Top 10 Mobile Games of 2015

Last year, we made our first Top 10 games of the year list and since then I have been looking forward to the next one. We are seeing a lot of incredible games being launched on the mobile platform across different genres, and it has never been a better time to be a mobile gamer or to write about them.

This year too we have a solid collection of games for you. Games you may have seen in our reviews or our top apps and games of the week lists. It was both fun and difficult to go back through these and pick out the contenders for the best games of the year list, and then slowly whittle down that list to only ten. It would have been even tougher had I actually played all the games that came out this year, but considering that’s impossible, you may find some names missing here, some you may have played and thought were worth including. But that aside, I think we have a pretty good collection here for you this year, so do take a look and let us know what you think in the comments. 2015 was a pretty great year for gaming. Hopefully, 2016 is even better.

10. Angry Birds 2

Never thought you’d see an Angry Birds game in this list? Well, neither did I. However, credit where credit is due. After milking the franchise every way possible for many years, Rovio finally managed to churn out a worthy sequel to the original that retained what was fun about the original game while introducing enough new elements to keep things fresh and interesting. Angry Birds had stopped being fun long ago, that is until Angry Birds 2 came out and I did spend an inordinate amount of time on this game, far more than I had expected, and for that it gets a place on our list.

9. Horizon Chase

Racing genre has become a bit stale these days, and every other racing game now aping the Need for Speed series (including Need for Speed itself) on the consoles. But then Horizon Chase comes along and racing is fun again. Instead of making yet another cookie-cutter racing game, Horizon Chase takes us back to the simpler times with its retro graphics and three button gameplay. Back when graphics weren’t everything, back when it didn’t matter how many licensed vehicles the game had or how much you can customize them, back when it was actually difficult to win and you couldn’t just nitro your way to victory. Not that things are terrible now, but there is a reason we call them the good ol’ days, and Horizon Chase shows us why.

8. Pac-Man 256

Speaking of the good ol’ days, we have a real oldie among us today. It’s hard to find anyone who hasn’t played Pac-Man in their life. But this is not the same game we know but with a delicious new twist that makes it a lot more modern, and dare I say, better. Made by the same people who brought us ‘Crossy Road’, which was in our last year’s best of the year list, the game fuses the old gameplay style with several new elements that goes beyond simply pressing your nostalgia buttons and is actually a lot more fun. If you’re remaking old games, this is how it should be done.

7. Tap Tap Dash

If this list was sorted by the order of time spent on each game, Tap Tap Dash would be at the top. I’m not sure what’s so addictive about this game. Whether it’s the incredibly challenging and fast-paced gameplay that requires split second timing and razor sharp precision, or the never-ending levels that just keep getting harder and harder, or just the simple, no-nonsense nature of it. But I’ve had a hard time putting this game down and really it’s the only one in this list that I’m still playing after all these months. I’m a huge fan of games that require quick, precise inputs and if you do too, you’re gonna love this.

6. Alto’s Adventure

If you go by genre, Alto’s Adventure will most definitely be classified as an action game. But there is something very peaceful and serene about this game. The calming visuals and the beautiful background music altogether makes this a very relaxing game even when you’re trying to score that tricky jump, land that perfect grind, or trying to outpace the mountain elders. Alto’s Adventure is subtle, serene, and calm while delivering plenty of thrills along the way.

Vote for Phablet of the Year 2015

Time for the big guns to battle it out – after we pitted the more compact top-end offerings against each other last week, it’s now the phablets’ turn. Large diagonals are the norm in this category, though some of the contestants are “only” 5.5 inches – but who are we to judge a manufacturer’s decision to have its largest phablet be the size of another’s phone?

Samsung snatched the title in the Phone category with the Galaxy S6 and joins the Phablet race with the Galaxy Note5 – the fifth generation of the lineup that introduced us to the concept of a phablet in the first place. Archrival Apple iPhone 6s Plus is here too, only a second installment in a segment the company long refused to participate in.

The LG V10 packs a number of exclusive features, like extensive manual camera controls and a ticker display, while this year’s better Nexus, the 6P, has the largest camera pixels in the business. The Lumia 950 XL is Microsoft’s long-overdue return to the top shelf, Continuum and all, while the Moto X Style is the most customizable flagship, easy on the wallet too.

The Meizu Pro 5 borrows Samsung’s top-class chipset and pairs it with a 1080p display for a change, while the Xperia Z5 Premium has 4 times as many pixels. The self-proclaimed 2016 flagship killer OnePlus 2 is a crowd favorite, while the more obscure One E9+ is as good as HTC has to offer in the phablet…

BlackBerry Priv battery life

We had the BlackBery Priv for review recently, but we didn’t manage to conduct a proper battery test. Well, we got another chance to play with the slider and there was no escaping this time.

The BlackBerry Priv is equipped with a fairly large 3,410mAh battery. In keeping with current trends, it is sealed in, but the Snapdragon 808, powering the phone, supports Quick Charge 2.0, which can get you from zero to 60% in about 30 minutes. Sadly, the bundled charger doesn’t support quick charging so you would have to get an extra one.

The Priv also has wireless charging capabilities, both Qi and PMA compliant. Sadly, only the US model supports that.

The BlackBerry Priv posted what can best be described as satisfactory battery life results. On a 3G call the smartphone lasted only around 15 hours, which is on the short side. A Samsung Galaxy Note5 can go for twice as long, while a Sony Xperia Z5 Premium and a Huawei Nexus 6P hover around the 20 and a half hour mark. Then again an LG V10 and the Apple iPhone 6s Plus aren’t much better at 16:40 and 15:51, respectively.

It’s the exact same number the V10 posted, marginally lower than the Nexus 6P, and an hour less than the Xperia Z5 Premium. The iPhone 6s rules here with a little short of 12 hours, outlasting the Note5 by an hour.

Top ten fan favorites phones of 2015

Popularity is one thing, but fan love is arguably even more important. It’s now time to look back at the phones that most of declared as favorites in 2015.

While our top 10 trending chart often sees mid-rangers occupy the top spots due to their sheer sales volume, this is a strictly high-end affair. That’s understandable given that it’s flagships that are designed to speak to a geeks’ hearts, even if that means they aren’t as kind to their wallets.

Without further ado – the most loved phone of the year was the Sony Xperia Z5 Premium – the first smartphone to pack a 4K display really bathes in the fan love and if Sony managed to convert that to sales things will really pick up for the company.

Somewhat surprisingly the Galaxy Note 4 went second, handily beating its Note5 successor, which placed 4th. We guess that’s as clear response to the omission of expandable storage and replaceable battery as Samsung can get.

Between the two Samsung phablets we see the OnePlus 2 – the self-proclaimed flagship killer has earned itself plenty of fans despite the limited marketing spending of its maker. In sixth we see the second Sony in the chart – the Xperia Z5, which while more popular than the Z5 Premium can’t quite match its fan conversion rate.

The LG G4 and Galaxy S6 flagships occupy the following two positions, while the Sony Xperia Z3 makes a surprising appearance in 8th. The final two spots in the chart are taken by the Huawei Nexus 6P (which had the least time to gather fans of all phones in the chart) and the Apple iPhone 6s.

The trio that fell just below the line was Motorola Moto X Style, Microsoft Lumia 950 XL and Asus Zenfone 2 – all missing the cut by just a few likes.

Note: We are getting a lot of emails about this or that phone suddenly dropping from our top 10 by favorites list on the homepage. Keep in mind that to keep it relevant we are only including phones that have been in our database for less than 18 months (including rumored status) in that list.

Poll results: Samsung Galaxy S6 is Phone of the year 2015

Samsung Galaxy S6 is Phone of the year 2015, as voted by you – our readers. In what can only be described as a landslide victory, the Korean flagship gathered up a third of all votes and its position was at no point in any jeopardy.

We observed a close race for the second spot though, and despite the Sony Xperia Z5’s early advantage, the Apple iPhone 6s picked up some speed later on and eventually won over. In the end the two were split by a little over 1%.

The LG G4 placed fourth at a considerable distance behind the podium. One out of 10 voters picked it as their phone of the year though, which is not a bad result when you think about it. We did expect more out of the Microsoft Lumia 950, and its 8% come as a bit of a surprise, given the iconic Lumia brand and its cult following.

The LG Nexus 5X, Huawei P8 and HTC One M9+ Supreme Camera, can only qualify for an “also-ran” badge, if such were awarded. And while the Taiwanese entry is a bit obscure and Huawei is yet to establish itself properly as a brand to produce true flagships (under its name, that is), the measly 4% of the LG Nexus 5X are perhaps the biggest disappointment in our Phone of the year 2015 contest.

Stay tuned for round two of our yearly poll, where we will be giving you a chance to vote for the biggest and baddest in the business to determine the winner of the title Phablet of the year…

Top 10 trending phones of week 52

Hello and welcome to the last top 10 weekly chart for the year. The last week to end in 2015 saw little change in the popularity at the top with the first three all retaining its positions. The mid-range trio is obviously doing well during the holiday shopping spree and still getting plenty of attention.

Below it the Samsung Galaxy S6 lost a couple of positions to its Galaxy J2 and Galaxy Grand Prime stablemates, while the iPhone 5s built on its surprising return to the top 10 last week by climbing another position now. Apple is running some cool promotions for its last 4″ smartphone trying to clear its inventory and it appears it’s going pretty well.

The iPhone 6s also rose to 9th, making this a good week for the Apple team. It overtook the Yutopia once its novelty factory went off and the new Yu flagship fell off the chart. In its place we see the OnePlus X, which was boosted by its first invite-free sales days and a new color option.

Steam glitch temporarily allowed access to others’ accounts, now fixed

It seems Valve and the many Steam gamers did not have a very merry Christmas. A glitch in the system caused many people to see other users’ accounts instead of their own.

Multiple users reported seeing different accounts when they went into the Account Details page on their Steam app. Others were also reporting a language other than their default on the store’s homepage.

For a while it wasn’t clear whether this was a glitch at Valve’s end or something more nefarious like a hack. Turns out though, it was the former. After fixing the glitch, Valve later informed Gamespot that it was a caching issue as a result of configuration change earlier in the day, which caused users to see other users’ cached pages.

Valve assured that no unauthorized actions were taken and users could only see the page and no additional action is required on the user’s end. But while that issue may have been solved, some users are still experiencing issues purchasing items. Your mileage may…
