Xiaomi MIUI 7.1 to roll out starting tomorrow

Just over a couple of months after the MIUI 7 started rolling out, Xiaomi has announced that the latest iteration of its mobile OS – MIUI 7.1 – will begin hitting supported devices starting January 5.

Both global as well as China stable build will roll out tomorrow. Devices that will get the former include the Mi 3, Mi 4, Mi Note, Mi 4i, Redmi Note 4G, Redmi 2/Prime, Redmi 1S, Redmi Note Prime, Redmi Note 2, Redmi Note 3G, and Mi Pad, while those getting the latter include Mi 3, Mi 4 3G/4G, Mi Note, Mi Note Pro, Mi 4c, Mi 4i, Redmi 1S, Redmi Note 3G, Redmi Note 4G Single SIM/Dual-SIM, and Mi Pad 1/2.

However, some devices including the Mi 2/2S, Redmi 2, Redmi Note 2, and Redmi Note 3 will receive the China stable build later, although no specific time frame was mentioned. Full change-log and download links will only be made available…

Samsung puts the Galaxy A9 on sale in China for nearly $500

Samsung has spent some time experimenting with its A series of devices, and this week will bring some big announcements in regards to the line. Today, Samsung is releasing the highest-end model, the Galaxy A9, in China for CNY 3,199, or roughly $490 USD. That price is a bit higher than expected, considering the A series is designed to target mid-range markets.

What does the Samsung Galaxy A9 bring to the table? Well, for that money you can get a 6-inch 1080p AMOLED display, 3GB of RAM, a 4,000mAh battery, 13-megapixel rear camera, 8-megapixel front-facing camera, fingerprint scanner and a high-quality build that utilizes metal for strength. As an added bonus, it’s also about to receive an update to Android 6.0 Marshmallow, bringing it up to date in the software department.

A major part of the significance here is that Samsung is expected to announce US availability of the new Galaxy A series tomorrow at its CES event. While the Galaxy A series is designed to be mid-range, a price near $500 would likely alienate many mid-range US customers, while not quite snagging the high-end customers.

Altec Lansing announces truly wireless Freedom Earbuds

Much like wireless charging, there is usually a big caveat to wireless earbuds that there is in fact a wire connecting the two earbuds. While this is hardly a deal breaker, there are definitely some advantages to being truly wireless and today Altec Lansing has taken the wraps off the Freedom Earbuds that offer that truly wireless experience.

Each earbud offers six-hours of battery life and the included carrying case offers a three-hour additional charge. The earbuds can be used in stereo or independently if mono is all you need at the moment. The case uses a standard USB port, so it can be used to charge other devices if you wish.

The Freedom Earbuds are IPX7-rated waterproof, which means they are ready to join you for a workout, but not for a swim. Conveniently for keeping your phone stored away while using the earbuds they have track navigation and call answer/hang up buttons on board.

Altec Lansing has also included a feature that I would have considered killing for a few times with my Moto Hint and that is the ability to track the earbuds down using the Bluetooth connection and the free companion app. The app is also used to link the earbuds for stereo performance and to switch between multiple paired devices.

The Freedom Earbuds will be available in Q2 of this year for $149.99 and come in 9 different colors.

Calamares 2.0 ya está disponible y con video de presentación

Parece ser que el desarrollo de Manjaro y de sus programas no para. Si no hace mucho conocimos los nuevos sabores de Capella. Hoy hemos conocido como el creador de la distribución, Philip Müller, presentaba otro de sus proyectos: Calamares 2.0.

Calamares 2.0 es un instalador gráfico que se utiliza en Manjaro y también en otras distribuciones y que recientemente hemos conocido su beta 2, una beta que presenta las novedades definitivas del programa.  En esta versión Calamares 2.0 tendrá ocho pantallas para proceder a la instalación. Las pantallas del instalador son simples y al final aparecerá una pantalla resumen con todas las opciones que se aplicarán, al igual que ocurre en el instalador Anaconda.

Además esta nueva versión de Calamares arregla las incompatibilidades que tenía con algunas particiones y con las nuevas BIOS, algo que facilita aún más la instalación de la distribución y las tareas de Calamares. Philip Müller ha querido ser más pomposo y si bien no ha creado un gran evento con presentación oficial, si que ha publicado un video de cinco minutos de duración donde presenta las novedades de Calamares 2.0.

Este nuevo instalador no se utiliza aún en Manjaro u otras distribuciones ya que aún no es estable, pero el hecho de ser Beta 2 significa que ya está listo para que desarrolladores y jefes de proyectos comiencen a trastear con él y decidan implantarlo en sus distribuciones. Posiblemente la próxima versión de Manjaro lo tenga ya, aunque es algo que no podemos confirmar.

Además de Calamares, existen otros tipos de instaladores que facilitan la instalación de la distribución. Los más populares son Anaconda y Ubiquity, sin embargo existen otros tan funcionales o más que estos como Debian-Installer. En cualquier caso podemos decir que durante el 2016, el usuario de Manjaro lo va a tener más fácil para instalar su distribución preferida.
