BlackBerry Priv now available in more European countries

Starting today, the BlackBerry Priv is available for purchase on three more European markets – Italy, the Netherlands, and Spain. The three countries join Germany and the UK, where the Android slider has been available for a while now. The price is the same as in Germany – €779.

We’re talking about BlackBerry’s official store here, you might be able to find the Priv in other countries, just not straight from the Canadian company’s store. France is still left out, however, but the Priv is coming, albeit later this year.

The Priv is BlackBerry first Android-running smartphone, featuring a 5.4-inch QHD AMOLED display, Snapdragon 808 chipset and an 18MP camera. If you’re still undecided, it might be wise to check out our detailed review of the handset before heading out to the store.

Microsoft stops supporting Internet Explorer 8, 9 and 10 next week

Microsoft has officially announced it will cease to support Internet Explorer 8, 9 and 10 from January 12. The company will issue a Windows update KB3123303, which will place a prompt box in the three browsers urging people to update to Internet Explorer 11. This will happen for Windows 7 and Server 2008 R2 users.

The box can be disabled by enterprise users who don’t want to jump ship by altering the registry. However, switching to Internet Explorer 11 is far the better option in the long run.

The end of life status for the Internet Explorer 7, 8 and 9 means that Microsoft won’t release any more security patches, leaving the browsers vulnerable to potential new threats. This way it hopes users will move on to a more recent version of the browser, hopefully Edge.

Alcatel OneTouch joins the Windows 10 race with the Fierce XL

After all the Pixies from yesterday, Alcatel OneTouch has now announced a different beast, the Fierce XL, running Windows 10. OK, “beast” might be an overstatement for a device, powered by a Snapdragon 210 chipset, but we’ll let it slide.

The Alcatel OneTouch Fierce XL has a 5.5-inch display with 720p resolution, protected by Dragontrail Glass. The S210 packs a quad-core Cortex-A7 CPU, ticking at 1.1GHz, RAM is 2GB and internal storage is 16GB, microSD-expandable.

Alcatel OneTouch Fierce XL

There’s an 8MP primary camera with an LED flash, with video capture oddly limited to 720p (the chipset itself is good for 1080p). On the front you get a 2MP selfie snapper.

The smartphone measures 151.9 x 77.8 x 9.4 and weighs a somewhat hefty 174g, for a plastic-built 5.5-inch device that is. And the weight is not due to battery capacity, as it’s only listed at 2,500mAh. Alcatel claims that’s good for 14 hours of calls, but the 3-hour charging time raises eyebrows.

The Fierce XL has all your basic connectivity needs covered, with quad-band 2G, triple-band 3G, and Cat.4 LTE over three bands. Only three, you say, but those are T-Mobile’s LTE bands in the US, where the Fierce XL is headed. There’s also Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.1, and GPS.

The Alcatel OneTouch Fierce XL will be available starting later this month in Light Blue color only. Although no specific number has been quoted, the press release does say that the phone will be “affordably priced” and so it should, given the…

New official Space Black Milanese Loop Apple Watch band spotted online

Ever since it released the Apple Watch, the Cupertino giant has been introducing tweaks and small additions to keep fan interest alive. As with most other products, Apple has been capitalizing big on accessories, like the special Hermes collection and making sure to spoil the user for choice. In the latest such move, Apple has shared yet another Apple Watch band – the Space Black Milanese Loop.

It was spotted on a few official Apple websites, first in the Czech Republic, then Portugal and Hungary. Coincidentally or not, the listing comes only hours after the OEM announced that it will be bringing the Apple Watch to Malaysia, Portugal and the Chech Republic, which could suggest that the product was inadvertently reveled.

This theory is further backed by the fact that the band still has no price listed, its description is copied over from the normal Milanese Band and the only other information is that it should start shipping in about a week and it is the 42mm variety, although one of the provided renders clearly reads 38mm, adding further to the possibility of a mix-up. Speaking of the old Milanese Band, the new one actually looks absolutely identical to it, only bearing a Space Black dye.

EXCLUSIVE: Oppo details upcoming camera-centric F1 smartphone

Oppo’s new F-series aim to put an emphasis on mobile imaging, as the company announced a couple of days ago. The first model in the lineup, the F1, is said to go official sometime this month, but until then, Oppo is giving us bits of the puzzle, one by one.

We’ve now been told that the smartphone will come with a 13MP primary camera with phase detection autofocus. That’s nothing new, when recent Oppo handsets are concerned, the R7 and R7s come with the same setup. On the front, the 8MP camera appears to be borrowed from the R-series too, but in fact it’s paired with a much wider f/2.0 lens, compared to the R7’s f/2.4.

On the software end, the camera is backed by Oppo’s PureImage 2.0+ platform, meaning a wide set of modes (presented as plug-ins), as well as the obligatory filters.

Oppo F1 official press images

We’re yet to see specifics on the chipset, but Oppo tells us the F1 will be Snapdragon-powered, and that more than likely means the S615 found in numerous midrange handsets, including a few of Oppo’s own. What we do know is that the phone will have 3GB of RAM.

The photos show a device looking a lot like the existing R7/R7 lite and proportions point to a 5-inch display, but that hasn’t been set in stone. As of now that’s all the info we have on the Oppo F1, but with an announcement promised for the coming weeks, the blanks will be filled sooner rather than…
