OpenStack Grows Up: Observations From The OpenStack Summit

They came, they saw, they conquered. Six years ago it was 75 attendees and a bunch of servers in a pickup truck (this is Texas after all). This year, 7,500 descended on my adopted city to revel in the fact that OpenStack is finally growing up. For those of you not in the know, OpenStack is an open source alternative to public cloud offerings like Amazon Web Services (AWS) or hosted virtualization from VMware. OpenStack supporters view it as a way to get the agility of AWS without having to move your applications (and more importantly your data) outside of a datacenter that you own and control. Judging from the event this week, the momentum is definitely on OpenStack’s side, and we’ll be hearing more about this in the future. Not only from the tech world, but soon from the business people as well. You’ve been asking for OpenStack for years, you just didn’t realize it. Follow along and you’ll see.

How eBay Is Working To Expand Its Seller Base?

Recently, eBay announced a strategic relationship with BigCommerce that allows the latter’s merchants to seamlessly list their products and manage their inventory on the eBay marketplace. The partnership will give the merchants of BigCommerce access to eBay’s 162 million active buyers and increase the selection of products available on eBay’s marketplace. While this relationship promotes a multi-channel seamless online selling environment for merchants, it can significantly expand eBay’s seller base and enhance its portfolio of products. We believe that, as eBay works on its turnaround plant, this relationship should add positively to its transaction volume. As more small merchants use its platform for their products, it should attract more buyers and drive revenues for the company in future.

WhatsApp working on native Windows and Mac apps

After launching WhatsApp on web, the company may be working on native apps for Windows and Mac.

Twitter account WABetaInfo found screenshots of WhatsApp translation website where you can see references to download links for Windows and Mac applications.

You can see these screenshots. #WhatsApp #Mac #Windows #NativeClient #iOS #Android #WP #Blackberry #Symbian #Nokia http://pic.twitter.com/AKja58zf5C— WABetaInfo (@WABetaInfo) April 29, 2016

It’s not clear why WhatsApp would want to invest in developing native apps when it already has a web client, which is easier to develop, can be updated…

JP Morgan Chase CIO Turned First Data President Guy Chiarello Reflects On His Rise

Guy Chiarello has been a towering figure at the intersection between financial services and technology for multiple decades. He foresaw the power of digital business as Chief Information Officer of JP Morgan Chase before digital was the term of art or a department within corporations. He and his team there were responsible for the award-winning Chase Mobile App Suite, which grew its customer base to more than 10 million users in its first two years. He was also among the first to usher in peer-to-peer payments at scale. Perhaps most critical to his success, at a remarkably early period, he understood the power of pushing his businesses to think of IT as a source of innovation, and he ensured that he recruited the kinds of people who could deliver on that promise.
