Nexus users running Marshmallow facing Google sync issues

Nexus users running Android 6.0 and above are reporting Google sync issues on their device. The issue causes apps like Gmail, Inbox, etc. from not syncing in the background, causing the owners to miss email notifications.

The issue seems widespread enough, with a thread on Nexus forum and AOSP issue tracker each, and several people reporting seeing the issue on their device. Google employees have been made aware of the issue, and are working on it.

Some have observed that the issue could be due to the Doze feature in Android Marshmallow, which suspends certain tasks in the background while the device is motionless to save battery. Excluding these apps from the Doze list does seemingly solve the issue for some.

The 20 most popular phones of 2015

As we start off 2015, nostalgia is definitely in the air and curiosity for some insight on the grander scheme of things is all but natural. The past twelve months saw quite a few revolutionary device releases that managed to ramp up an impressive number of hits (we are talking a whopping 30 million for the first spot). 2015 definitely set a new bar for the entire mobile realm with more and more powerful mid-rangers proving that a good phone doesn’t need to break the bank anymore.

But, first things first, we have to give credit where credit is due – the Samsung Galaxy S6 was clearly the biggest star of 2015, drawing an unprecedented avalanche of attention. It managed to gather almost twice as many hits as its runner-up and if we factor in its curvy sibling – the S6 edge, which sits at eight place, this lead becomes even more impressive. And while we are discussing the Korean giant, the rest of the chart speaks for itself with every other spot from third all the way to seventh occupied by its handsets as well.

It is also worth noting that most of said models are mid-range offers from the company’s new metal “A” series as well as the budget “J” lineup, proving that the mid-ranges is quickly becoming the new king. As for the second place holder, well it is the Asus Zenfone 2 – its best-spec’d ZE551ML version in particular.

The Zenfone 2 family turned out to be quite successful and rightfully so, offering a nice combination of a powerful Intel Atom-based hardware platform and a reasonable price tag. The only real problem with the Zenfone 2 is that it currently consists of a sea of variations, special editions and memory options that is almost impossible to figure out. Still, if we factor in all the modifications and their hits, the Zenfone 2 only tightens its grip on the second spot.

To finish up the top half of the list, we have the third installment of Motorola’s budget-friendly Moto G series – offering the same near-stock Android experience on a shoestring budget. And then we get our first phone out of China with the Xiaomi Redmi 2 – another powerful budget offer. Lenovo is another OEM that deserves recognition for its work during the year. Its sensible A6000, A6000 and K3 Note offers have been doing well in Asia and India and it shows.

You can check the rest of the top 20 chart for yourself and be sure to share your thoughts on these 2015 popularity trends in the comment section below.

Lenovo Vibe Shot battery life test

The Lenovo Vibe Shot packs a surprisingly beefy battery for a 5-incher. 3,000mAh rivals the Xperia Z lineup, which is known for great battery life. The Snapdragon 615 chipset should do quite well too.

“Should,” but the Endurance rating of 54 hours is less than we expected. The ZTE Nubia Z9 mini (2,900mAh, S615) lasted 10 hours longer, while the OnePlus X matched it (2,520mAh, old S800 chipset). What went wrong? Let’s investigate.

The Talk time of 16 hours and a bit is less than the Z9 mini, but beats out the OnePlus and the Huawei Honor 7 (3,100mAh, Kirin 935). The Xperia Z5 Compact lasts almost double this time with a smaller battery though, so the Vibe Shot is average but there’s plenty of room to optimize.

Top smartphone reviews of 2015

Last year our reviewers always had something interesting on their hands, but the fun for 2015 is now over. Time to see which of our reviews proved to be the most popular before CES kicks off and pulls the spotlight towards 2016 gadgets.

This year marked a major turnaround for Samsung, which completely rethought its design with the Galaxy S6 and flexed its advanced manufacturing muscle with the Galaxy S6 edge. The S6 review was our most read this year and even then people were curious enough to check out the S6 edge review.

The Galaxy S6 also starred in some of the best-read shootouts this year. Our Intergalactic camera shootout was the peak of the versus articles, but the S6 also brawled with the LG G4, HTC One M9, Apple iPhone 6 and Sony Xperia Z5.

For all of Samsung’s popularity, the Asus Zenfone 2 review breathed down the neck of the S6. That review was published a month later, so maybe with enough time the competitively priced mid-ranger could have taken the crown.

Speaking of, the Motorola Moto G (3rd gen) review wasn’t quite as popular as the Zenfone but it beat out all the rest for third place.

LG’s highlight was the G4, the V10 came too late in the game to score enough hits. At least LG had a flagship make its mark, our most-read Sony review was of the Xperia M4 Aqua. The Xperia Z3+ is much lower on the list and the Z5 isn’t even on it. The rapid fire of Z3, Z3+ and Z5 may have caused some reading fatigue.

Xiaomi did quite well too with the Mi 4i and Redmi 2 reviews garnering a lot of interest, ahead of other Android upstarts.

If in 2015 you decided to take a break from fast-paced world of smartphones, now is a good chance to catch up with the reviews our readers found most interesting.

Samsung Galaxy S6 review: Subject Zero

The Samsung Galaxy S6 is not the next big thing. It’s “project zero”. The reboot. But was there really anything wrong with the S-line – the standard-setter, the home of the super droids? OK, design needed looking at for sure. But hey, other brands do facelifts – Samsung goes for a complete overhaul.

Asus Zenfone 2 review: A balancing act
World domination was surely on the mind of at least one top exec over at Asus headquarters, when the crew gathered to outline the Zenfone 2 game plan. The smartphone will be sold globally, and the stores in a few lucky countries already have their shelves well stocked. The company is aiming to sell 30 million phones this year, with the Zenfone 2 being a chief contributor to that number.

Moto G (3rd gen) review: Good as gold
It is hardly a surprise that the third generation Motorola Moto G is one of the most anticipated smartphones of 2015. After all, in less than two years after the first iteration of the smartphone (Moto G became the most successful phone in the company’s history) made its debut, the Moto G product family has successfully redefined what a budget Android handset should look, feel, and perform like and how much it should cost.

Galaxy S6 edge vs. Galaxy Note Edge: A camera shootout
We had the Samsung Galaxy S6 edge with us for a short time so we took a stroll though Barcelona with a Galaxy Note Edge for an impromptu shootout. We also had an Apple iPhone 6 on hand so we snapped a couple of photos with that too. After all, with Samsung’s new appreciation of metal frames the Galaxy S6 edge will look to attract converts.

Galaxy S6 vs. Galaxy S5 vs. Note 4 vs. iPhone 6: Intergalactic camera shootout
A quality camera has always been a big part of Galaxy flagships and Samsung is pushing new improvements every six months. The two-step cadence goes Galaxy S then Note then S again – we’re at the Galaxy S6 step of this cycle and it’s time for a retrospect of how image quality has developed since 2014.

Samsung Galaxy A5 and A5 Duos review: Five star
Samsung’s newly found love for “premium build” is spilling down the ranks and if the new A-series get half the love and attention the S-line has been getting, it will be a job well done. The South Koreans are right to try and stir things up in the midrange to turn declining profits around. Flagships are to be admired from a distance, the average user would think, and spend their cash on gadgets that are simpler, safer and more…

Poll: Samsung Galaxy A9 (2016) – hot or not

The Samsung Galaxy A9 (2016) went official a few days ago, for the first time taking the A-series beyond the Notes’ 5.7 inches. Even though it’s the first of its kind, it also gets the model year in brackets as part of its name to stress its ties to the completely updated premium-built A family.

The 6-inch FullHD display may be a hint at what to expect from future Notes, and also mean the death of the sole even numbered A model, the 5.7-inch Galaxy A8. Whatever the implications, the A9 (2016) is the best-specced smartphone the company has to offer north of the Note5’s diagonal.

Powered by the Snapdragon 652, a top-class performer the A9 must be, despite the 6 in Qualcomm’s chip designation. Dual quad-core CPU with a quartet of Cortex-A72’s in charge, coupled with 3GB of RAM should make even demanding tasks a breeze, and the GPU will appreciate the conservative choice of resolution.

A 13MP sensor behind an f/1.9 lens, together with optical image stabilization makes for flagship grade imaging, at least on paper, and the 8MP front shooter offers plenty of resolution to please selfie enthusiasts. Fingerprint recognition and Samsung Pay mean that you can leave bank cards at home, so you can cut down on the stuff you’re carrying, though obviously that’s not a top concern with a 6-inch 200g phone. And all of this should be able to run for quite a while on a generous 4,000mAh battery, complete with fast charging.

Overall, the Samsung Galaxy A9 (2016) is a comprehensive package for big-screen lovers. In a way, it’s a larger Galaxy Note without the S-Pen, and that could help rationalize past its $500 price. So what do you reckon, hot or…

The big Android 6.0 Marshmallow update list: Start of 2015 edition

People increasingly care about software updates – in part because they want to get the new features, but security is becoming a more and more important topic. The Nexus devices (well, the ones from 2013 and later anyway) and Android One are a given.

Here’s the scorecard for devices that are not directly backed by Google but have been confirmed to get the latest version of its mobile platform. Keep in mind that this list includes only devices that have been officially confirmed to get Android 6.0 Marshmallow. Some other devices are likely to get it too, some most likely won’t, but those aren’t on the list.

This is the official list as of the start of 2015, though not that some of these updates won’t roll out for several months (and some are already available).

Instagram brings back the Peek feature to its Android app

After momentarily introducing the Peek feature in the Android version of its app in the previous beta, Instagram later pulled the feature for unknown reasons. It seems the company is now ready to roll it out again, as some users are now seeing the feature back in the latest v7.14.0 of the app.

For those not aware, the Peek feature is lifted from the iOS version of the app, which makes use of the sophisticated pressure sensitive display on the iPhone 6s to let you press harder on the screen to get a ‘peek’ at the image without actually opening it. This lets you quickly look at the image and then release the screen for the image to pop back. The Android version uses a cruder implementation, with the user having to press and hold on the screen for a while before the image pops up and then release it for it to pop back.

As mentioned before, only some users are seeing the feature even now, even if you have the latest version installed. It seems the feature is enabled server side, so you may have to wait a while even if you get the latest update before you can start using it.

Microsoft joins other tech giants in warning users about suspected state-sponsored hacking attacks

Microsoft has joined the list of companies that claim to warn users they suspect may have been targeted by a state-sponsored attack. Quite recently, Yahoo jumped on the bandwagon, and other tech giants including Google and Facebook are also in the list.

“We’re taking this additional step of specifically letting you know if we have evidence that the attacker may be ‘state-sponsored’ because it is likely that the attack could be more sophisticated or more sustained than attacks from cybercriminals and others,” Microsoft said in a blog post. “These notifications do not mean that Microsoft’s own systems have in any way been compromised.”

Keep in mind that such notifications don’t necessarily mean that your account has been compromised – it just indicates that Microsoft has the evidence that it’s been targeted. However, in case you do receive such a notification, it’s recommend that you take some steps, including turning on two-step verification, changing password, and making sure your computer software (such as Web browser and anti-virus) is…

Microsoft CEO says company’s smartphone market share is ‘unsustainable’

In a recent interview, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has said that the company’s current smartphone market share is “unsustainable.” He, however, argued that their aim is to create a world where a device is of lesser importance compared to the services it can access.

“I think we do ourselves a disservice if we measure our success by just looking at: What’s the market share of HoloLens? What’s the market share of Xbox? What’s the market share of PCs? What’s the market share of our phones?” he said.

“If you think of this more like a graph, these [devices] are all nodes. Sometimes the user will use all of these devices . sometimes they’ll use only one or two of our devices and some other platforms — so be it. But we want to make sure that we are completing the experience across all of these devices.”

It’s worth mentioning that market research firm Gartner in its latest report had revealed a Windows Phone market share of just 1.7%, down nearly 50% compared to Q3 2014.

Nadella also touched on many other topics in the interview – to access the full report, head to the Via link…

Oculus Touch controller delayed, will now ship in H2 2016

Oculus has announced that the Touch controller for its Rift VR headset will be delayed. According to the company, the controller will now be shipping in the second half of 2016 – it was earlier scheduled to be shipped in H1.

“On the path to perfecting Touch, we’ve decided that we need more time before release,” the company said in a blog post. “On Touch hardware, we’ve made significant advances in ergonomics, and we’re implementing many changes that make Touch even more comfortable, reliable, and natural. We’re also implementing changes that improve hand pose recognition.”

Pre-orders for the controller will open a few months prior to launch. Meanwhile, the headset Rift remains on schedule, meaning it’ll ship sometime in Q1 this year, with pre-orders launching “very soon,” Oculus…
