Cavium Steps Up The ARM Race

Today Cavium. announced the second generation of their ARM Holdings CPU targeted at the enterprise server market. The new chip, the Thunder X2 is expected to be available in the second half of 2017 and appears to be one of the best design specs that has been disclosed. (There is this small matter of executing to the plan that is required.) It is the follow-on to their Thunder X CPU that began sampling early 2015 and was released for production later last year. Thunder X2 is a 14nm FinFET design fabricated by TSMC, and the company claims it will deliver 2 to 3 times the performance of Thunder X on select workloads with a higher performance to power ratio. Their plan for the X2 is to include 54 ARMv8.2 cores with a target frequency of 2.4 to 2.8 GHz and up to 3 GHz in turbo mode (versus their current 28nm, 48 core, 2.5GHz design), 32MB of what Cavium calls shared Last Level Cache (LLC), 6 DDR4 memory interfaces running at 3200MHz (1 DPC) or 2966MHz (2 DPC), multiple 10/25/40/100 Gb/s Ethernet (KR) interfaces, enhanced virtualization support (including IO), ARM Trustzone security and a variety of hardware accelerators. In fact, Cavium’s best opportunity to make an impact in the enterprise space is through these accelerators and a laser focus at providing undeniable value propositions.

ARM lanza una nueva CPU y GPU para potenciar la realidad virtual en los dispositivos móviles

Con la presentación de DayDream para Android que llegará con la nueva versión, los nuevos dispositivos deberán de tener ciertas características en el hardware para potenciar el uso de la realidad virtual. Samsung, HTC, LG, Xiaomi y otras tantas más están ya preparando terminales que ofrecerán la compatibilidad apropiada a esta gran novedad por parte de Google en Android.

ARM también se está sumando a la fiesta de la realidad virtual y ha anunciado el chip Cortex-A73 y el chip gráfico Mali-G71 en Computex 2016. Ambos chips estarán disponibles el próximo año con especificaciones que ofrecen soporte a la realidad virtual. Dos chips que serán más potentes que sus anteriores predecesores, pero que a la vez tendrán una mejor eficiencia energética que repercutirá en una mejor autonomía en la batería.

Son varios los fabricantes de chips, como son MediaTek, HiSilicon de Huawei, Marvell y otros siete más, los que ya tienen la licencia de los nuevos chips desde ARM y han empezado a probarlos. Supuestamente a principio del año que viene será cuando comencemos a ver dispositivos móviles con Cortex-A73 y Mali-G71.

Por lo que respecta a las propiedades de estos dos chips, el Cortex-A73 es un 30% más rápido que el A72 y está fabricado usando los 10nm con FinFET. Esto significa que el chip mide menos que los .65 mm. El Mali-G71 ofrecerá soporte a resolución 4K con un índice de refresco de 120Hz. Lo que es un 33 por ciento sobre el ratio de refresco mínimo de 90Hz necesitado para la realidad virtual. El chip gráfico se encarga de actualizar la pantalla 120 frames por segundo.

Este chip gráfico Mali-G71 es 50 por ciento más rápido y un 20% más eficiente que el anterior Mali-T880. Tiene una latencia de 4ms y tiene 32 shader cores, lo que indica que se podrá visualizar imágenes más nítidas desde un teléfono.

Update brings ‘Tell Me’ feature to Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint on Android

Microsoft has updated its Word, Excel, and PowerPoint apps on Android with a new feature. Dubbed Tell Me, the functionality helps you find what you’re looking for – it could be a feature of the application or any action that you want to perform.

It’s worth mentioning that Tell Me isn’t exactly a new feature (it’s been part of Office Online for a couple of years), just that the Android apps are getting it now. You can use it by tapping the light bulb icon in the upper right corner.
