Oculus Rift to go on pre-order January 6

Oculus has announced that pre-orders for its Rift virtual reality headset will go live starting Wednesday (January 6) at 8am Pacific Time. This comes just days after the company said that the device will be up for pre-orders “very soon.”

Oculus, however, didn’t reveal the price of the headset. Also, everything you need to know to order the device will only be shared when pre-orders go live, the company said.

If you aren’t already aware, the Rift will come bundled with Lucky’s Tale by Playful, and those pre-ordering the headset will also receive CCP’s EVE: Valkyrie for free.

Finaly, it was also revealed that Oculus founder Palmer Luckey will be doing a Reddit AMA this Wednesday at 6pm Pacific Time. So, be prepared with your questions in case you have…

LG K7, K10 ‘mass-tier’ smartphones announced with 2.5D Arc Glass

LG hasn’t announced a successor to the LG G Flex 2 (yet), but the company has unveiled two new K-series devices at CES which the company hopes will give them better penetration within the “mass-tier” market. Both the LG K10 and LG K7 sport LG’s new 2.5D “barrowed from nature” pebble design, featuring 2.5D Arc Glass, curved edges, woven pattern polycarbonate back panel and rear mounted power and volume buttons. 

LG will be releasing multiple variations of each, but the LTE equipped LG K10 will be the best equipped of them all with a 5.3-inch 720p display, 1.14 GHz octa-core processor, 13 megapixel main camera, 8 megapixel front-facing camera, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage and a 2,300 mAh battery. The lower-end LG K7 will also come in LTE and 3G variations with specs topping out with a 5.0-inch FWVGA display, 1.1GHz quad-core processor, 1.5GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage, and a 2,125mAh battery.

LG has not released pricing or availability details for the LG K7 and LG K10, but we will likely see both devices show up in global markets in the first quarter of this year at quite reasonable prices.

New products are proudly on display, many to disappear over the subsequent months, some to be embraced by early adopters and then the general public.

SystemRescueCD 4.7.0 disponible

SystemRescueCD es un proyecto creado hace tiempo por Francois Dupoux y que tiene como objetivo ofrecer una distro de GNU/Linux capaz de ayudar en el rescate y la solución de problemas de inicio o de acceso a equipos tanto de 32 como de 64 bits. Una herramienta que sigue evolucionando con la llegada de SystemRescueCD 4.7.0, que sucedió hace pocas horas.

Esta nueva versión abandona el kernel 3.14.x que durante mucho tiempo fue su base, para pasar al kernel de Linux 3.18.25 LTS (Long Term Support) aunque también ofrece la versión 4.1.15, asimismo otra de las que cuenta con el soporte extendido.

Respecto a los demás componentes, esta distro de rescate ofrece el escritorio Xfce 4.12 como el utilizado por defecto (aquí no han habido cambios respecto al anterior lanzamiento) mientras que se ha actualizado el servidor gráfico X.Org a la versión 117.4. Otras actualizaciones que llegan en esta versión son las de btrfs-progs a versión 4.3.1, openRC (el sistema de inicio) a la versión 0.18.4 o la de partclone a la versión 0.2.80 entre algunas de las más importantes.

Por lo demás, esta herramienta basada en Gentoo sigue ofreciendo la misma fortaleza y simpleza de uso que le caracterizan, aspectos que han contribuído a convertirla en una de las más preciadas por parte de los usuarios tanto novatos como más avanzados. Y es que sigue siendo simple de utilizar pero ofrece a su vez un funcionamiento potente y avanzado cuando se lo requiere.

SystemRescueCD 4.7.0 es, pues, un nuevo peldaño de esta distro, y aunque no ofrece una gran cantidad de novedades eso no sorprende a nadie puesto que así ha sido siempre la evolución de esta navaja suiza del mundo libre: actualizaciones pequeñas y únicamente esenciales, con el objetivo de mantener siempre la solidez y estabilidad que le han caracterizado desde su mismo comienzo.

LG anuncia la serie K de smartphones asequibles en el CES 2016

LG, al igual que otros como Samsung, están dándose cuenta de que ya no son todos los usuarios que prefieren los gama alta y con uno entre los 150-300€ se conforman perfectamente para tener una serie de prestaciones básicas con las que pueden realizar todos sus quehaceres digitales diarios. Unos teléfonos con una pantalla que cumpla, una cámara que realice buenas fotografías sin ir más allá y lo que sería poder pasar entre distintas apps gracias a una memoria RAM y una CPU que realiza el cometido sobradamente.

Por esto mismo, el gigante surcoreano de la tecnología está lanzando una nueva serie K de teléfonos que están buscando el objetivo en los más jóvenes y en ese público que se ha cansado de los gama alta, pero que quieren tener un diseño premium más alguna que otra característica notable. Los dos teléfonos que inauguran esta serie son el K10 y el K7. Cada uno lanzará dos variantes, una con LTE y la otra con 3G con unas especificaciones menores. Estos teléfonos contarán con un propio lenguaje en el diseño para ir a la par de todos esos smartphones chinos que llegan desde Xiaomi o Huawei que, aparte de tener un gran equilibrio en lo que es el hardware y el precio, constan con un diseño de gran acabado y calidad.

Este lenguaje de diseño “Glossy Pebble” consigue ofrecer a estos smartphones un look con un estilo más curvo y un toque más moderno enfocado a una audiencia más joven. Otro de los objetivos llevados a cabo es llevar todos los botones del teléfono a la parte trasera en vez de esos laterales donde solemos encontrarlos en el resto de smartphones de otros fabricantes salvo varias excepciones. Esto también les conviene a los teléfonos de LG para poder usar su nuevo cristal 2.5D Arc para un estilo más uniforme.

La parte trasera de los nuevos smartphones tiene un patrón entrelazado para incrementar el agarre y reducir las caídas que se pudieran producir. Tanto el K10 como el K7 se enfocarán en la creación de contenido de medios, tal como sucede con los gama alta de LG. Esto implica la aparición de “Gesture Shot” que permite realizar una selfie al abrir totalmente la mano para luego realizar el gesto de un puño, para que así el usuario no pierda tiempo en realizar uno de los tipos de fotografías más usadas.

Por lo que respecta a las especificaciones

El K10 será el teléfono de mayor calidad en sus componentes. La versión LTE del dispositivo se caracterizará por una pantalla de 5,3 pulgadas, cámara trasera de 13 MP, cámara frontal de 8 MP para esas selfies, 2 GB de RAM, 16 GB de almacenamiento interno, una batería de 2.300 mAh y unas medidas de 146,6 x 74,8 x 8,8 mm. Este K10 vendrá en blanco, índigo y oro, aunque en lo que no estará acorde de lo esperado será Android 5.1 en vez de Android 6.0 Marshmallow.

El mayor en especificaciones es el LTE que tendrá una pantalla de 5 pulgadas, cámara trasera de 8 MP y una frontal de 5 MP, 1.5GB de memoria RAM, 8 GB de almacenamiento interno, una batería de 2.125 mAh y unas medidas que van a los 143,6 x 72,5 x 8,9 mm. La variante LTE se lanzará únicamente en un color al que se le ha descrito como “Titan”, pero la versión 3G si que contará con tres variaciones como son el blanco, negro y oro. Aquí también se contará con Android 5.1.
