Nearly one-third of all active Android devices now run Lollipop; 0.7% are on Marshmallow

Google has released the latest Android platform distribution numbers, revealing that Marshmallow – which is the latest iteration of its mobile operating system – is now powering 0.7% of all active Android devices worldwide. That’s slightly up from the December figure of 0.5%.

Lollipop meanwhile gained around 3% share, reaching a total of 32.6% this month. However, KitKat remains the king of the hill with 36.1% Android market share, although that’s slightly down from the 36.6% share reported last month.

Among other older Android versions, Jelly Bean’s share stood at 24.7%, down around 2%, while Ice Cream Sandwich and Gingerbread’s share of the market stood at 2.7% and 3%, respectively – both marginally down. Froyo’s share, however, remain unchanged at…

Sony unveils three new Android-powered, HDR-compatible 4K TVs

Sony unveiled three new 4K televisions at its CES conference today. Dubbed XBR-X930D, XBR-X940D, and XBR-X850D, the new devices – which the company calls 4K Ultra HD TVs – are powered by Android TV and offer HDR (High Dynamic Range) compatibility.

While the XBR-X940D will only be available in a 75-inch model, the XBR-X850D series will consist of 55, 65, 75, and 85-inch models. The XBR-X930D, on the other hand, will come in 55-inch and 65-inch sizes – it also features Sony’s new Slim Backlight Drive technology, which the company says “uses a unique grid array local dimming backlighting structure to distribute the backlight source more precisely to each specific zone of the screen while maintaining a slim display.”

All the new TVs feature Triluminos display, and pack in Sony’s 4K Processor X1 that the company claims enhances color, contrast, and clarity, as well as improves the quality of 4K images. Of course, they also support Google Cast, allowing you to quickly beam content from your computer or handheld devices like smartphones and tablets.

While there was no word on pricing, Sony said the newest TV lineup will be available for purchase in “early 2016.”

Aside from the new TVs, the Japanese company also unveiled a new app – dubbed Ultra – which it says will allow users to purchase and stream 4K HDR movies and TV shows directly on their Sony 4K HDR TV. The app will be launched this year in the…

ZTE unveils Grand X 3 and Avid Plus entry-level phones

ZTE announced two new entry-level additions to its US smartphone portfolio at its CES press conference. Neither the ZTE Grand X 3 for Cricket Wireless nor ZTE Avid Plus for T-Mobile and MetroPCS will impress you with their specs, but they both come at attractive off-contract prices.

The Grand X 3 packs a 5.5″ 720p screen and a Snapdragon 210 with 1.3GHz quad-core CPU and 2GB of RAM to keep things going. It has an 8MP camera at the back and a 2MP front one, while its 16GB storage is expandable via a microSD slot. Android 5.1 Lollipop is in charge or operations.

A 3,080 mAh removable battery powers the Grand X 3 and it should last quite a while given the modest hardware at hand. You get a USB Type-C reversible port – a feature normally reserved for more expensive smartphones.

The ZTE Grand X 3 will be available shortly on Cricket Wireless in the US for $130 without a contract.

The ZTE Avid Plus is even more compact, coming with a 5″ FWVGA (854x480px) LCD. It’s powered by a 1.1GHz quad-core CPU of unknown architecture, though we strongly suspects it’s of the archaic Cortex-A7 variety, and 1GB of RAM. The 8GB of built-in storage are once again expandable thanks to the presence of a card slot.

The Avid Plus has a 5MP camera at the back and a 2MP one at the front. Android 5.1 Lollipop is once again ZTE’s platform of choice even if Marshmallow is more than a few months old now. At least battery life should be decent with a 2,300 mAh juice pack.

The ZTE Avid Plus will be available at T-Mobile on January 20 and shortly after to MetroPCS. It will retail for $115 off…

PlayStation Now requires a compatible PS4, PS Vita or just a smart TV, a DualShock 4 controller and $20 per month. It has an offer for $99 for 12 months, but it is a Christmas special and will expire on January 11, so if you are interested, now is your last chance for this promotion.

Anyway, some of the new titles available in the PlayStation Now library are Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception, Ratchet & Clank Future: Quest for Booty, God of War: Chains of Olympus, God of War: Ghosts of Sparta, Heavenly Sword, Journey, Flower, and Flow. And Pattern Log-in, Secret Screen, and Record Block will apparently help you protect your private files and…

Qualcomm shows the LeTV Le Max Pro as the first Snapdragon 820 phone

Qualcomm shared some interesting news today with the press at CES in Las Vegas and spilled the beans on the first Snapdragon 820 smartphone – the LeTV Le Max Pro.

The first announcement was the automotive version of the Snapdragon 820 chip called Snapdragon 820Am. It is capable of processing simultaneously huge amounts of data – it can track the driver’s movements via sensors and cameras, output picture on few 4K displays, provide real-time navigation and assistance, among other things.

The vanilla smartphone version of the Snapdragon 820 chip was showcased as part of an unlikely pioneer – a phone by the Chinese company LeTV, a relative newcomer to the smartphone market. The Letv Le Max Pro will be featuring the ultrasonic fingerprint technology made possible by the chipset and it will also support WiFi ad. Unfortunately, we didn’t get any more details about the phone aside from those tiny bits.

In case you need a refresher, the Snapdragon 820 is a departure from the current gen of chipsets, and features a custom-designed 2.2GHz quad-core Kryo processor, a better Adreno 530 GPU, Quick Charge 3.0, tri-band Wi-Fi, LTE Cat.12 connectivity, among many other novelties.
