Google Phone and Contacts apps for Android 6.0 Marshmallow are now in the Play Store

Today Google has brought two more of its apps to the Play Store for Android. Contacts and Phone are part of Google’s version of Android, the one it ships on the Nexus line for example. But up until now, in order to issue updates to these apps, the company had to make them part of a new Android software rollout.

That’s no longer the case, now that both Contacts and Phone are to be found in the Play Store, with updates handled in this much more convenient way. And, as a matter of fact, the two apps’ debut in the Play Store coincides with them receiving some new features.

For example, Phone has added call blocking, as well as a slightly enhanced in-call UI. Also, the dialer will display the nickname instead of the name for any contact you have given a nickname to in Google Now. And if your carrier supports Google’s visual voicemail iteration, you’ll get a voicemail count from now on.

The Contacts app comes with “streamlined editing”, which should make changing contact information easier than before.

The Phone and Contacts apps by Google only work with Android 6.0 Marshmallow. For now, devices that have them preinstalled can update them, but it’s unclear whether you can install either of them on a non-Nexus…

Songza is shutting down on January 31

After a long transition period, Songza has announced that it will be shutting down on January 31, 2016, as it completes its merger with Google Play Music. Google purchased Songza in July 2014 and said that no immediate changes were planned for the service. Since that time, Songza’s features have slowly been added to Google Play Music until complete parity of features was reached in June 2015.

Now that all of Songza’s services have been rolled into Google Play Music, the service will shut down for cohesiveness. Songza’s founders are urging users to make the switch and they’ve spoken about the work that they put into getting the transition just right, making sure that no features were lost in the switch.

As of today, Songza is notifying users of the shutdown by email and notifications within the app and website. If you head to the app, you’ll be prompted to migrate your Songza account to Google Play Music, which will save your favorite playlists, recent stations and thumbs-upped songs, making it a seamless transition.

Uber’s new car-rental program for drivers doesn’t actually make much financial sense

Uber’s new car-rental program for drivers doesn’t actually make much financial sense
Uber is testing a new program that will allow drivers in Denver to rent cars for a discounted rate to drive on Uber’s platform. While it matches Uber’s mission to give drivers access to cars, the $210 per week pricetag isn’t cheap.
