Sprint’s Galaxy Note 5 and S6 Edge+ pass through FCC

Sprint users, you can finally breathe a sigh of relief. After seeing multiple carrier variants of the Samsung Galaxy Note 5 and Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge+ pass through the FCC recent, but none with Sprint support, we were left wondering why the carrier would be left out for the time being. Thankfully that has changed today with the arrival of the SM-N920P and SM-G928P at the FCC.

The SM-N920P is the Sprint variant of the Galaxy Note 5 (note the P at the end) and SM-G928P is the Galaxy S6 Edge+. Current rumors have the devices being unveiled under a month away now on August 12, with a release date of somewhere around August 21. Now that we’ve seen every carrier model of the two devices you could possibly need pass through the FCC, those dates are starting to look more and more promising.

Both devices will almost certainly be the Android flagships to beat until probably spring 2016. Samsung has really raised the bar with the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge, there’s no reason the believe the Galaxy Note 5 or S6 Edge+ will lower it back down. ZTE adds a smartwatch to its Axon lineup

ZTE introduced its new Axon brand in the US just last week, when it launched the first smartphone to be called that. Now though, the Chinese company is adding a new device to the Axon lineup.

It's called Axon Watch and, like its name implies, it's a smartwatch.

Oddly though, while the Axon phone was announced in the US and was said to be made specifically for the needs of that market, the Axon Watch got official in China. Furthermore, it seems to be tailor made for that country, since it runs a wearable version of Tencent OS.

That's right, no Android Wear here, which means it's very unlikely that you'll find the Axon Watch outside of China in its current iteration. Obviously though, ZTE could make an Android Wear-running variation and sell that internationally, but no plans for something like this have been announced.

The Axon Watch features a 1.4-inch 400×400 round AMOLED touchscreen which is sapphire-coated, a 1.2 GHz quad-core processor, 512MB of RAM, 4GB of storage, Bluetooth 4.1, and a 300 mAh battery.

Moto G 2015 specs leaked by Swiss retailer Digitec

The official launch of the 2015 Motorola Moto G is still a week away now, but thanks to a product listing from Swiss retailer Digitec, we may already know just what to expect from the new device.

According to the new Moto G product listing on the retailer’s site, the phone is set to launch with a 1.7GHz quad-core processor, 2GB of RAM, 8GB of expandable storage, access to LTE networks, and most impressively a 5-inch 1080p display. If Motorola is able to fit all of this into the new Moto G and still sell the device for under $200, it’s sure to have another hit on its hands. And with Moto’s commitment to updates and vanilla Android, those looking to upgrade from the Nexus 5 should be happy as well.

Qualcomm despedirá más de 3.000 empleados en todo el mundo debido a la caída de ingresos

El fabricante de microprocesadores Qualcomm no está en su mejor etapa de la historia, debido a su caída en los ingresos del actual año por la mala respuesta que está recogiendo de su último procesador, el Snapdragon 810.

Todos conocemos el motivo, pues sufre sobrecalentamiento y esto le está haciendo estragos, ya que los distintos fabricantes del mercado como HTC también han visto afectadas sus ventas y esto se resume en un menor número de pedidos para Qualcomm.

Y por si fuera poco, recientemente hemos conocido un nuevo rumor y afirma que el próximo Snapdragon 820 no ha solucionado totalmente los problemas de temperatura debido a las altas frecuencias que alcanza el chip, por lo que también está dando malos resultados de temperaturas.

Qualcomm despedirá a más de 3.000 empleados

Una muy mala noticia para el fabricante, pues debe afrontar un gran número de despidos para compensar los menores ingresos que están registrando en el actual año.

No solo con HTC han sufrido una menor demanda, también el hecho que Samsung haya optado por su Exynos en los nuevos buque insignia como el Samsung Galaxy S6 edge, en vez de montar el último chipset de Qualcomm.

Para ponernos en situación, han llegado a ver con sus propios ojos una caída del 46 por ciento de los beneficios en el segundo trimestre, por lo que tienen que recortar de un modo u otro y no queda más alternativa que despedir cerca de 4.000 empleados.

Siempre hay etapas malas o baches en la vida que nos hacen sufrir, pues nunca puedes mantenerte en lo más alto de forma permanente, es algo que tenía que llegar tarde o temprano.

Ahora es el momento de demostrar que ha sido la excepción y que no volverá a ocurrir, que podremos seguir confiando en sus productos y frotar las manos ante la llegada del Snapdragon 820, que deberían comenzar a montar algunos terminales a finales del año en curso, o bien para la siguiente hornada de buques insignia.

LibreOffice ya funciona en modo nativo en Wayland, y Firefox pronto lo hará

Algún día, Wayland reemplazará a X.Org como servidor gráfico en Linux, algo que sucederá más pronto que tarde gracias al increíble trabajo de desarrollo que se viene llevando a cabo. Las ventajas de esto son muchas y no viene al caso discutirlas ahora, lo que si es interesante es el hecho de que las apps podrán conectar con este servidor de manera nativa en lugar de necesitar hacerlo a través del gestor de ventanas, que funciona como una suerte de capa intermedia.

En los últimos días, dos importantes proyectos dieron grandes pasos en ese sentido: en principio, LibreOffice ya es totalmente compatible con Wayland, es decir que la variante GTK3 de la suite de oficina ya puede ser utilizada en forma nativa en el servidor gráfico con un funcionamiento casi perfecto, a excepción de algún que otro fallo. Que no debiera ser importante, ya que sus desarrolladores incluso lo recomiendan como para un uso diario y simplemente alertando que se está finalizando el trabajo para contar con el soporte para el redimensionado de ventanas.

Respecto a los bugs es el propio Caolán McNamara, el desarrollador jefe de este proyecto LibreOffice/GTK/Wayland, quien asegura que el funcionamiento es casi completo y que podemos esperar que lleguen muchas mejoras en los próximos lanzamientos de la rama 5.x de la suite de oficina libre.

Suena muy interesante, y lo mejor de todo es que no se trata de la única novedad para con el servidor gráfico, puesto que días atrás también desde Red Hat anunciaron que su implementación de Firefox para ser ejecutado en forma nativa en Wayland marcha muy bien. En este caso, también el trabajo es desarrollado con el port GTK3 de Firefox, es decir que como vemos por ahora únicamente los proyectos más importante lo podrán ofrecer, pero se trata de dos de las apps más utilizadas así que las posibilidades se muestran sumamente interesantes de cara al futuro (recordemos que también VLC ofrecerá soporte para esto).
