Microsoft Monday: Windows 10 Spying Becomes Worse, Gates Invests In Clean Energy, Plans For Older IE

“Microsoft Monday” takes a look back at the past week of news related to Microsoft. This week, “Microsoft Monday” includes details about Windows 10 spying becoming worse, Bill Gates launching a clean energy coalition with more than 20 other billionaires, the release of Cortana beta for iOS, 35,000 traffic cameras added to Bing Maps, the drop in employee gender diversity, plans for the older versions of Internet Explorer and HP signing a major Azure deal. 
Windows 10 Spying Becomes Worse
Earlier this month, Microsoft released the Windows 10 November Update (also known as Threshold 2). The November Update included many useful features like new Skype integrations, improved snapping, the ability to “Find My Device” and Edge password and bookmark syncing features. A problem with Windows 10 is that Microsoft corporate vice president Joe Belfiore admitted that Windows 10 tracks how you are using it and how information is sent back to Microsoft by default. Even though some tracking elements are turned off, Forbes contributor Gordon Kelly pointed out that “core data collection simply cannot be stopped.”
At first it seemed like Microsoft removed the background service that tracks information known as the Diagnostic Tracking Service (DiagTrack). Unfortunately, Microsoft simply renamed DiagTrack to the ‘Connected User Experiences and Telemetry Service.’

T-Mobile Galaxy Note 4 and Note Edge getting Android 5.1.1 update

T-Mobile has started rolling out a new software update to the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 (N910) and Galaxy Note Edge (N915) devices on its network. The update bumps the handsets to Android 5.1.1 and brings a couple of new features including Advanced Messaging and T-Mobile Video Calling.

If you recall, the carrier started rolling out the Video Calling feature back in September this year, making it available to the Samsung Galaxy S6 edge+ and Galaxy Note5 first, followed by the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge. It was promised that more devices will be added to the list by the end of the year, so T-Mobile has made good on the promise.

Aside from the aforementioned two features, the update also brings some security, performance, as well as battery life related improvements. If you are a T-Mobile Note 4 or Note Edge owner, and haven’t received the update yet, you can also manually check for it by heading to your device’s settings.

Sabayon 15.12, una nueva versión con aroma a frambuesa

Sabayon 15.12 LXDEHace unos días hemos recibido como es de costumbre la liberación de una nueva versión de Sabayon, en concreto Sabayon 15.12. Esta nueva versión corresponde a una de las distribuciones que se basan en una de las distribuciones más antiguas que existen en el mundo Gnu/Linux: Gentoo.

Sabayon 15.12 no sólo tiene las últimas actualizaciones de la distribución sino que trae varias novedades interesantes como el advenimiento de la versión de Sabayon para Raspberry Pi 2. Lightdm, el gestor de sesiones, estará ahora usándose en Sabayon 15.12 y posteriores. Lightdm es un gestor de sesiones ligero que usan muchas distribuciones como Ubuntu.

A pesar de que Sabayon 15.12 utiliza kernels estables y muy conocidos, el más actual es el Kernel 4.1, el equipo de Sabayon ha decidido incluir los últimos drivers y modificaciones de las tarjetas gráficas de Nvidia y AMD para su utilización y mejora en uso por parte del sistema.

Ayer se ha lanzado la versión oficial, aunque si tenéis ya Sabayon, sólo os bastará con actualizar el sistema para que los paquetes y las novedades se incluyan. Por otro lado, además se están lanzando imágenes con los principales escritorios y con los gestores de ventanas más famosos que existen, tanto para 32 bits como para 64 bits. Así encontramos una imagen para KDE con Plasma 5, otra imagen con Gnome 3.18, otra con Xfce, otra versión para servidor y la imagen mínima para instalar el sistema Sabayon que queramos.

Sabayon 15.12 ya está aquí y ha sorprendido que en tan sólo un mes de desarrollo se esté hablando de la existencia de una versión para Raspberry Pi, una placa que parece que dará mucho de que hablar los próximos meses. Aunque habrá que esperar unos días más para su descarga. Personalmente me gusta Sabayon 15.12 por su base en Gentoo y su entorno amigable que hace que cualquier usuario intermedio pueda funcionar con Sabayon 15.12.

Teardown of Blackberry Priv shows screen very easy to replace

YouTuber JerryRigEverything has put out a new video. You’ve probably heard of him as he was recently covered all over the smartphone blogs for his Nexus 6P bend test videos.

Anyway, a video of his went live today tearing down the Blackberry Priv. The battery and screen replacements are quite easy to perform. As with any other repair, we don’t recommend you try this if you don’t know what you’re doing.

While we are shown that the battery is easily replaceable, the bigger and better news is that the screen is just as easy to repair, all without even having to disassemble the phone. The YouTuber heated up the edges of the screen and used a business card to break the adhesive all the way around.

The display completely comes off (digitizer and panel assembly) once a ribbon cable near the center of the panel is disconnected. Then, all you need to do is reheat the adhesive (or apply new adhesive), reconnect the ribbon cable, and snap the display back into place. All without having to remove the rear panels, motherboards or other components from the body of the phone.

We can’t wait until the iFixIt team gets its hands on the new Android-powered Blackberry handset and gives it the teardown treatment and repairability…
