Vine now works on the Apple Watch

The latest version of Vine for iOS brings with it support for the Apple Watch, among other things. To enable this, make sure you have Vine 4.4.0, which started rolling out today through the iTunes App Store.

Then, head into the Watch app on your iPhone, find Vine, and choose “Show app on Apple Watch”. From that point on you can see your account’s total loops as well as access Vine straight from the watch face with its complication.

Vine for the Apple Watch lets you view accounts that you’ve favorited, and posts that have lots of views. These are shown through the app’s two tabs, Favorites and Featured, respectively. It’s also possible to revine from your wrist.

Finally, the new version of Vine for iOS lets you swipe left on any post to see more Vines, thanks to the app’s improved recommendation…

New leaked renders show the Huawei Mate 8 from all angles

Although Huawei has unveiled a new Mate device not long ago, the Mate S is interestingly not the Chinese company’s flagship for the end of the year. That honor is going to the upcoming Mate 8, the true successor for last year’s Ascend Mate7.

Previous mumblings have revealed that the Mate 8 will be made official on November 26, which is just two days from now. So, perhaps understandably, a full set of leaked renders of the device has showed up in China today. You can see the images below (click on the thumbnails for bigger versions).

Huawei Mate 8

Given Huawei’s love of metal, it’s really no surprise to see that the Mate 8 employs that material as well. It looks like there will be three color versions of the handset, grey, gold, and copper.

The renders confirm the positioning of the fingerprint sensor underneath the camera, as well as that metal ring around the snapper, and the two speaker grilles surrounding the USB port on the bottom of the phone.

Huawei Mate 8

The screen seems to employ some type of 2.5D glass on top of it, and it’s almost bezelless. That this would be true for its sides isn’t that much of a surprise, but the Mate 8 will have very small top and bottom bezels as well, which means it could rank ahead of its competitors when it comes to the display-to-body ratio.

The smartphone has been rumored to feature Huawei’s new Kirin 950 chipset, which has a CPU that employs four high-performance Cortex-A72 cores and four low-power Cortex-A53 ones. The Mate 8 could also have a 6-inch 1080p touchscreen, a 16 or 20 MP rear camera with dual-LED flash, an 8 MP selfie shooter, 3 or 4GB of RAM and 32 or 64GB of storage (depending on version). The battery capacity might be 4,100 mAh, and the phone will run Android 6.0 Marshmallow with Huawei’s own Emotion UI on…

New ZTE Axon now selling for just $200 in US

The new ZTE Axon, which was announced last month in the US carrying a price tag of $329.98, has received a major price cut in the country – online electronics retailer Newegg is currently selling the device for just $200.

What’s worth mentioning here is that the price cut only comes into effect after you enter a special coupon code during checkout, and that code is EMCKKNR25. Otherwise, you’ll have to pay the complete $329.98 amount.

Amazon also has the device in stock, but there’s no such discount at the moment. ZTE, however, is offering a $50 discount on the handset as part of its Cyber Week deals – the promotion runs through November 30.

Motorola invite suggests Moto 360 (2nd gen) India launch for December 1

Motorola has sent out press invites for an upcoming event scheduled to be held in the Indian capital of New Delhi on December 1. While the star of the event has not been explicitly mentioned in the teaser (see below), there are enough hints for us to conclude that the new Moto 360 is landing in the country next month.

The image of a circular watchface in the middle as well the #MotoTimeHack hashtag at the bottom are enough to give an idea that the company would be launching a smartwatch at the event, and no points for guessing that it would be the Moto 360 2nd Gen, which was unveiled at this year’s IFA back in September.

There is currently no information on what price tag the wearable device – which comes in two sizes for men and one for women – would carry in India. Over in the US, the smartwatch’s cost varies from $299.99 to $429.99, depending on…

EE’s 4G camera lineup just got richer with the tiny Capture Cam

It seems that nowadays everybody and their aunt is on YouTube and a surprising number of those people are creating and uploading content. We won’t be getting into the quality of said content debate, but the important thing is, it is becoming a lucrative affair to provide simpler and more convenient ways for people to record and stream.

EE’s line of 4G connected cameras is definitely one solution. The premise is dead simple – leverage the carrier’s vast network to stream whatever you might desire right to your friend’s screens – I am guessing It’s an advanced level of being “social”. The latest addition to the family in the 4GEE Capture Cam.

It is a smaller and less expensive version of the 4GEE Action Cam and also considerably less rugged and for a good reason – EE’s vision is that it can be something to wear around and capture or even stream every step of the way, literally! The compact rectangular camera has an 8MP sensor and is capable of taking stills within said resolution, as well as 1080p video at 30 fps. It even comes with a clip on the back to snap on to your clothes.

But the best part is presumably the live streaming. It is done through the company’s own Skeegle app which offers quite a bit of flexibility. The Capture Cam itself actually has its own connection to the EE network with a data plan. It is also worth noting that streaming is done in 720p at 30fps and that the camera is perfectly usable in offline mode as well, through the dedicated Capture Cam app on Android or iOS.

The Capture Cam can be picked up for £10 per month if you already have a preexisting EE contract, which will give you 1GB of data for streaming. £15 get you 2GB and there are also options to add the Capture Cam to a Shared Plan, which means it will tap into your general contract data pool.

Newcomers to the EE network will have to pay another £10 up front for a new contract and if you don’t want to deal with payment plans – the 4GEE Capture Cam goes for £130 with 2GB of data, £150 for 6GB or £200 for 24GB.

GSMArena Labs: Updating the Photo and Video quality comparison tool

We have updated our Photo and Video quality comparison tools with a new setup and a bit of extra functionality. Those two were launched five years ago, but given the improvement smartphone cameras have achieved since, we felt it’s about time for an update.

For one, over the years our color charts started to fade (they were losing color so we had to swap them). Also, smartphone cameras became so good they surpassed the limits of the print in those two (they were printed at a certain DPI, it turns out it was too low for a modern high-end camera).

So we added a new setup to the testing procedure, you’ll find it in the comparison tools as “Studio setup.” It is located in a photo studio, where the sun won’t damage it for years, and it’s made up of physical objects with very fine texture. As cameras continue to get better, they will resolve more detail in the objects, but they will never hit an upper limit (there’s no DPI here, just real detail).

We’ve already started re-building the database with phones available in the office and we’ll add more as time goes on. If you’re interested in a phone that hasn’t been updated with the new setup, you can view the old charts by clicking the gray buttons on the right (the ones marked “old”).

You may notice that the Scaling option has changed – we replaced the clunky dropdown menu with a slider. This feels more familiar (it’s like the zoom slider on your camera) and it’s now available in the Video comparison tool. Back in 2010 we didn’t think we needed it, but these days cameras shoot videos with over 8MP per frame!

The Xiaomi Mi Pad 2 will also have a Windows 10 version

Xiaomi unveiled a couple of interesting devices today – the Redmi Note 3 handset and Mi Pad 2 tablet. Both Android gadgets come with impressive specs sheets for their price points and cool design. And if that wasn’t enough, it seems Xiaomi intends to make the most out of the impressive Pad 2 hardware by offering it in a Windows 10 version as well.

The cutting-edge 14nm Intel Atom X5-Z8500 64-bit processor is more than capable of handling Microsoft’s latest OS with all its bells and whistles and has the proper x86 architecture to run a conventional PC OS, so it was a matter of time before the modding community took advantage of the hardware anyway. But, providing the option on an OEM level is definitely a better deal for end users, as they can expect proper drivers and optimization. Plus, with a screen size of 7.9 inches, the Mi Pad 2 still qualifies for a free Windows 10 license.

The OS might be free, but Xiaomi development and support is still costly for the company, so we can be grateful for the OS choice. Furthermore, the Windows-powered version will come at no extra cost, but will, be available only on the higher-tier 64GB storage option at RMB 1299 ($203).

For that modest price you get a 7.9-inch 2048×1536 resolution display, 2GB RAM, 8 megapixel camera on the back and 5 megapixels on the front, and a smaller 6190mAh battery, compared to the 6700mAh on the previous model. There is also Wi-Fi 802.11ac and the new Type-C connector, all inside a thinner 6.95mm aluminum body, weighing in at 322g.

As scheduled, Chinese manufacturer Gionee has launched its Marathon M5 smartphone in India, making it the first market outside of China where the device is now available. The handset went official in China back in June this year.

As you might already know, the Marathon M5’s selling point is its dual-battery setup – it includes two 3,010mAh batteries providing a total capacity of 6,020mAh, enough to keep the phone running for up to 4 days, the company claims.

In addition, the device also features an extreme mode that Gionee says boosts standby time to 62 hours when there’s only 5% battery left. The handset also supports reverse charging, meaning it can also be used as a power bank to charge other devices.

As far as other specs go, the device is powered by a MediaTek MT6735 SoC with quad-core 1.5GHz CPU, and sports a 5.5 inch AMOLED display with 720 x 1280 pixel resolution. The model launched in India comes with 3GB/32GB memory configuration, compared to the 2GB/16GB variant available in China.

2018 iPhone might have a Samsung-made OLED panel

This is one of those rumors that has been around for so long that we rarely tend to pay any attention to it. Of course, we are talking about Apple’s move away from LCD technology, which year after year seems to be just around the corner and yet still not quite within reach.

That’s why we are hesitant to report on the endless speculations on the matter, but this time around things look to be a little different. This new batch of info comes from an executive at Samsung Display, who claims that future iPhones are likely to use Samsung-made OLED panels:

Samsung Display has recently renewed talks with Apple to supply its small-sized OLED displays for the next iPhones to be released in a few years, which I believe is around 2018.

This definitely gives the story a lot more credibility and so does the provided reasoning for such a step. According to the executive, this move is part of a larger strategic plan to diversify Samsung Display’s portfolio and client base, which is currently mostly limited to Samsung Electronics:

Samsung Display-manufactured OLED displays have so far been used in all Galaxy flagship smartphones. But demand for handsets will remain weak as time goes by because the handset industry will be reshaped further. Samsung Display needs to have a long-term contract with new and trustworthy major customers for OLED displays.

From this standpoint it definitely makes sense for the company to try and sell panels to a broader client base and the process has already begun with a few Chinese EOMs. But Cupertino is definitely the golden ticket to a stable expansion:

If Samsung starts to ship OLEDs for new Apple iPhones, then this will be huge.

As always, however, there is a flip side to the matter and it offers a lot in defense of LCD panels. For one things, they are undoubtedly easier and cheaper to manufacture and a many industry sources believe that Apple will continue to improve and use them for as long as it can, to keep profit margins up. This is also the hope of LG Display, which is currently the major supplier of iPhone panels.

Still, there is no denying that if current market trends keep up, the Cupertino giant will be forced to move away from LCD’s just to stay relevant, whether or not it is the best economical decision. If business dictates it, then it will happen and will most-likely bring about a major clash between LG and Samsung for dominance in the display realm.
