Samsung Galaxy S7 could be launching in January

According to a new report out of Samsung’s home country of South Korea, the Galaxy S7 will be unveiled in January. Since the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge made their debut on March 1 this year, that means the S7 is going to be announced at least one full month early. This apparently has to do with the competition that Samsung is feeling in the high-end space, especially from Apple and its new iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus.

The rumor goes on to say there will be a premium and a sub-premium version of the Galaxy S7, and that the designs have been finalized already in September. The premium model’s Exynos chipset will reportedly house the processor and the modem on a single chip, while in the sub-premium handset they will be on different dies. The former SoC might be the Exynos M1 we’ve seen benchmarked recently, but that’s not 100% certain – especially as past mumblings had it ready for production only in the second half of next year.

Other previously leaked information talked about there actually being three different chipset variations employed by the Galaxy S7. The phone might also come with 3D Touch-like features, as well as a USB Type-C port.

OnePlus 2 now available invite-free in Malaysia

If you’re in Malaysia and looking to buy a OnePlus 2 smartphone, here is some good news: the device is now available for purchase without invites from local carrier Maxis, which is selling the 64GB model for RM1,788.22 or $420 (including taxes).

It’s worth mentioning that the carrier launched the “2016 flagship killer” just last month on September 22. So, the change in sales strategy comes less than a month after the smartphone went on sale in the country, possibly indicating a lukewarm reception.

Just last week, the device went on open sale in India, too, although for a limited time only. If you aren’t already aware, the Chinese company is expected to unveil a new handset named OnePlus X later this month.

Unofficial Android Marshmallow build for Nexus 7 (2012) now available

While Google won’t be officially rolling out Android 6.0 Marshmallow update for the Nexus 7 (2012), those looking to experience the latest Android version on the tablet will be happy to know that an unofficial Marshmallow build is now available for the device.

The build comes courtesy of Google developer Dmitry Grinberg, who has already released a similar unofficial Marshmallow image for the Nexus 4, another aging Nexus device from 2012 that won’t get the Android 6.0 update.

Reports say the Nexus 7 (2012) with Marshmallow gives a smoother experience than Android 5.1.1. Interested users can head to Grinberg’s website (Source link below) where he has published both build instructions as well as pre-built AOSP Marshmallow images for the device.

Microsoft removes Windows Bridge for Android in latest Windows 10 build

xda-developers members are noting that Microsoft has removed support for Windows Bridge for Android in the latest build of Windows 10 for smartphones. Windows Bridge for Android, otherwise known as Project Astoria, enabled developers to easily port their Android apps to Windows by retaining most of the code, and allowed customers to sideload Android APK files, no longer seems to be working.

Microsoft has seemingly removed the subsystem in the latest 10549 build of Windows 10 for smartphones, even though the subsystem files are still present in the emulator, which runs build 10563.

According to WindowsBlogItalia, the reason for removal is that the Android subsystem was slowly degrading Windows 10…

Huawei Mate 8 leak reveals a beastly specs sheet

Metal unibody, spacious 6.0-inch display, a super fast fingerprint reader and nice 13MP camera, the Huawei Mate7 is definitely a tough device to top. However, the Chinese OEM is definitely trying its best and the Mate 8 does look mightily impressive.

We have already seen a few leaks of the upcoming phablet, some of which even complete with photos. But, information about the already announced Mate S seemed to often get mixed into the leaks. A new source, however, now promises the full scoop on the device and its specs sheet.

As previously thought, the Mate 8 will have a spacious 6.0 inch 1440p display and the OEM’s new custom Kirin 950 chipset. It promises to deliver unprecedented power thanks to a 16nm FinFET production process and a big.LITTLE architecture. The four Cortex-A72 cores are clocked at 2.4 GHz, while the extra four Cortex-A53 ones run at 2.0 GHz and should easily top the Samsung Exynos 7420 and the Qualcomm Snapdragon 810.

The bundled GPU is also pretty impressive – the ARM Mali-T880 and it should also be joined by an i7 coprocessor and a Tensilica Hi-Fi 4 independent audio chip. A promising collection of silicon indeed. The rest of the specs sheet includes 3GB or 4GB of RAM, bundled with 32GB or 64GB of onboard storage, respectively.

A preliminary price tag is also know and it sound very attractive for such a high-end unit: CNY 3,299 ($520) for the 3GB one and CNY 3,899 ($610) for the more powerful one. As for availability the Huawei Mate 8 is still said to arrive before the end of the year, perhaps in late November or early…

Samsung Exynos 7650 and 7880 to combat Snapdragon 620 next year

Samsung switched on its own Exynos line for flagships with a small number of mid-rangers also powered by the Samsung-branded chipsets. Next year that number might grow, weening the Galaxy line off the Snapdragon dependence.

Two chipsets – Exynos 7650 and Exynos 7880 – are roughly in the Snapdragon 620 range. They have a big.LITTLE configuration of Cortex-A72 and Cortex-A53 (the core counts for both is unclear) and Mali-T860 GPU. Both will be built on a 28nm range.

The difference comes from a slight clock speed advantage for the 7880 (and possibly core count, again it’s unclear), an extra core for the GPU (4-core vs. 3-core) and faster RAM access (17GB/s vs. 14.9GB/s).

The Cortex-A72 is based on ARMv8A and is the successor to the A57 used in current designs. It should improve performance and power efficiency, though it’s not clear if the old manufacturing process will allow it to challenge current flagship. The GPU is similarly a new generation – the Galaxy S6 stable uses Mali-T760, but has double the cores.
