¿La pantalla inteligente es muy pequeña para tus dedos? Puedes hacerla más grande… al convertir tu brazo en un touchpad.
Los investigadores de Future Interfaces Group de la Universidad Carnegie Mellon inventaron una nueva tecnología que convierte la piel en un sensor táctil.
“Los pequeños dispositivos wearables –como los relojes inteligentes y la joyería digital– se están haciendo viables rápidamente como plataformas de cómputo… sin embargo, su pequeño tamaño limita severamente la experiencia del usuario”, escribieron los investigadores.
El grupo quiere resolver el problema de las pantallas diminutas al extenderlas hacia la piel. Su dispositivo, llamado Skintrack, tiene dos componentes: un anillo que emite señales y una banda de muñeca con sensores. Usa electrodos situados en la banda para monitorear los movimientos del dedo que porta el anillo.
Cuando el dedo toca la piel, manda una señal eléctrica de alta frecuencia al brazo del usuario. El dispositivo usa el cuerpo humano como un conducto eléctrico. Eso podría sonar un poco atemorizante, pero es seguro y ya se usa en otras áreas, incluyendo tecnología médica.
Cuando se mueve el dedo cerca de la piel, el sistema calcula su posición con base en la distancia de los electrodos. La tecnología funciona incluso a través de una capa de ropa.
Skintrack reconoce todas las señales típicas de las pantallas touch, incluyendo tocar, deslizar y gestos espaciales. En el video de demostración, los investigadores muestran cómo dibujar una “N” en la muñeca lanza la app de noticias, mientras que una “S” pone en silencio una llamada.
Los investigadores dicen que una vez que los usuarios lo entienden, el sistema puede llegar a tener una certeza igual a las pantallas táctiles.
“Nuestro método es compacto, no invasivo, de bajo costo y de bajo consumo”, dijo el grupo. “Imaginamos que la tecnología se integre a futuros relojes inteligentes, apoyando interacciones touch entre las estricciones de las pequeñas pantallas touch”.
