Las cosas cambian y en el mundo de la Informática más rápidamente. Así, los viejos componentes de toda la vida se tienen que cambiar y adaptar a las nuevas necesidades y si ayer oíamos noticias sobre los cambios en los mainframes u ordenadores centrales, hoy recibimos la noticia de Kinetic Open Storage, un consorcio nuevo que busca cambiar las opciones actuales de almacenamiento.
Kinetic Open Storage está coordinado por la Fundación Linux y en ella participan varias empresas importantes del sector del almacenamiento como Seagate, Western Digital, Toshiba y otros con el fin de encontrar una solución libre a los problemas actuales de almacenamiento.
Pero Kinetic Open Storage no es sólo un conglomerado de empresas de hardware sino que también aparecen empresas relacionadas con el software como Cisco o Red Hat. Todos con el único fin de reorientar los estándares de almacenamiento a un mundo de objetos donde el software no mande sobre el hardware y que además sea compatible con las actuales exigencias, es decir, un almacenamiento en red.
El proyecto es muy ambicioso y puede que más si nos atenemos a declaración de principios y fines que Seagate se impuso hace tiempo cuando ellos iniciaron solos Kinetic Open Storage. Afortunadamente para ellos no se han impuesto fechas ni objetivos a corto plazo por lo que la dificultad es a priori menor de lo esperado.
Realmente me parece muy buena idea la de crear consorcios que busquen un objetivo libre, no sólo para el software sino también para el hardware, además en este caso está coordinado por la Fundación Linux por lo que la confianza es aún mayor. Además los frutos de este consorcio serán aprovechados no sólo por el Kernel de Linux sino también por todas las distribuciones que quieran por lo que la repercusión para el usuario final es mayor aún. Aún así reconozco que son muchas empresas las que hay que coordinar por lo que espero que al final este consorcio, este nuevo proyecto salga adelante.
