Nexus 6P and Nexus 5X get €80-€100 price cuts in Europe

If you’ve been looking at the Nexus price cuts across the pond with some envy, you’ll be pleased to hear Google brought them to Europe too.

The Huawei Nexus 6P is now €100 off, putting the base 32GB version at €550 (down from the salty €650), while the top-specced 128GB version is €700.

The LG Nexus 5X gets a €80 discount, so that the base 16GB version is €350 and the 32GB option is €400.

This is a limited-time promotion, not a permanent discount. It ends February 12, so you still have a couple of weeks to mull it over.

Note that the UK is getting a different deal – the Nexus 5X comes with a £20 Play Store credit and a free Chromecast. The 6P just gets 90 days of Play Music,

Apple posts record quarterly figures for first quarter of 2016

Apple announced its first quarter financial results for the financial year of 2016, which ended on December 26, 2015.

The company posted record quarterly revenue of $75.9 billion and record quarterly net income or profit of $18.4 billion, the highest in the company’s history. In comparison, Apple earned $74.6 billion revenue and $18 billion net income in the year-ago quarter. International sales accounted for 66% of the quarter’s revenue.

In his statement, CEO Tim Cook attributed the record quarter to the strong sales of iPhone, Apple Watch, and Apple TV. He also said the growth of Apple’s Service business accelerated and the company’s install base crossed one billion active devices, roughly 1/7th the Earth’s population.

However, despite the impressive numbers, Apple’s stock fell after hours, as although the company exceeded the $18.22 billion net income projected figure by analysts, it fell short of the $76.67 projected revenue…

After announcing the Marathon M5 lite last month, Chinese smartphone manufacturer Gionee has unveiled a mini variant of its Marathon M5 smartphone. The device is powered by a Mediatek MT6580 SoC and sports a 5-inch (1280 x 720 pixel resolution) IPS display.

It has 2GB RAM and 16GB expandable internal memory, and packs in a large 4,000 mAh battery. In terms of camera, the M5 mini features an 8MP rear and a 5MP front shooter. Measuring 143.5 x 71 x 9.6mm, the handset runs Android 5.1 Lollipop with Amigo UI 3.1 on top. Connectivity options include 3G, GPS, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi.

Commenting on the launch, the company’s Nigeria Marketing Director Somoye Habeeb said, “Gionee focuses on innovation, efficiency and affordability in ways that other brands don’t. Having received a warm reception from the Nigerian market when we introduced the Gionee M5 a few months ago, Gionee is following up with the M5 Mini.”

“The Gionee M5 Mini as the name implies, is a compact version of the M5. It is just as effective and stylish, but more affordable. It can be considered a sequel to the highly durable M5, and is the latest phone to be released in Nigeria,” he added.

There was, however, no word on the M5 mini’s price.

New Hangouts update lets you reply directly from message notifications

Google has started pushing a new update to its Hangouts for Android app that bumps the version to 7.0 and brings along new features like quick replies and conversation shortcuts on home screen, as well as some design tweaks.

With the new update, the Hangouts app now lets you reply directly from within message notifications without opening the app itself, saving you time in case you need to quickly compose and send replies.

Next up, the update also includes the ability to create shortcuts to conversations on the home screen. The new Save to home screen option added to the overflow menu does this trick for you.

Finally, the updated app also features some design changes, replacing checkboxes with toggles and giving the sharing dialog box a more Material look. The update is currently rolling out, so it may take some time before it hits your device.

Samsung Gear S2 Classic Rose Gold and Platinum now on sale in US

Just a couple of days ago, Samsung announced the global launch of the Gear S2 Classic New Edition, with China becoming the first country where the device was released. Now, the premium Rose Gold and Platinum finish watches are on sale in the US, although not officially.

Both the variants are currently listed on Amazon US, which is selling them for $450. If you compare, this is $100 more than what the regular Classic model officially costs in the US – Amazon is currently selling it for $319 though.

However, what’s worth mentioning here is that you won’t get these new variants anytime soon as the retailer has mentioned a shipping time-frame of 1 to 2 months. A quick look at Samsung’s official US website reveals that the company will officially start selling Rose Gold and Platinum models in the country sometime next month.

This means that those purchasing the Galaxy S7 family of smartphones (which are expected to be unveiled at MWC next month) from Samsung will be able to pay in monthly installments. In addition, they will also be able to upgrade their device every year.

For those who aren’t aware, Apple announced the iPhone Upgrade Program at the iPhone 6s/6s Plus unveiling event last year. It requires you to sign a two-year financing agreement and pay a little over $32 a month. In return, you get a new, unlocked iPhone every year directly from the company. The program also includes Apple…
