Samsung confirms Galaxy S7 edge, wide and narrow edge features will be supported

Either a genuine mistake, or part of the pre-launch teasing process (our money is on the latter), a Samsung website now lists the Galaxy S7 Edge in a table detailing the different uses of the curved screen. Keeping the Galaxy S6 edge and S6 edge+ company, the yet-to-be-released model (announcement confirmed for February 21) will be able to do the exact same stuff as its older brethren.

With the screen on, the trio can display either the narrow type strips available since the S6 edge’s inception, or the wide one-third of the screen type introduced with the Marshmallow update. With the screen off it’s the usual clock and notifications feed.

And if we were hoping to get something else out of the slip-up, like the name for example, tough luck – it’s a bit of a naming mess. The existing Galaxy S6 edge is officially spelled with a small ‘e’, and the S6 edge+ formally gets a symbol instead of a ‘Plus’. So that remains to be settled, for those that care.

NVIDIA pulls Android 6.0 update for SHIELD Tablet due to potential WiFi issue

I’m sure many of you were pretty excited yesterday to hear that the Android 6.0 update for your beloved SHIELD Tablet was finally going to be hitting your device and delivering all of that Marshmallowy goodness. If you are like me, you probably found yourself checking for the update a few times throughout the day, and at one point I did actually get the notification that the OTA was there, but when I tapped it there was nothing there.

As it turns out, I’m probably lucky that I happened to miss my window of opportunity to download the Android 6.0 update, because some users are reporting that they are completely losing Wi-Fi connectivity following the update. For those of us that have WiFi-only SHIELD Tablets, that falls into what I would call the “catastrophic error” category.

If you never received the update, you are going to need to sit tight and wait for NVIDIA to clear up this matter and roll out a new update. To be clear, this only affects the update for the original SHIELD Tablet; the update for the SHIELD Tablet K1 is problem-free.

Samsung looking to unveil 360-degree camera alongside Galaxy S7

Samsung’s Project Beyond 360-degree camera made its first appearance in November of 2014 at the company’s developer conference. This was following the announcement of Gear VR, but still a month prior to the release of the original “Innovator Edition.” The camera was designed stream or record 360-degree 3D footage that could then be viewed by someone with Gear VR.

While the Gear VR saw a consumer launch in November 2015, Project Beyond has stayed behind the scenes. Those that got a chance to test Project Beyond when it was announced indicated that while the experience was impressive, it was lacking in a few areas with a relatively low-resolution capture and no audio.

According to SamMobile, Project Beyond is finally ready to join Gear VR as a consumer product and will be unveiled with the Galaxy S7 at Mobile World Congress later this month as the Gear 360.

The camera is reportedly a standalone device, but will pair with a smartphone over Bluetooth via a Gear 360 Connect app and seemingly requires the smartphone in order to control any of the shooting settings. The video can be streamed directly to a smartphone and, while there is no confirmation that it can stream directly to a smartphone paired with Gear VR, it would certainly stand to reason that this functionality will be included.

There’s no word on pricing for the Gear 360, but it’s probably safe to say this is going to be an lower entry point for capturing 360 video than the $15,000 GoPro Odyssey VR. Samsung is doing an excellent job capturing this mid-range VR market with performance that dramatically eclipses what is possible with Google Cardboard, but at a price point that is far more palatable than the high-end VR from Oculus, HTC and presumably Playstation.

Assuming these sources are correct, we only have a few weeks to wait until we’ll get to see how far Project Beyond has come since November of 2014 and learn if it’s a product that deliver useful VR capture to the masses.

Samsung Galaxy Tab E 7.0 gets FCC approval

Earlier today, a slew of new tablet offers was spotted on a US-based retailer website, suggesting they are heading toward a release. The devices in question include the Galaxy Tab E 7.0, Tab E 8.0, Tab E Lite and Tab E Lite Kids. After the 8-inch one already obtained an FCC certificate, now it is the smaller Tab E 7.0’s turn.

According to the document, the tablet will have a 7-inch display, which in case the name wasn’t clear about it. The actual model number listed for the device is either SM-T280 or its alternative version SM-T285 and its exact dimensions are 186mm x 117mm x 180mm with a non-removable battery. Other info, shared with FCC is scarce and only includes mentions of Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, both quite expected.

Luckily, another recent leak provides some more insight on the hardware of the Galaxy Tab 7.0, or at least the SM-T285, said to be the network-enabled one with 4G. It will be powered by a 1.3GHz Spreadtrum SC8830 chipset with a Mali-400 MP2 GPU, and have a resolution of 1280×800 pixels. There will be 1.5GB of RAM and 8GB of expandable internal memory. It will have two cameras – a 5MP main one and a 0.3MP one on the front.

MediaTek Helio X20 allegedly plagued by overheating issues

Remember the Snapdragon 810? If you do, chances are that you associate it with the infamous overheating issues. That reputation has plagued the chip almost constantly throughout its lifecycle and it was the major reason behind Samsung’s decision to skip using the SoC on its Galaxy S6 line. Now, in an unfortunate twist of faith, industry sources have begun accusing the upcoming MediaTek Helio X20 of the same kind of thermomanagement issues.

Naturally this is yet to be confirmed by any official source, so don’t take this too seriously. That being said, the report claims that the issues with the Helio X20 is present and was enough to deter Xiaomi, HTC and Lenovo and make them cancel their Helio X20 smartphones.

If you don’t remember the Helio X20 and what is so special about it, it is officially the first 10-core mobile SoC. It uses an innovative tri-cluster design, which is a first in the smartphone realm as well.

For MediaTek’s sake, we sincerely hope the rumors get debunked and soon, before we have a repeat of the unfortunate Snapdragon 810.

El Samsung Galaxy S7 edge contará con nuevas funciones en los laterales

Ayer desvelábamos el posible aspecto final de los Samsung Galaxy S7, que como ya sabemos se presentarán el 21 de febrero durante el MWC. Hasta ahora sólo habíamos tenido pruebas circunstanciales de que para esas fechas la firma coreana podría anunciar una versión de su flagship con una pantalla flexible y curvada en los bordes, igual que los Samsung Galaxy S6 y S6 edge.

De hecho, los rumores acerca de este posible terminal apuntaban a que tendría el mismo chipset y cámara que el Samsung Galaxy S7 “normal”, pero contaría con una pantalla de 5,5 pulgadas y una batería de unos 3.600 mAh, sensiblemente mayor que la del S7 corriente, que se sitúa en torno a los 3.000 mAh.

Hoy mismo hemos sabido gracias a PhoneArena que Samsung ha listado el Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge en su web. La mención aparece en la sección de desarrolladores de la página de Samsung Mobile, donde explica cómo usar el Look SDK específico para crear aplicaciones para los métodos de entrada poco ortodoxos que la empresa aplica a su línea edge, así como para el S Pen de los Galaxy Note.

Y las nuevas funciones de la pantalla son…

En esa página dedicada a desarrolladores, Samsung habla acerca de las formas de colocar información en la pantalla de los edge al menos en dos variantes: Edge Single y Edge Single Plus. La información se colocaría en un overlay, que puede mostrar mucha más información cuando sacas la pesaña lateral. La descripción dice que las nuevas apps desarrolladas con este SDK tendrán soporte en las versiones de Marshmallow, según parece.

Dicho esto, la opción Edge Single Plus parece que se puede usar de tres formas distintas: acceso rápido, vista rápida y tipos de control rápidos. Según se recoge, ayer se filtró que el Samsung Galaxy S7 edge tendría nuevas aplicaciones y características que se podrían lanzar desde los bordes de la pantalla, aunque no se especificó cuáles.
