A new update for the offline map data on Windows 10 available now

One of the things many people love about Windows 10 is the option for voice-guided offline navigation around the world. Microsoft has licensed HERE maps as part of the deal with Nokia and has been using them on its devices ever since.

The Maps app on Windows offers you offline mode, and you can download country maps for free and use them abroad free of roaming data.

Microsoft seeds occasional updates for the offline maps. Such update is available now, and the Windows 10 users can find it Settings>System>Offline Maps. If you want to use the latest maps with the most recent updates, you should go and update yours.

The update can be found on Windows 10 and Windows 10 Mobile. We can’t confirm it on Windows Phone 8 and Windows 8 though. Feel free to share your experience in our comments…

Samsung confirms Galaxy S7 edge, wide and narrow edge features will be supported

Either a genuine mistake, or part of the pre-launch teasing process (our money is on the latter), a Samsung website now lists the Galaxy S7 Edge in a table detailing the different uses of the curved screen. Keeping the Galaxy S6 edge and S6 edge+ company, the yet-to-be-released model (announcement confirmed for February 21) will be able to do the exact same stuff as its older brethren.

With the screen on, the trio can display either the narrow type strips available since the S6 edge’s inception, or the wide one-third of the screen type introduced with the Marshmallow update. With the screen off it’s the usual clock and notifications feed.

And if we were hoping to get something else out of the slip-up, like the name for example, tough luck – it’s a bit of a naming mess. The existing Galaxy S6 edge is officially spelled with a small ‘e’, and the S6 edge+ formally gets a symbol instead of a ‘Plus’. So that remains to be settled, for those that care.

Samsung Galaxy Tab E 7.0 gets FCC approval

Earlier today, a slew of new tablet offers was spotted on a US-based retailer website, suggesting they are heading toward a release. The devices in question include the Galaxy Tab E 7.0, Tab E 8.0, Tab E Lite and Tab E Lite Kids. After the 8-inch one already obtained an FCC certificate, now it is the smaller Tab E 7.0’s turn.

According to the document, the tablet will have a 7-inch display, which in case the name wasn’t clear about it. The actual model number listed for the device is either SM-T280 or its alternative version SM-T285 and its exact dimensions are 186mm x 117mm x 180mm with a non-removable battery. Other info, shared with FCC is scarce and only includes mentions of Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, both quite expected.

Luckily, another recent leak provides some more insight on the hardware of the Galaxy Tab 7.0, or at least the SM-T285, said to be the network-enabled one with 4G. It will be powered by a 1.3GHz Spreadtrum SC8830 chipset with a Mali-400 MP2 GPU, and have a resolution of 1280×800 pixels. There will be 1.5GB of RAM and 8GB of expandable internal memory. It will have two cameras – a 5MP main one and a 0.3MP one on the front.

MediaTek Helio X20 allegedly plagued by overheating issues

Remember the Snapdragon 810? If you do, chances are that you associate it with the infamous overheating issues. That reputation has plagued the chip almost constantly throughout its lifecycle and it was the major reason behind Samsung’s decision to skip using the SoC on its Galaxy S6 line. Now, in an unfortunate twist of faith, industry sources have begun accusing the upcoming MediaTek Helio X20 of the same kind of thermomanagement issues.

Naturally this is yet to be confirmed by any official source, so don’t take this too seriously. That being said, the report claims that the issues with the Helio X20 is present and was enough to deter Xiaomi, HTC and Lenovo and make them cancel their Helio X20 smartphones.

If you don’t remember the Helio X20 and what is so special about it, it is officially the first 10-core mobile SoC. It uses an innovative tri-cluster design, which is a first in the smartphone realm as well.

For MediaTek’s sake, we sincerely hope the rumors get debunked and soon, before we have a repeat of the unfortunate Snapdragon 810.

Motorola offering freebies with Moto 360 and Moto G, discounted X Pure too

In time for Valentine’s day shopping, or just this month’s shopping if you’re the forever alone type, Motorola is offering some deals on popular products.

In the US, the most obvious monetary benefit comes with the Moto X Pure Edition, more specifically the Limited edition, designed by Jonathan Adler. Usually retailing at $475, the fancy designs are now available for $400.

If the Moto X Pure sits too high in the company’s lineup for you needs, you can get a Moto G (3rd gen) and grab two additional rear shells. And if you’ve got your mind set on the Moto 360 smartwatch, you can now get a free leather strap with the purchase of a watch with a stainless steel bracelet.

In Europe, at least the UK and Germany, the company is offering a discount on the Moto G and Moto 360 bundle. In the UK we’re talking £80, while Germans are getting €130 off.

The US deals are active now until February 16, so they’re good for last-minute shoppers. Europeans only have a small window until February 5, so it takes some more careful planning this side of the Atlantic.

IDC: Apple retains tablet leadership in 2015, but sales decline

Apple retained its position as the world’s No.1 tablet vendor for the last quarter, although year-on-year sales saw a 24.8% decline, according to latest data from market research firm IDC. The Cupertino-based company shipped a total of 16.1 million tablets in Q4 2015, down from 21.4 million units shipped in the same quarter of 2014.

Samsung came in second with 9 million units shipped, down from 11 million units the company shipped in Q4 2014, which is an 18.1% decline. The South Korean company’s market share stood at 13.7%, compared to 24.5% share of the market Apple claimed.

Amazon, Lenovo, and Huawei rounded up the top five with 7.9%, 4.8%, and 3.4% market shares, respectively. What’s worth noticing here is the Amazon’s annual growth of 175.7%, something the report attributed to the company’s latest Kindle iteration, which it said was a runaway hit this holiday season.

Talking about 2015 as a whole, while Apple and Samsung retained the top two spots with 24% and 16.2% market share, respectively, Lenovo climbed to the third spot with 5.4% share. Asus and Huawei rounded up the top five 3.4% and 3.1% of the market, respectively.

Overall, the worldwide tablet market – which includes slate tablets as well as detachable tablets – continued to decline, with a negative year-on-year growth of 13.7%. However, separately, the market for detachable tablets was up, with shipments reaching an all-time high of 8.1 million devices.

“This quarter was unique as we had new detachables in the market from all three of the major platform players,” said IDC’s Senior Research Analyst Jitesh Ubrani. “Despite lukewarm reviews, the iPad Pro was the clear winner this season as it was the top selling detachable, surpassing notable entries from Microsoft and other PC vendors.”

“It’s also important to note that the transition towards detachable tablets has presented positive opportunities for both Apple and Microsoft. However, Google’s recent foray into this space has been rather lackluster as the Android platform will require a lot more refinement to achieve any measurable success.”

“One of the biggest reasons why detachables are growing so fast is because end users are seeing those devices as PC replacements,” said Jean Philippe Bouchard, Research Director, Tablets at IDC.

“We believe Apple sold just over two million iPad Pros while Microsoft sold around 1.6 million Surface devices, a majority of which were Surface Pro and not the more affordable Surface 3. With these results, it’s clear that price is not the most important feature considered when acquiring a detachable – performance…

Samsung Galaxy S7 camera to protrude just 0.8mm

Seasoned leakster OnLeaks has outed a couple of schemanics, which show that Samsung has made subtle changes to the back design of the Galaxy S7 compared to the Galaxy Note5. Both phones have slightly curved backs, but whereas the Galaxy Note5 sports curves only on the left and right sides, the Galaxy S7 will sport them from each side on every edge of the back.

Additionally, another schematics snapshot shows that the Galaxy S7 will have a camera bump, but not the same as the Galaxy S6. Samsung has tried to reduce the bump on the back and for the Galaxy S7 it’s believed to be 0.8mm compared to the 1.7mm of the Galaxy S6’s camera.

Yesterday, @evleaks leaked an alleged press photo of the Galaxy S7’s back.

Previous leaks have suggested the phone will have four versions: Galaxy S7, Galaxy S7 Plus, Galaxy S7 edge, and Galaxy S7 edge Plus. In terms of specifications, expect a choice between the Exynos 8890 and Snapdragon 820 chipsets. Other rumors point a brand new 12MP 1/2.0″ sensor.

Samsung will reveal the Galaxy S7 on Sunday, February 21 in Barcelona. That’s just a day before MWC 2016 officially kicks off.

Microsoft Lumia 850 photographed in the wild, looks just like the renders

The Microsoft Lumia 850 starred in a few 3D renders late last year, but now there are photos of the actual device.

There was a lot of uncertainty about the screen size, but the latest info points to 5.4″ in size. Above it is a front-facing flash and what is probably an iris scanner for Windows Hello.

Microsoft Lumia 850 (allegedly)

Interestingly, the microUSB 2.0 port (and it does look like 2.0 rather than the new Type-C) is on top, while the 3.5mm audio jack is on the bottom. Things usually go the other way around.

Anyway, the Microsoft Lumia 950 is expected to have a Snapdragon 617 chipset, like the HTC One A9 and the Samsung Galaxy A5 (that one actually uses S615, but close enough).

Xiaomi: US Mobile is not an authorized seller of our products

Yesterday we posted some exciting news about Xiaomi and Meizu for the US citizens. US Mobile, which uses T-Mobile’s network, has begun offering selected Xiaomi and Meizu smartphones.

We probably had to raise some suspicions because those Xiaomi and Meizu orders were fulfilling by a third party, yet the good news overwhelmed us.

Today Xiaomi provided us with an official statement, and it says the US Mobile and its partners are not authorized sellers of any Xiaomi products. Here is the full statement:

“Xiaomi only offers a small selection of accessories for sale in the US through Mi.com. There are no plans to sell smartphones through any authorized distributors in the US. US Mobile is not authorized to sell Xiaomi products in the US.”

With the opening of Mi.com for the US market, Xiaomi was very clear it will offer a variety of accessories, but not smartphones as it had no plans for US…
