitive 3D Touch display.

3D Touch

In addition to multitouch, the new iPhone 6s recognizes force. It works on the homescreen and gives you shortcuts on the stuff you do frequently. Pressing lightly on an email thread, gives you a preview of the message, for example.

It also provides distinct and tactile feedback to your presses. Under the display, there’s a vibrating “Taptic engine”, which is similar to the one found on the Macbook trackpad and on the Apple Watch.

Otherwise, the display is the same 4.7″ Retina display found on the iPhone 6.

A9 chipset

Debuting on the iPhone 6s is the Apple A9 chipset. It’s the ocmpany’s third generation 64-bit chipset and offers up to 90% faster console-class GPU as well as up to 70% faster CPU performance, according to the company. It also offers new transistor architecture, which Apple is yet to expand upon.

The M9 co-processor is also updated. However, we’re yet to find out how it has been improved.

New 12MP iSight camera

The iPhone 6s features Apple’s all new 12MP iSight camera. It features 50% more pixels as well as 50% more focus pixels.

The new 12MP camera can now shoot 4K video, too.

Interestingly, the front-facing camera is now 5MP and uses the LCD display as a true-tone flash. There’s a special chip inside the iPhone 6s, which drives the display up to 3x brighter in order to provide the best possible lighting for your selfies.

2-nd generation TouchID

It’s two times faster than the first generation TouchID, as per Phill Schiller.

Enhanced connectivity

The iPhone 6s ships with LTE Advanced as well as twice as fast Wi-Fi. The latter is probably thanks to MiMo antenna technology inside, but that hasn’t been confirmed just yet.

Accessories

Apple also unveiled new accessories – a bunch of leather and silicone cases. There’s also a new charging dock, which will be offered in the same four colors as the iPhone 6s.

Pricing

The Apple iPhone 6s will be priced just like the iPhone 6. In the US, the phone will cost $199 for the 16GB model with a two-year contract. The 64GB and 128GB ones will retail for $299 and $399, respectively.

Pre-orders start September 12, while sales commence on September 25. The phone will launch in the US, UK, Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, Hong Kong and Japan….

The new Apple TV has a Bluetooth remote with touch and Siri

At its event today Apple didn’t only introduce new phones and tablets. The new Apple TV made its debut as well.

The new set top box comes with an innovative remote that has a glass touch surface on the top, which lets you glide across lists, hopefully making the task of navigating the interface easier than it’s been before. Touch interaction is also employed when you want to skip ahead in a movie or TV show you’re watching.

The remote comes with Siri built-in too, and you can talk to her and ask her things with a dedicated button. If you’re looking for something to watch, Siri searches through iTunes, Netflix, Hulu, HBO, and Showtime. You’re also able to ask Siri stuff while you’re watching something, including things related to the content you’re seeing such as “Who stars in this?”. In these cases, Siri will answer in the lower part of the TV interface, so as not to disturb your viewing. Commands like “Siri, skip ahead 5 minutes” work too.

Apple Music is now a feature in Apple TV, and there’s an app store for access to even more stuff. You have access to your photos, and new high-res video screensavers are included.

Games are a big part of the new Apple TV platform, and the new remote acts as a gamepad when needed. Expect to see Apple TV versions of a lot of popular iOS games soon, as well as some exclusive titles. For some reason, you’ll be able to do shopping on your Apple TV if you want to, with big images of clothes, for example, showing up on your TV. Upcoming apps will be responsible for this.

The new Apple TV has a 64-bit A8 chip. The remote works via Bluetooth 4.0 and has an accelerometer, a gyro, three-month battery life with normal use, and the Lightning port for charging.

For the 32GB version of the set top box you’ll have to pay $149, while the 64GB model will retail for $199. They will both be out in late October in over 80 countries, with 100 countries getting the new Apple TV by the end of the year. Interestingly, the existing Apple TV will still be sold for $69. Developers will get their hands on the new version of tvOS today, so they can start working on those…

Apple iPad Pro with 12.9″ is now official

The first major announcement made by Apple today was the new iPad Pro, which was rumored for quite some time. The iPad Pro packs a big 12.9″ display with 2732 x 2048 pixels resolution, which keeps the same pixel density as the iPad Air 2 – 264ppi.

The new display is capable of variable fresh rate, which should improve the batter life. It also comes with a new accessory called announced Apple Pencil – an active stylus specifically designed for the iPad Pro. You can draw various diagrams and stuff on most of the system apps – they have been already updated to support it.

The iPad Pro is powered by a brand new A9x chip, which according to Apple offers twice the memory bandwidth of the A8x (within the iPad Air 2), twice the flash storage speed, 1.8x better overall performance and twice the GPU processing power. We can’t confirm the new CPU core count and clock, neither can we yet detail the GPU and RAM amount.

Apple also says the iPad Pro is faster than 90% of all portable PCs shipped within the last year.

The iPad Pro has a promised battery life of 10 hours if you are to use it nonstop.

Apple iPad Pro comes with four speaker system, which support automatic balance depending on how you tilt the slate. There is no word if this is a surround setup, or just a double stereo, but we’d bet on the latter.

The iPad Pro is big, but it’s just 6.9mm thin and weighs 712g, which is decent for the size.

Apple announced another exclusive accessory for the iPad Pro – the Smart Keyboard, which is basically Apple’s take on the Surface Type cover.

The Smart Keyboard is an external keyboard, which is magnetically attached via the new magnetic smart connector. It offers a full-blown keyboard and thus you’ll have the entire screen estate for your apps.

The Apple Pencil do the same things an S-Pen does – you can draw on documents, emails, add notes to word/excel documents. Apple announced it has cooperated with Microsoft and the MS Office was optimized for the iPad Pro and its Apple Pencil.

Apple iPad Pro runs on iOS 9 by default and it supports picture-in-picture and spilt screen view.

The Apple iPad Pro comes with the same 8MP iSight camera the Apple iPad Air 2 offered. Its connectivity options are virtually the same – Bluetooth, Wi-Fiac, and optional LTE Cat.4 support. There is a Touch ID sensor as well.

Apple iPad Pro will become available in November in Silver, Space Gray and Gold. The avaialble storage options are 32GB ($799) and 128GB ($949). The LTE model comes with 128GB only and costs $1079.

Watch the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus announcement live here

Apple’s unveiling event for the next iPhone duo is almost upon us and we hope you have your popcorn ready, as it is shaping up to be quite entertaining. The venue is set for 10 AM PDT (or 5PM GMT). Naturally, Cupertino will be offering a live stream so you can all follow along, but unlike previous years that privilege won’t be reserved for Apple device owners only.

Apple promised access for PC users as well, so long as they are running on Windows 10 and Microsoft Edge browser. Well that is a step forward, but not quite there. If you are on an Apple device, however, you are most-likely covered with support for iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with Safari on iOS 7.0 or later, Mac with Safari 6.0.5 or later on OS X v10.8.5 and also a second or third generation Apple TV.

As it turns out, the Apple TV channel was quite useful in finding a direct source for the stream. As far as we currently know, this is it:

http://ift.tt/1K6OOcs

You should be able to play it with VLC player, but it is currently down. Hopefully, the address won’t change, but if it does, we’ll make sure to update it or do everything we can to find an alternative source.

As for the event itself, we have a lot to look forward to. Besides the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus, there have been quite a few rumors of a new Apple TV, geared towards gamers. Also, perhaps we will finally see the 12.9-inch iPad Pro that we have been hearing about since 2014. If you are really eager, you can get a better picture of these rumors in our news section or simply wait it out to see what Apple truly has in store for the tech world this…

Samsung denies plans for cutting 10% of its staff, but will freeze salaries

Yesterday Bloomberg reported Samsung has plans to cut 10% of its staff located in the South Korea HQ. This meant about 10,000 workers had their jobs at stake.

Today a high-ranking Samsung official denied such plans. The rumor isn’t entirely false though, as it was based on some upcoming restructuring. While Samsung won’t be laying off any workers, it will relocate some of them to other offices.

Another plan is also put in motion – Samsung will be freezing the salaries of its workers for the first time since 2009. This is the outcome of the good, but unsatisfactory Q2 earnings report, which revealed a massive 38% drop in the operating income of the mobile division.

So, Samsung workers are safe for now, though with frozen salaries, and some of them will be reassigned to different locations. But if the next earning reports don’t improve the current situation, the false prediction may eventually come to pass.
