Infographic details the Samsung Exynos 8890 chipset that will be in the Galaxy S7

Samsung is very proud of the latest mobile chipset it’s created. And to prove this to the world, the Korean company has just released an infographic that’s all about the recently unveiled Exynos 8890. This will be one of the SoCs employed by the upcoming Galaxy S7 models, so everything that Samsung’s packed into the 8890 will impact the mobile world very soon indeed.

The company boasts that its custom CPU core used in the Exynos 8890 brings with it 30% more performance and 10% better energy efficiency when compared to the Exynos 7420 from last year’s flagships. As for the built-in LTE modem, it supports Cat.12 download speeds (up to 600Mbps) and Cat.13 uploads (150Mbps maximum), so it’s ready for the networks of tomorrow.

Oppo F1 goes official, Vietnam gets it on January 21

Oppo F1 is the first member of the new F-series, which will be focusing on luxurious design and premium camera experience. It is now available on pre-order in Vietnam, but more markets will be getting it soon.

The Oppo F1 houses within a thin 7.25mm aluminum unibody and packs a 5″ IPS display of 720p resolution protected by a curved Gorilla Glass 4 piece. The chipset in charge is Snapdragon 616 with an octa-core 1.7GHz Cortex-A53 processor, Adreno 405 GPU, and 3GB of RAM. The extra amount of RAM will surely make happy the multi-tasking fans.

The rear camera is an ordinary 13MP snapper with f/2.2 lens and a single-LED flash. The front camera gets the boost – it’s an 8MP selfie shooter with f/2.0 lens (1/4″ sensor) and its software tweaks include Beautify 3.0 interface, 8 live color filters, and most importantly – it can use the screen as a flash in low-light conditions.

The Oppo F1 specs sheet also lists 16GB expandable storage, dual-SIM capabilities with LTE connectivity, and a 2,500 mAh battery. Android 5.1 Lollipop with Color 2.1 launcher run the Oppo F1.

Oppo F1 is available on pre-order in Vietnam right now for roughly $290 and will ship on January 21. The first 1,500 people to pre-order the F1 will receive an iLike Bluetooth headset.

We expect more markets to get the Oppo F1 soon.

HTC Vive pre-orders kick off on February 29

The pre-order campaign for the HTC Vice, one of the Oculus Rift main competitors, is going live on February 29. No need to check your calendars, indeed it’s a leap year.

Oculus Rift is already available on pre-order and it will launch this March. You can opt for one for the rather hefty £499 or $599.

The VR market will be having a blast this year with the Oculus kicking off first. The HTC Vive will be following just a month later – in April. There is still no info about Sony’s PlayStation VR.

HTC Vive is developed in collaboration with Valve and is also known as the Steam VR. It has gathered huge interest over the past few months and HTC even announced an upgrade on the final product just weeks before it goes on pre-order – the headset is now smaller, has a more comfy strap that can accommodate glasses, a camera, sharper displays, two-step triggers and doubled battery life for the controller.

HTC is still mum on the pricing, but it has never concealed it is targeting quality rather than affordability, so there is a good chance it goes higher than the Oculus Rift. We’ll know soon.

CES 2016 wrap-up – see what you might have missed

Like it or not, even the best of events have to come to an end, which was also the natural faith of CES 2016. It was a reasonably eventful show and while we didn’t get much in terms of new flagships there was plenty of new hardware in Las Vegas.

Below is an extensive table of all the things we spotted at the venue and deemed intriguing and relevant enough to share. As far as handsets go, Huawei brought a few devices to show and we were also lucky enough to be able to play around with each of them and share our first hands-on impressions. These were the Huawei Honor 5X and Mate 8, both not making a first appearance, but still fresh additions to the OEM’s lineup. Then there is the new 10.0-ich MediaPad M2 tablet and two now exclusive shades of the Huawei Watch.

LG didn’t disappoint either with a couple of new mid-range offers. The K7 and K10 might not impress with particularly beefy specs sheets, but they represent the start of a brand new line of LG handsets for the masses. Moving on, there is ZTE with another pair of new models. The ZTE Avid Plus and ZTE Grand X 3 are admittedly underwhelming in the hardware department with their Qualcomm Snapdragon 210 chips, but still have some interesting features to offer, like a USB Type-C connector on the latter, all at a really low price point.

Speaking of budget solutions, Alcatel made sure to refresh its lineup for 2016 as well and in keeping with its long-standing market strategy, it made sure to roll out as many new options as it can. You can check out the new Pixi 4 lineup, as well as the OneTouch models for yourselves, but don’t fixate on the enclosed specs too much, as they will surely morph and change as these devices eventually make their way into carrier offers.

Samsung Galaxy J5 2016 edition pops up in India’s import office

The 2016 edition of the Samsung Galaxy J5 has surfaced on Indian import database Zauba. The online document shows the Galaxy J5 (2016) has the model number SM-J510 and has entered the country for testing purposes on January 8.

In terms of specs, the listing doesn’t reveal much. The display of the Galaxy J5 (2016) is the only thing listed and it’s a 5.2″ display. Resolution isn’t known yet, but we presume it’s going to be 720p, like the current-gen Galaxy J5.

There’s neither a price, nor release date for the 2016 Galaxy J5. The midranger could be ready for prime time at the end of February in time for the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

AT&T resurrects Unlimited data plans, but only if you love TV

If you wish you had a grandfathered unlimited data plan on AT&T now’s your chance to wind back the clock. The wireless carrier is bringing back the unlimited option, though not quite the same as it was before – you also have to sign up for a TV service, either U-Verse or DirectTV.

Here’s the deal. You get unlimited calls and texts, plus “unlimited” data (which may be throttled after 22GB) for $100 a month. Additional smartphones are $40 a month, except the fourth line, which is free.

You can add secondary devices too, like a tablet for another $40 (or $10 if you’re cool with just 1GB/month), select smartwatches for $10, “connected devices” for $10 and phones with just call/texting for $25. All those prices are per month.

New AT&T customers that already have a U-Verse or DirectTV subscription are eligible for up to $500 in credits with a trade-in and can buy a new smartphone with AT&T Next. If you’re the opposite – AT&T subscriber, but not a DirectTV one – you can sign up for the TV service for $20 a month for the first year (of a 2-year contract).

Things are a little messy, hopefully the chart above makes it clear. It doesn’t help that the fourth phone isn’t quite “free,” but you start getting your $40 back as credit. Check out the AT&T press release for more details as the deal can be hard to wrap your head around.

Meizu MX6 to run on Helio X20 with 10-core processor

MediaTek announced the Helio X20 chip back in May last year and the first mass-produced samples were expected to be available to the manufacturers by the end of 2015. Elephone P9000 was the first smartphone to supposedly utilize the X20 chip, but as it turned out the phone was downgraded to the Helio P10 with an 8-core CPU.

Today AnTuTu’s database gives us hope we will be seeing the first Helio X20 smartphone sooner rather than later. Apparently it will be the next Meizu flagship – the Meizu MX6. Someone probably tested the device on AnTuTu and it saved its specs.

So, the MX6, as purported by AnTuTu, will pack a 1080p display and run on the MT Helio X20 chip with a 10-core 3-cluster processor (2x Cortex-A72 at 2.5GHz, 4x Cortex-A53 at 2.0GHz, 4x Cortex-A53 at 1.4GHz), Mali-T880 MP4 GPU, and 3GB of RAM.

The rest of the rumored MX6 specs include 32GB storage and Android 6.0 Marshmallow base for the Flyme launcher.

There is still no official info on the matter, but the MX5 was among the first to utilize by the Helio X10 chip, so there is a good chance this Meizu MX6 rumor will come to pass.

TP-Link outs three Android smartphones – Neffos C5L, C5, and C5 Max

Neffos is the new brand established by TP-Link for its first entries in the smartphone market. The Neffos C5L, Neffos C5, and Neffos C5 Max by TP-Link are the first three smartphones aiming to carry the flag for the brand.

All three Neffos smartphones run on Android 5.1 Lollipop, skinned with lightweight-looking proprietary launcher.

The Neffos C5L is the smallest entry of all – it has 4.5″ FWVGA display and runs on the Snapdragon 210 chip (4x Cortex-A7 at 1.1GHz, Adreno 304, 1GB RAM). While the hardware doesn’t sound impressive, it should be more than enough for a sub-HD smartphone.

The other C5L key features include 8GB expandable storage, 8MP main snapper, a 2MP selfie lens, LTE connectivity and a 2,000 mAh battery.

Neffos C5 comes with a bigger 5″ 720p IPS LCD and utilizes the MT6735 chip (4x Cortex-A53 at 1.3GHz, Mali-T720 MP2 GPU, 2GB RAM). IT packs 16GB of expandable storage, LTE connectivity, an 8MP rear camera, a 5MP selfie snapper, and a 2,200 mAh battery.

Finally, the Neffos C5 Max packs a 5.5″ 1080p IPS LC and ticks on the MT6753 chip (8x Cortex-A53 at 1.3GHz, Mali-T720 MP3 GPU, 2GB RAM). The rest of the highlighted specs include 16 gigs of expandable storage, LTE connectivity, a 13MP main shooter and a 5MP selfie snapper, plus a beefy 3,045 mAh battery.

All three Neffos phones will be launched in Pearl White and Dark Gray paintjobs. Detailed pricing and availability is yet to be announced.

Snapdragon 820-powered Galaxy S7 passes through AnTuTu

AnTuTu posted on its Weibo account the detected specs of the Samsung Galaxy S7, the 5.1″ one (model number SM-G935A). This, as it turns out, is the Snapdragon 820 version, which has essentially the same specs as the Galaxy S7 edge+ version.

The chipset is paired with 4GB of RAM and runs Android 6.0 Marshmallow (with TouchWiz, of course). This particular unit comes with 64GB of storage, but obviously that’s no guarantee that Samsung will be moving up from using 32GB as base. And also no word on a microSD slot, as expected.

Samsung Galaxy S7 specs as detected by AnTuTu

The Galaxy S7 has a new camera setup – 12MP BRITECELL sensor on the back and 5MP snapper on the front. The new camera promises better low-light performance and a wider dynamic range compared to the current model.

We will have to feign surprise when Samsung unveils the S7 lineup, we know its ins and outs already. One thing that’s not 100% clear is how the Snapdragon and Exynos chipsets will be distributed across the 5.1″, 5.5″ and 6″ models.
