Which brings me to PointCast, the Internet darling of 20 years ago. It was going to revolutionize online news with technology to “push” content to consumers so they didn’t have to “pull” it through browsers. Early adopters needed to download a screensaver to personalize their information flow. Rumors had Rupert Murdoch, “groping for an online strategy” (sound familiar), shelling out $450 million to buy the young company. Consumers didn’t bite. The hype faded. PointCast withered away, forced into a $7 million deal with Bill Gross, the legendary entrepreneur and venture capitalist.
