There have been a lot of rumors floating around lately of a planned move to OLED panes for future iPhones. The switch is said to take place in 2018, but when we are talking about production on the iPhone scale, preparations definitely need to already be under way.
In its current state the OLED market has only a few major players that can hope to even come close to the order volumes Cupertino would require, which is why speculations have involved Samsung as a primary supplier. The two giant’s polarized business relationship has also led to some speculations about enlisting Japan Display Inc. for future iPhone display orders, but that seems less likely after a new wave of interesting contracts was unearthed.
No official information has been shared on the subject yet by any of the involved parties, but industry sources claim that a contract between Apple and Samsung has already been signed. We can only imagine the severe non-disclosure clauses such a document may have, but in an effort to bring some more believability to the rumor, leaksters have backed it up with a few numbers.
Allegedly, Samsung is planning to invest $6.64 billion to $7.47 billion in its display business. This would go towards equipment, plant improvements and staff to enable increased production loads. Allegedly, the investment will be broken down into an initial $2.49B to $3.32B this year to ensure the production of 30 000 to 45 000 OLED sheets per month, followed by an additional $4.17 billion in 2017 for another 45 000 sheets monthly.

Qualcomm is a big name in mobile processing, but Samsung is another company that’s done great work in the field. While Samsung has its own Exynos line of processors, it has also formed partnerships with many companies, including Qualcomm. One result of that partnership is that Samsung will be manufacturing Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 820 processor.
The reasoning behind the deal is simple. Samsung recently introduced a new 14nm LPP (low-power-plus) process for creating its processors, which allows for a speed increase of 15% while still improving power efficiency by 15%. As such, Qualcomm is having Samsung create the Snapdragon 820 processor in order to take advantage of those benefits.
The Snapdragon 820 processor is expected to arrive in devices within the first half of 2016. It will be used both in mobile devices as well as IoT (Internet of Things) connected devices.

Históricamente, Toshiba fue el primer fabricante en implementar el lector de huellas dactilares en un teléfono móvil, el Toshiba G500 lanzado ahí por el año 2007. A pesar de que en los meses siguientes fueron lanzadas otras apuestas de diferentes marcas e inclusive un sucesor del G500, dicho componente nunca llegó a brillar por si mismo.
No fue sino hasta el Motorola Atrix 4G, presentado en el CES 2011, cuando el lector de huellas dactilares volvió a aparecer en la escena de los dispositivos móviles y tomó cierta importancia. Sin embargo, con el paso del tiempo y las futuras generaciones de smartphones que se preocupaban por implementar pantallas de mayores dimensiones y resoluciones, así como procesadores con más núcleos, nuevamente cayó en el olvido.
Si bien en el blog tratamos temas enteramente relacionados al sistema operativo móvil de Google, es imperativo hacer mención del iPhone 5S de Apple, pues fue el dispositivo que verdaderamente hizo resurgir el lector de huellas dactilares en la escena móvil. Aunque duela reconocerlo, fue a partir de este evento que los fabricante de terminales Android comenzaron a tomar en serio la integración de este elemento, pero ¿es realmente necesario el lector de huellas?
Como en todo, las opiniones respecto a la adición de este componente en los dispositivos móviles están divididas. Hay quienes afirman que es una característica innecesaria ya que incrementa los precios de los terminales, y si bien la gran mayoría de los dispositivos de las gamas media-alta y alta han comenzado a implementarlos, el uso del mismo está muy limitado.
En el otro extremo se encuentran las personas que ven este componente como una innovación hecha y derecha. Esto debido a que supone un nivel más a la protección de los datos almacenados, o por la simple comodidad que implican al desbloquear los dispositivos con un simple toque de la yema de los dedos.
Evidentemente, cada vertiente tiene sus pros y contras, mismos que no son absolutos sino que se adaptan a todos los entusiastas usuarios del ecosistema Android dependiendo de las necesidades, gustos y posibilidades de cada uno. Vamos a hacer un repaso de las que podríamos considerar las razones más importantes para incorporar el lector de huellas en los smartphones, así como la réplica correspondiente.
Este es el apartado que podría considerarse como el más afectado de manera positiva, ya que el lector de huellas asegura que nadie podrá acceder a la información en el terminal en caso de robo o pérdida; al menos nadie con los conocimientos necesarios. Diversos estudios han confirmado que no es un método de seguridad 100% infalible, sino que las personas con los conocimientos correctos podrían burlar la autenticación.
Viéndolo desde este ángulo, valdría lo mismo contar con un buen patrón de seguridad para proteger la información del terminal como es debido, en lugar de implementar este componente. En ese sentido, no te pierdas este artículo sobre los patrones de desbloqueo que no debes usar jamás.
Es cierto que es muy cómodo desbloquear el teléfono o autorizar un pago con tan solo un toque de los dedos, sin embargo esto no implica que sea enteramente necesario hacerse con un terminal con esta tecnología. Sobre todo si tenemos en cuenta que los sistemas inalámbricos de pago como Android Pay aún no están del todo difundidos en el globo, más que invariablemente en Estados Unidos y mercados asiáticos, por lo general los de la compañía fabricante, Corea del Sur, por ejemplo.
Durante años, hemos retirado dinero de cajeros automáticos y confirmado compras con tarjetas de débito o crédito con ayuda del siempre confiable NIP, y no le veo problema en que siga siendo de esta manera, al menos hasta la estandarización de estos sistemas de pago.
Como ya mencioné anteriormente, casi por regla general la integración del lector de huellas en los dispositivos se traduce en un aumento considerable de precio, a menos que se trate de un dispositivo chino como el Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 que hemos analizado. Sin embargo cuando se trata de dispositivos proveniente de las grandes fabricantes reconocidas a nivel internacional, la historia es diferente.
Aún con las pocas opciones de uso ¿vale la pena desembolsar cantidades exorbitantes de dinero por esta tecnología?
Teniendo en cuenta todos los argumentos expuestos anteriormente, más muchos otros que cada persona podría tener, pues cada cabeza es un mundo, la decisión claramente varía de persona a persona. Todos tenemos gustos, necesidades y posibilidades monetarias diferentes; de hecho es debido a esto que la escena de dispositivos Android es tan vasta.
