US court dismisses $15 billion privacy lawsuit against Facebook

Back in 2012, a class-action lawsuit was slapped against Facebook for breaching user privacy – it was alleged that the company tracked users’ Internet activity even after they log off. That particular lawsuit has now been dismissed.

Passing the verdict, the judge said the plaintiffs failed to explain exactly how they were affected by the tracking, or how it caused them “a realistic economic harm or loss.” He, however, gave them another chance, allowing them to refile their claims in a revised lawsuit.

It’s worth mentioning that the sum of $15 billion was calculated by calling on the Wiretap Act, which – according to the complaint – allows victims (estimated to be around 150 million in this case) to claim damages of as much as $100/violation/day for each Facebook user. Plaintiffs can file the revised lawsuit till November…

October 25, 2015 Leave a comment

As you probably know by now, BlackBerry has officially started accepting pre-orders for its Android-powered Priv smartphone. However, only those living in the US, UK, and Canada can currently pre-order the device.

While there’s no official word on when and if the Priv will be available in other markets, the device has been quietly listed by a couple of Dutch websites (Student Mobile and GSMwijzer), suggesting that it will soon be available in Europe, too.

The listing on both websites reveals a price tag of €799, which translates into around $880. Reports say that the handset will be available in the country starting week 48, which is towards November-end.

October 25, 2015 Leave a comment

Everyone loves a story about a spunky kid who starts their own business from a great idea that’s been around for awhile, and that’s why I really like the story of Mira Modi, an eleven-year-old in New York who is making money by generating and selling cryptographically-safe passwords for two dollars a pop by rolling the dice.

When Google launched the Huawei-made Nexus 6P – alongside the LG-made Nexus 5X – in India a couple of weeks ago, it was said that the device will begin shipping on October 21. However, that never happened, and the company has now confirmed that the handset will land in India in November.

Huawei has said that the smartphone, which is currently up for pre-order on Flipkart, has received an overwhelming response, and will be available in the country starting next month.

“Our supply chain is working on priority to fulfill the demand and the smartphones will be shipped out in batches,” said P. Sanjeev, Vice President Sales, Huawei & Honor India – Consumer Business Group. “The first batch of the smartphone will be available in India starting first week of November. We are working closely with Flipkart and our retail partners on the availability of the smartphones to the Nexus 6P fans.”

If you aren’t already aware, the handset – which has already started shipping in the US – costs INR 39,999 ($615) for the 32GB version or INR 42,999 ($660) for double the…
