The top 10 trending phones of week 39

Plenty of action this week in our Top 10 trending phones chart and a new leader – the Motorola Moto X Play stormed to the top the second week of its participation. It entered in fourth last week and was quick to assert dominance over Apple and Samsung flagships and budget models alike.

The Samsung Galaxy J7, which is a regular entrant in the chart, but typically occupies the middle, climbed all the way up to second spot. The Galaxy Note5 keeps its third position on the podium, after slipping there last week from its runner-up spot the week before.

Down the chart it’s all Samsung, Apple and Motorola. The Galaxy J5 and Grand Prime budget models are in fourth in fifth, followed by the brand new Apple iPhone 6s. The Moto G (3rd gen) is in seventh, comfortably ahead of the Galaxy A8.

Long time chart king from a few months ago, the Galaxy S6 is now happy to be among the Top 10 at all, rocking between 9th and 10th over the past couple of weeks, this time in 9th. The old iPhone 6 keeps it company and completes this week’s Top 10 trending phones list.

Week 39 in review: Xiaomi Mi 4c, Meizu Pro 5 and Nexus rumors

Another week passed, so let us recap some of the highlights of the past few days. First things first – after thoroughly examining the Sony Xperia Z5 Premium and its behavior and utilization of the 4K display, we can happily say that Sony has officially confirmed our findings. The Japanese giant also explained why the 1080p UI was necessary in a press release, so that’s the end of that mystery.

Major announcements from last week were the Xiaomi Mi 4c and Meizu Pro 5. Both devices were eagerly anticipated and they mostly confirmed rumors about them from earlier in the month. The Mi 4c has a Snapdragon 808 SoC and a front-facing camera that the OEM is confident can take on the one in the iPhone 6, all without breaking the bank.

The Meizu Pro 5, on the other hand, is said to be the ambassador to the company’s new exquisite high-end lineup. The 5.7-inch phablet runs on Samsung’s powerful Exynos 7420 chip and makes great promiese in terms of design and build quality – all at at appropriately high price tag, of course.

A new wave of Lumia devices has also been keeping the industry on its toes. The Lumia 950 and 950 XL should be arriving shortly and we already have an idea of their respective price tags, as well as some specs. The Lumia 550 should follow shortly, as well.

But, we can’t tour the rumor mill and not mention the upcoming Nexus duo. Rumors of the pair have been flying all over the place and after the Huawei Nexus 6P and LG Nexus 5X monikers were confirmed, we have been seeing more and more of the phones, including some specs, quite a few renders and leaked shots for both models.

In other news, the HTC One A9 is also quite near on the horizon and already featured in specs and image leaks. The same goes for the dual-screen LG V10, that promises to spice things up a bit, after the LG Class was made official this week.

For this and more, check out this quick run-down of our most popular articles below.

Weekly poll: iPhone 6s or iPhone 6s Plus – which one are you getting

Overenthusiastic Apple fans around the world (well, in a dozen countries, really) have already received what were likely carefully planned first-minute pre-orders of the latest iPhone 6s/6s Plus. But did you go for pocketability and try to stay true to the original Apple ideology of small screens, or did you opt for the second-gen Plus-sized iPhone, all 5.5 inches and 192g of it?

Two days into open sales, the question is relevant as ever to the more patient folk – “which one should I get”? It’s a textbook case of size does matter, with the only other significant difference between the two being the optical image stabilization in the Plus’ camera. So, you should basically get the one you like better, and you should tell us about it.

Both these groups’ input is what we’re seeking in this week’s poll, which aims to establish the proportions of phablet vs. phone users in the Apple realm. Fire away and feel free to share the reasoning behind your choice in the comments….

Top ten fan favorite phones in September

Our Top 10 trending chart counts specs page hits, mostly dictated by practical considerations in the lines of price, size, network coverage, the like. In other words, “Which one should I buy” type of attitude drives those numbers.

Fan love doesn’t live within such constraints and our September chart of Top 10 fan favorite phones shows markedly different results than the trending lists of late. Starting from the top, it’s the Sony Xperia Z5 Premium that’s gathered up the strongest fanbase this month, ahead of the OnePlus 2 – both Sony and OnePlus have a reputation for a near cult-like following, so no surprises here.

The list continues with a pair of Samsung Galaxy Notes. It’s the Note5 that takes third spot in terms of newly discovered devotees, followed by it’s year-old brother, the Note 4. We imagine that it’s European readers hitting the heart button on the Note 4 in the absence of the next-gen model on their shelves.

Anyways, the Xperia Z3 is fifth by number of new recruitments this month, ahead of the Galaxy S6. Some fan love spills over the LG G4 too, followed by yet another Xperia, the plain Z5. Motorola’s flagship Moto X Style and the iPhone 6s complete the list of flagships, disturbed by one “flagship killer”.

Leaked presentation confirm Nexus 6P design, specs, and colors

We have seen some pretty detailed leaks regarding the two new Nexus devices in this week that showcased both the front and back design in some fancy press images.

Now, a leaked presentation has surfaced, which goes further and confirms the design and specs of the bigger 6P, along with the four colors it will be sold in. The presentation was designed for internal training purposes.

First the specs. The slides confirm the Nexus 6P will have a 5.7-inch 2560×1440 resolution display (no confirmation on display tech), metal body, Snapdragon 810 v2.1, 3450mAh battery, 178g weight, front stereo speakers, and USB Type-C connector. The slide also claims faster charging and transfer rates, so Qualcomm Quick Charge might be on board.

The other slides talk about the improved camera, fingerprint sensor on the back, and Android 6.0 Marshmallow out of the box, which brings with it many features, including Doze that saves battery when the phone is not in use, and app permissions.

The Nexus 6P will be available in 32GB, 64GB, and 128GB capacities in aluminum, graphite, frost, and gold color options, with the gold color being exclusive to Japan initially.

Other than that, we get a good look at the design, including the camera bump at the back, which seen from the side isn’t quite severe and only slightly raised. The smaller Nexus 5X also makes an appearance in one of the slides.

Apple iPhone 6s receives an aftermarket Black Gold coating

Sure, we know that this year’s hero color for the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus is Rose Gold. But imagine the millions of people who are going to have one, while what you want the most is some exclusivity.

Well, its Vietnamese company Karalux that comes to the rescue, offering a Black Gold plating service for the iPhone 6s in addition to its more orthodox 24K gold-plating jobs. The color is achieved by mixing gold with rhodium in a specific ratio and rhodium itself is 6 times more expensive than gold, the company’s technical director says.

The time consuming process of covering an iPhone with Black Gold takes 8 hours and as you could have guessed, it’s not exactly cheap. A 64GB iPhone 6s dipped in the rhodium/gold pot will set you back $2,300 (VND 52 million), though you could save a couple of million and get the 16GB version, who are we to judge where your priorities…

YouTube making strides towards October launch of subscription service

Ads-free YouTube might be as little as a month away. Almost precisely a year after the concept of a subscription-based service was first put into official words, Google’s video sharing platform seems to be on the verge of delivering.

Emails have been sent out to content creators, informing them of changes to terms and conditions effective October 22. The choice is to either agree and get on board, or “videos will no longer be available for public display or monetization in the United States”.

“A new ads-free version of YouTube, available to fans for a monthly fee” is also explicitly stated in the emails, leaving little doubt as to the reason behind the changes. Of course that should in no way affect regular unpaid users, we presume, as ads (and, uhm, ad blockers) have long since settled into our lives.

No specific numbers have been uttered as to what the service will cost, but then again the purpose of the email is different. Apparently more will be known come October…

Sony Xperia Z5 up for pre-order in Hong Kong and Singapore

Pre-orders for Sony’s latest flagship Xperia Z5 are steadily covering more markets world-wide, though the smartphone is yet to actually start shipping. The company’s Hong Kong and Singapore stores have now opened pre-orders too, and in Hong Kong you can go ahead and reserve a Z5 Compact as well.

The price for the Xperia Z5 (Z5 Dual, too) in Hong Kong is listed at HKD 5,698 ($735), while the Z5 Compact is expectedly cheaper and goes for HKD 4,798 ($620). The pre-order period ends on October 5, and the phones are scheduled to start shipping on October 7.

Meanwhile in Singapore you can only pre-order the Xperia Z5, and not the Compact. The price is set at SGD 998, which translates to $700. With pre-orders stretching to October 11, shipping will apparently commence a week after Hong Kong. If it’s any consolation though, Sony will be bundling a DK52 microUSB charging dock free of charge.

Meizu m2 note gets a £20 price cut in the UK

If you are in the UK and were eyeing up the Meizu m2 note, now seems to be the time to act. The handset has just gotten a £20 price cut on Amazon and now retails for £120. A minor caveat is that the reduction only applies to the Grey color variant, and the fresher Blue, Pink and White ones are still £140.

For that you’re getting a 5.5-inch FullHD phablet with the smaller 16GB of storage, with microSD expansion though. A Mediatek MT 6753 chipset, 1.3GHz octa-core CPU and 2GB of RAM are on board, together with a 13MP/5MP camera combo. The smartphone supports Cat.4 LTE over bands 1/3/7, meaning it should work on the EE and 3’s networks.
