Jolla tablet is officially dead, backers to get full refund

Today Jolla finally gave up on the Jolla Tablet and it’s officially pronounced as dead. All efforts of bringing the slate to live are being abandoned, and company’s next concern will be refunding its Indiegogo backers.

The Jolla slate was crowdfunded via Indiegogo at the end of 2014, and it was backed by more than 21,000 people with north of $2.5 million. The Jolla Tablet was demoed at the MWC in 2015, but later it faced numerous difficulties.

Previously Jolla had to lay off half of its staff, and the slate’s fate was on the bubble. While eventually Jolla managed to secure funding for the slate, the financial troubles had inflicted irreparable damages on the supply chain.

Jolla’s executives have tried their best to push the tablet into the market, but apparently it isn’t possible.

With the Tablet confirmed as not happening, Jolla’s efforts will be focused on refunding its fans and on the Sailfish OS future. Only 540 units of the Tablet were manufactured, and those will be shipped to the first backers.

The first refunds will happen by the end of Q1 this year, while the rest should be completed by the end of 2016, depending on Jolla’s financial situation.

Currently Jolla is trying to make money from licensing the Sailfish OS to manufacturers and it should be its primary source of money. According to the statement, there are lots of licensing negotiations with different players happening at the moment.

Fairphone 2 with Sailfish OS 2.0 is one of those projects, and its pre-orders are open.

Le Max Pro gets certified in China, Snapdragon 820 is coming

Chinese telecommunication authority TENAA has greenlit the LeTV Le Max Pro, officially the first smartphone to feature the Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 chipset. With that hurdle cleared, the Le Max Pro is now one step closer to market launch.

LeTV’s latest and greatest comes with a 6.33-inch display with QHD resolution in a reasonably compact 167 x 83.4 x 8.95mm body. Weight is a manageable 201g, and while TENAA doesn’t disclose such specs, we’d expect battery capacity to be the same 3,400mAh as in the Le Max (non-Pro).

Chipset aside, the phablet is also equipped with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage, at least in the version that was provided to the regulator. As earlier leaks revealed, the primary camera is a 21MP unit, while on the front there’s a 4MP shooter. Oddly enough, video recording is capped at 1080p.

The price of the Le Max Pro is expected to be around $535, but no specifics on availability have been revealed so far. That said, with regulatory approval granted, the smartphone should arrive sooner rather than later – after all it needs to beat the Samsung Galaxy S7 (Snapdragon 820 in some versions, at least), now confirmed to debut on February 21.

HTC Desire 530 listed online, February 23 launch date

A potential HTC Desire 530 smartphone has been listed on a Dutch retailer’s website and it’s the first time we hear about it. The listing doesn’t mention any specs, but does reveal a few key points on the Desire 530’s release.

For one, its price will be just above €190, positioning it in the lower mid-range segment. Additionally, the retailer expects to have it in stock on February 23, hinting at an MWC announcement a couple of days earlier. The last bit of the Desire 530 puzzle, uncovered today, is the color options, of which there will be at least two – Stratus White and Graphite Gray.

HTC Desire 526

The HTC Desire 530 will likely be sold alongside the existing Desire 526, released last August, rather than replace it. The current model comes with a 4.7-inch qHD display (540×960 pixels, not to be mistaken with QHD) and a modest Snapdragon 210 inside. With 8GB of storage and 1.5GB of RAM it’s not exactly a powerhouse, and don’t expect the 530 to be one either.

Windows 10 inches towards a 12% market share, now ahead of XP

Windows 10 has just pulled ahead of both Windows XP and Windows 8.1 for the first time in terms of market share. The analysts from NetMarketShare now put Microsoft’s latest OS version at 11.85% market share, when XP stands at 11.42%, and 8.1 is at 10.40%.

Windows 7 remains in a dominant position, running on more than half the desktops in the world. Its 52.47% share in January, however, marks a downward trend in its share. Approaching its 20th anniversary, Windows 98 can still be found running on the occasional PC, but it’s not enough to make it past the 0.01% mark, unlike Windows 2000, which has coasted around, but above that number for a while now.

Meanwhile Mac OS X 10.10 and 10.11 have both climbed in market share reaching a combined value of 5.77%, versus 5.22% the month before.

Xiaomi Mi 5 to get a Windows 10 variant as well

We already know that Xiaomi’s upcoming Mi 5 flagship smartphone will be officially unveiled later this month. We also know that the device will be available for media preview at this year’s MWC. But, in what could come as a surprise for many, we’re now hearing that the handset could have a Windows 10 variant, too.

Aside from the OS, the Win 10 variant is said to be identical to its Android cousin. The rumor also suggests that the device will be made official at a simultaneous event in China and Barcelona (during this year’s MWC), alongside the Android model.

While the news definitely comes as a surprise, this would not be the first time Xiaomi and Microsoft are partnering – last year they signed an agreement to provide Windows 10 Technical Preview support on the Mi 4, following which the ROM was released in December. The Mi Pad 2 64GB also comes in a Win 10 variant, although that’s the full desktop OS, rather than the mobile one.

As for the Mi 5, while most of its specs is in rumors currently, what’s been confirmed so far is that the handset is powered by Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 820 chipset, and offers support for dual-SIM functionality and NFC. The company’s Senior Vice President, Liwan Jiang, has reportedly also confirmed that the phone will sport a 1080p display, instead of the rumored QHD one.

Samsung Galaxy S7 passes through China’s 3C certification authority

Although there have already been reports that Samsung’s Galaxy S7 flagship smartphone will land in China sometime in March, we’re yet to hear any confirmation on this. Now we have some sort of unofficial data pointing that way as three variants of the device have recently cleared China Compulsory Certification (3C).

The said variants carry model numbers of SM-G9308, SM-G9300, and SM-G9350 – while the first two are Galaxy S7 models, the third one is Galaxy S7 edge. All three feature support for fast charging at 9V 1.67A and 5V 2A.

Sadly, as is the case usually, nothing else was revealed by the 3C listings. However, we’re hopeful that detailed specs will be revealed when the models pass through China’s TENAA agency.

In case you missed it, Samsung just officially confirmed that the flagship device will be unveiled on February…

Despite missed sales target, Xiaomi was still at top in China last year

Despite falling short of its 2015 sales target, Xiaomi was still the top smartphone manufacturer in China for the year, according to a new Wall Street Journal report which cited “early figures” from market research firms Canalys and Strategy Analytics.

According to Canalys, Xiaomi claimed 15.2% of the market in China. Huawei came in second with 14.7%, while Apple was third with 12.5% share.

The report cited Chinese analysts as saying that brisk sales of the company’s Redmi Note 3 smartphone – which they said comes with “competitive pricing and trendy features” – along with the end-of-year sales season were some of the main reasons that helped Xiaomi claim the spot.

They also predicted that in 2016, Xiaomi will have to face a tough fight from competitors like Huawei, which shipped over 100 million smartphones in 2015 – Xiaomi, for comparison, shipped only 70 million.

For those who aren’t already aware, Xiaomi’s next flagship smartphone – the Mi 5 – will be unveiled on February…

Possible next-gen Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 variants spotted on Zauba

Two new tablets from Samsung have been spotted listed on Zauba, a website which tracks India’s import and export. The listings for these devices reveal that they carry model numbers of SM-T719 and SM-T813, respectively.

Another crucial information that the listings reveal is the display sizes. While the SM-T719 sports an 8-inch screen, the SM-T813 has a 9.7 inch display.

Given that the Galaxy Tab S2 series from last year has 8-inch and 9.7-inch variants (with model numbers SM-T710/SM-T715 and SM-T810/ SM-T815), these new devices could very well be the next generation tablets in the series.

Aside from the specs, the Zauba listings also gives an idea about the price tag the new tablets will carry – the SM-T719 is listed at INR 13,817 (around $215), while the SM-T813 is priced at INR 17,271 (around $255). Keep in mind, however, that pricing information on Zauba is not always precise.

It’s official: Samsung to unveil Galaxy S7 on February 21

Turns out the rumors were correct. Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy S7 flagship smartphone will be unveiled on Sunday, February 21 (19:00 CET) in Barcelona, just a day before MWC 2016 officially kicks off.

The South Korean company has also posted a teaser video on YouTube (embedded below) that confirms the same. The video, however, doesn’t reveal much – it just shows a man wearing the company’s Gear VR headset.

“Get ready to rethink what a phone can do,” Samsung said in the text accompanying the video. “#TheNextGalaxy will be revealed at Unpacked on February 21.” The Galaxy S7 has already been the subject of endless rumors and leaks. It is expected to be launched in the US and Europe on March…
