IBM’s OpenPOWER: A Lot Has Changed In Two Years

The OpenPOWER consortium was born of IBM’s own volition only two years ago last month. Back then, OpenPOWER was a partnership between five companies, IBM, Google, Mellanox Technologies, NVIDIA and Tyan. Recently, the OpenPOWER Foundation marked their two year anniversary by talking about the growth of the foundation and its membership to 149 members in 22 countries and the broad licensing that has occurred thanks to IBM’s open licensing model. I talked about the OpenPOWER Foundation back in April of last year and the announcement of IBM’s new Power8 processors with their OpenPOWER partners. Since launch and last April’s announcement, OpenPOWER has really come along quite a bit and I wanted to take a 50,000 foot level view at where OpenPOWER started and where IBM and the OpenPOWER Foundation have gone since then.

Salió Debian 8.2

Debido a los numerosos fallos de seguridad de Debian 8.1, éstos se han corregido y se ha lanzado ya la versión 8.2

El proyecto Debian acaba de anunciar el lanzamiento de una nueva versión de su sistema operativo, ha salido Debian GNU/Linux 8.2.

La versión 8.2 es la segunda actualización de la versión 8 de Debian,que tiene el nombre en clave “Jessie”, la cual ha sido lanzada para solucionar todos los problemas que reportaron los usuarios en la versión 8.1, de esta forma se consigue mantener la estabilidad de la distribución.

En cuanto a las novedades, son las siguientes:

  • 61 actualizaciones de seguridad de numerosos paquetes incluidos en la distribución Debian.
  • 68 actualizaciones destinadas a resolver todos los problemas que detectaron usuarios en la versión anterior.
  • 6 paquetes innecesarios han sido eliminados de la distribución.
  • Actualización del instalador de Debian, que ahora soporta los dispositivos Seagate DockStar

Desde el proyecto Debian, se aconseja la actualización inmediata de la versión 8 y de la versión 8.1, debido a que cuanto antes actualicemos, menos estaremos expuestos a las vulnerabilidades de seguridad detectadas en las versiones anteriores de Debian. Para poder hacerlo de manera correcta, debemos acudir a la consola de comandos y con permisos de Root, debemos teclear el comando apt-get dist-upgrade y a continuación el comando apt-get update.

Debian es una distribución que no necesita presentación, Debian GNU/Linux es una de las distribuciones más antiguas que está funcionando y actualizándose desde el siglo pasado. Este sistema se mantiene gracias a una comunidad de usuarios que trabaja día y noche por su mejora y actualización.

Los que quieran probar Debian desde 0, deben primero instalar la versión 8.1, ya que no hay todavía disponible la versión 8.2 de Debian en descarga directa y a continuación procederemos a ejecutar los mismos comandos que hemos puesto en el párrafo anterior.La distribucion Debian 8.1 la descargaremos de la página oficial de Debian en éste link, donde escogeremos la arquitectura de nuestro procesador y descargaremos la imagen ISO lista para su prueba o su instalación.

Huawei G8, primeras impresiones del terminal Android más premium en la gama media

La feria IFA en Berlín nos está dejando muy buen sabor de boca con toda esa cantidad de terminales que están presentando las grandes firmas que presumen de sus dispositivos Android. Entre ellas debemos mencionar a Huawei, que nos ha sorprendido gratamente con su reloj inteligente Huawei Watch y su smartphone Huawei Mate S.

Pero las novedades no terminan aquí, y aunque siempre damos mucha importancia a la gama alta, este terminal, el Huawei G8 posicionado en la gama media tiene mucho que decir. Así pues, ¡vamos a ello!

Primeras y satisfactorias impresiones del Huawei G8

Comenzando por su aspecto físico, la parte que más veremos del terminal toma prestado el diseño del nuevo Huawei Mate S aunque con unos ligeros retoques. Nos referimos a que cuenta con un diseño más redondeado por lo general, alejándose del diseño más serio de su hermano mayor. Y no está fabricado en plástico, no, pues usa el mismo material de fabricación que el Mate S, por lo que encontramos aluminio en la totalidad de su cuerpo.

Las especificaciones, aunque es una gama media no nos deja frío ni mucho menos. Panel IPS de 5,5 pulgadas con resolución 1080 x 1920 píxeles y 401 ppp. Cuenta con un procesador Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 de ocho núcleos a 1,5 GHz, 2 GB de RAM con almacenamiento interno de 16 GB o 3 GB de RAM con almacenamiento interno de 32 GB.

Para la fotografía dispone de una cámara trasera de 13 megapíxeles con autofoco y flash LED de doble tono. Para los selfies una algo más humilde pero mucho más que suficiente: 5 megapíxeles.

Otras características con las que cuenta es la posibilidad de insertar dos tarjetas SIM a la vez, o bien una tarjeta microSD para ampliar el almacenamiento hasta 64 GB extra. Y por si fuera poco, incluye el mismo lector de huellas dactilares mejorado del Huawei Mate S.

Nuestra más sincera opinión respecto al Huawei G8 es muy positiva. A pesar de que es un gama media, es lo que conocemos como un gama media-alta o gama media premium por su fabricación en metal, las características como el lector de huellas del Mate S y un rendimiento fantástico.

These are some of the best apps and games that came out this week.

Android Wear

iOS finally gets Android Wear support with the release of the Android Wear app on the Play Store. The app works with any iOS device running iOS 8.2 and above, although it is naturally optimized to work with iPhones. The app will allow you to pair any Android Wear smartwatch with your iPhone over Bluetooth. The app will then push all phone notifications to the watch as well as show Google Now cards. There is no support for apps at the moment but the app does allow you to download and install select watch faces. If you’re looking for full-fledged Android Wear experience, you won’t find it here but considering it is working with a different platform altogether the Android Wear experience with iOS is pretty decent and usable as long as you just need to see your notifications on your wrist.

Google Street View

Google’s new Street View app lets you drop down to various locations around the world and watch 360 degree panoramas shot by the Google Street View car or by people shooting 3D panoramas from their phone. The app shows you various locations that you can click on and view immediately. If your device supports a gyroscope you can just move the device around to look around instead of swiping around on the screen. You can also shoot 3D panoramas from the app and upload to your Google account, which could then be visible to other people. You can also connect to a dedicated 360 degree camera, such as the Ricoh Theta S to capture better 360 degree panoramas.

Next Keyboard

Next Keyboard is a great new keyboard for iPhone. The app has next word predictions that learns from you and automatically suggests relevant words as you type along with autocorrect. If you want to move your cursor around, just swipe left or right on the space button instead of using the terrible iOS text selection tool. There are also over 1400 emoji to choose from along with emoji suggestion as you type and stickers. You can also choose from multiple themes for the keyboard.

Skype

Skype received major update on both iOS and Android. The iPhone version gets a new UI, simpler navigation, more powerful search to find conversations, contacts, and groups, and easier switching between call and chat screens. The iPad version also gets that along with location sharing, new large animated emoticons, starting groups and chats, interacting with notifications, and sharing and receiving photos more easily. The Android version of the app gets Material Design update with a floating action button, enhanced search, and improved messaging functionality.

It’s like someone combined table tennis with Fruit Ninja. You simply swipe on the screen to play. There’s local as well as online multiplayer. What’s not to like?

The Deer God

The Deer God is a 3D side-scrolling platforming game where you play as, well, a deer. You run around finishing quests, finding items and power ups to level up your antlers. The game is currently on sale and can be had for $6.99.

I am Bread

I am Bread is. umm. a bread simulator, so to speak. From the creators of Surgeon Simulator, I am Bread is yet another wacky game that you mostly play for the lulz and not because it is a particularly good game. The objective here is to guide the bread on its journey to become a toast by navigating it across various surfaces and objects while not losing its edibility. And that’s pretty much it.
