How Do You Become A Meteorologist?
How do you become a meteorologist anyway? As the director of an Atmospheric Sciences Program at a major University and former president of the American Meteorological Society (AMS), I get this question a lot. First, it is important to remember there are many different kinds of meteorologists (see here) although the public seems most familiar with their TV meteorologists (less than 10% of the profession). Next, let’s define meteorologist. The AMS was asked several years ago by employers and stakeholder to define it because there was confusion about the ethics of who should use the term. An AMS Professional Guideline statement defines a meteorologist as,
an individual with specialized education who uses scientific principles to explain, understand, observe or forecast the earth’s atmospheric phenomena and/or how the atmosphere affects the earth and life on the planet. This specialized education would be a bachelor’s or higher degree in meteorology, or atmospheric science.
