iPhone shipments estimated at 55M for March quarter, first YoY decline since 2007 launch

Investment firm Piper Jaffrey has adjusted its estimate for Apple’s current quarter iPhone shipments. Down 12%, the projected figure for the quarter ending in March (Q2 2016 by US policy) is now 55 million units shipped, as opposed to the previous 62.5 million units.

The number, if it proves correct, will mark the first year-on-year decline in iPhone shipments since the launch of the original iPhone in 2007. To be fair, even the initial estimate was dangerously close to the 61.2M units shipped in the same period last year, itself a massive increase over the 43.7M from 2014. Piper Jaffrey’s forecast for Q3 (ending in June), has gotten its due cut as well, from 48.5M to 45M units shipped.

The analysts’ revision is a result of persisting rumors from Apple supply chain companies, stating that Cupertino has been reducing part orders. While previously insisting that a single supplier’s reduced orders aren’t indicative of overall shipments, the investment firm has been forced to reconsider, after cumulative reports from multiple suppliers.

The numbers result in revenue expectations around the $55.8 billion mark, come the Q2 report. For Q1 the company projects a revenue of about $77 billion, based on 75 million iPhones, 5.8 million Macs, 17.5 million iPads, and 6 millions Watches…

‘The Room Three’ now available on the Play Store

Mobile gamers may well be aware of The Room series, available on iOS and Android. The first two games in the series received widespread acclaim for their intricate puzzles and beautiful level design.

The developers recently released the third game in the series on iOS, which we covered in our Best Apps and Games list back then. The game is now available on Android and can be purchased off the Play Store for $4.99.

If you are a fan of the previous games, there is no reason not to like this. The puzzles are even more intricate this time around, not to mention a lot more difficult. The developers have really gone overboard with the scale and detail on this one, with bigger puzzles that include many, many smaller puzzles within.

For fans of the series and newcomers alike, highly…

Marshmallow-based CM 13 nightly builds now available for HTC One A9 and Moto E (1st Gen)

If you’re an HTC One A9 owner as well as a fan of CyanogenMod builds, you’ll be glad to know that Cyanogen has released the Android 6.0-based CM 13 nightly build for the device, although only for the GSM model.

Agreed, the One A9 already comes with Android 6.0 out-of-the-box, but being an HTC phone, it runs the company’s Sense UI on top. Flashing CM-13 build on the device will allow you to get close to stock Marshmallow experience.

In addition to the One A9, the CM-13 nightly build is now also available for the first generation Motorola Moto E smartphone. You can download the builds by heading to the Source links below, but before you do that keep in mind that nightlies aren’t usually stable and installation of a custom ROM also voids your handset’s warranty.

Pink Sony Xperia Z5 is now official

The rumored pink color variant of the Sony Xperia Z5 has been made official by the company. Sony was already teasing a pink Xperia device for the last few days, and we were expecting it to be the Z5.

“The new variant uses the same frosted glass finish as the existing phones and combines this with a light dusky pink color palette designed to provide a natural complement to the existing green, white and black options,” the Japanese company said in a blog post.

While Sony said the new variant will be available for purchase starting next month, there was no word on how much it will cost. The company also didn’t explicitly reveal the handset’s launch markets, so we expect it to be available in all the regions where the Z5 line-up is already…

Motorola begins allowing bootloader unlocks on Verizon Moto X (2014)

If you own a Motorola Moto X (2014) on Verizon, here is some good news: the carrier has started allowing bootloader unlocks on the smartphone. The news came courtesy of Motorola Forums Manager.

“Hey, everyone. Just wanted to let you know that we did get the green light to unlock the bootloader on Verizon 2014 Moto X (2nd Gen) devices,” Matt (the forums manager) said, while making it clear that they can’t do this for devices on other carriers.

For those planning to unlock the bootloader for the first time, keep in mind that the process – which allows you to install third-party ROMs – will void the warranty of your device. Plus, there are many other risks, too. Head to the Source 2 link below for all the details, including how to unlock the bootloader on your Motorola device.

Xiaomi Mi 5 is said to arrive in two different versions

Chinese smartphone makers sometimes like to launch their flagships in two different iterations, differently priced based on how much RAM and internal storage they pack. And now Xiaomi seems determined to take this to a new level, if a new rumor out of China is to be believed.

An alleged mobile industry insider is claiming that there will be two hardware versions for the Mi 5. One of them is pictured below, and is the one we’ve seen leaking a lot lately. This comes with 2.5D curved glass both on the front as well as on the back, and with a metal frame. This iteration will apparently come with 1080p screen resolution.

However, there will be a more premium model too, which will have a full metal body and a display with QHD resolution. Interestingly, the screen’s size is said to be the same in both cases.

While this isn’t mentioned, we assume that if Xiaomi will in fact create such differentiation, then the cheaper, glass model will also sport less RAM and storage than the metal one – perhaps 3GB and 32GB compared to 4GB and 64GB.

The Mi 5 should come with a 5.2-inch touchscreen, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 820 SoC at the helm, a fingerprint scanner embedded in the physical Home button on the front, a 16 MP rear camera, a 13 MP selfie snapper, and a 3,600 mAh battery. It will become official on January 21, with sales expected to start on February 8.
