Gold Nexus 6P now $50 off at BestBuy

The Huawei-made Nexus 6P is now $50 off at BestBuy, following Google’s identical price cut in its own store. The offer is valid for the Gold color option, and applies to both the 32GB and 64GB versions.

The base model now costs $449.99, while double the storage comes at $499.99. If you want the top model with 128GB, however, you’re stuck with one of the other color options, and neither Graphite nor Aluminum gets the discount, so you’d be paying the full $649.99.

If you do decide to take advantage of the offer and get a Gold Nexus 6P, BestBuy will also throw in a $25 gift card. It’s worth mentioning that while $50 off is a nice deal, the Nexuses often get similar discounts, so if you miss this promo, there may very well be another one down the road.

Galaxy S6/S6 edge Marshmallow update begins rolling out in Europe

While we already knew it was imminent, the only question was exactly when. Well, the good news is that Android 6.0 for the Samsung Galaxy S6/S6 edge has finally started rolling out in Europe, with Poland – as usual – becoming the first European country where the update is now available.

Carrier T-Mobile is currently pushing the update to its variants of both flagship devices in the region. Worldwide, Poland is the second country where the update has rolled out – units in the company’s home country of South Korea started getting the update at the end of the last month.

If you are a Galaxy S6/S6 edge owner in Poland, you should see an OTA update notification soon, if not already. However, if you’re feeling impatient, you can also manually check for the update by heading to your handset’s settings menu.

Nokia now owns 91% of Alcatel-Lucent, merger underway

Back in April last year Nokia announced it will acquire Alcatel-Lucent for €15.6 billion (an all-stock deal).

Now the Finnish company has announced that it controls 91% of Alcatel-Lucent shares after the second round of the transaction. The two companies have already started combining operations.

Nokia will need 95% before it can complete the acquisition.

By the way, “Alcatel” here is a different company than the one that makes the phones – those are made by TCL, which licenses the name.

Lenovo Vibe P1 Pro goes official as P1 Turbo

Back in August 2015, Lenovo teased a Pro version of the Vibe P1 handset and the device was even featured in a rather extensive hands-on photo session. However, a lot of time passed since then with practically no word on the upgraded model, up until today, when the learn that the device was quietly made official under the P1 Turbo moniker.

Despite the name change the official specs match up almost perfectly with the suggested ones from last year. The Vibe P1 Turbo is equipped with a 5.5-inch FullHD display and runs on a Snapdragon 615 chip. Sadly, it has only 2GB of RAM, instead of the initially hinted 3GB. Built-in storage is 32GB, with a MicroSD card slot for up to 128GB more.

The centerpiece of the P1 Turbo is the large 5,000 mAh battery, which supports the 24W Quick Charge 2.0. The camera setup consists of a 13MP main shooter with a dual-LED flash and a 5MP one on the front. The P1 Turbo also has Dual-SIM support and LTE. A fingerprint reader is also on board. Interestingly enough, the phone is said to boot the slightly outdated Android 5.1 Lollipop out of the box.

The handset is up for pre-order now for INR 399 000 and color options include Silver, Graphite Gray and Gold.

Opera receives $1.2B takeover proposal; deal likely to happen

Popular Web browser company Opera has received a buyout offer from a Chinese consortium. The offer values the Norwegian company at NOK 10.5 billion ($1.2 billion), which is reportedly 53% more than its market value before the acquisition rumors broke.

Unsurprisingly, Opera seems to be interested in the offer, with the company’s board unanimously recommending that shareholders approve the acquisition bid.

“There is strong strategic and industrial logic to the acquisition of Opera by the Consortium,” Opera CEO Lars Boilesen said. “The Consortium’s ownership will strengthen Opera’s position to serve our users and partners with even greater innovation and to accelerate our plans of expansion and growth.”

The companies that are part of the consortium include mobile game developer Kunlun, mobile antivirus software maker Qihoo360 Technology, as well as investment firms Golden Brick and Yonglian.

Samsung Galaxy S7 photographed in Gold

The Samsung Galaxy S7 have been photographed a couple of times, but both were painted black. Here’s a new leak that shows the upcoming flagship (both front and back) in Gold.

The photos are head on, so you can’t quite see it, but the back has curved left and right sides on the back, similar to the Galaxy Note5. Also, the camera will stick out just 0.8mm, a lower profile than the 1.7mm of the S6.

Not pictured, but apparently, the USB port on the bottom of the phone is the old-school micro 2.0 type.

Oculus will offer PC bundles for the Rift, starting at $1,499

There’s no going around it, for most enthusiastic fans, the production version of the Oculus Rift came with one major disappointment – the $599 price tag. And sadly, even if you decide to fork up the money, there is also the matter of specs requirements for your rig and primarily having a beastly GTX 900 series GPU, which isn’t exactly free either.

If you really have your heart set on the VR headset, as promised, Oculus has come up with a way to at least slightly dampen the blow in the worst case scenario where you have to pick up a new system as well. The answer is a bundle featuring an “Oculus-ready” PC, starting at $1,499.

For that you get the complete Oculus Rift package, which includes the headset, a sensor, a remote, an Xbox One controller and two games – EVE: Valkyrie and Lucky’s Tale. And the particular deal also buys you a new ASUS G11CD-B11 desktop with an Intel Core i5 and 4GB GTX 970 GPU – capable of handling the massive rendering loads of VR.

Of course, there are other bundles, some crossing the $3,000 mark with an Alienware PC. There are also Dell builds available. Most of the packages seem to offer around $50 off the Oculus itself and about $100 or so off the PC. Pre-orders are set to start on February 16 at 8:00 PST and the deals can be picked up at Best Buy, Amazon and the Microsoft store.

Huawei launches Y6 Pro with 13MP camera, 4000mAh battery

Huawei has outed a Pro variant of the Y6 smartphone it launched last year. While the Y6 was the international variant of the Honor 4A, the Y6 Pro is the global variant of the Enjoy 5, which was released just a few months ago in China.

Specs-wise, the Y6 Pro is powered by a MediaTek MT6735P SoC with quad-core 1.3GHz CPU, and sports a 5-inch HD display. It comes with 2GB RAM and 16GB of internal memory, and packs in a large 4,000mAh battery.

In terms of camera, the handset features a 13MP rear unit and a 5MP front shooter. Measuring 143.1 x 71.8 x 9.7mm and weighing in at 160g, the phone offers dual-SIM support and runs Android 5.1 Lollipop with Emotion UI 3.1 Lite on top. Connectivity options include Bluetooth 4.0, WI-FI 802.11 b/g/n, Wi-Fi hotspot, and Wi-Fi direct.

The device comes with a metal frame and what the company’s calling a “water-ripple” design. Available in Gold, White and Gray color options, the Y6 Pro price remains unknown. There’s also no information on when it will be available in global markets.

Opera Apps Club is is an “all you can eat” app store for Android

Opera, once known mostly for its browser, has been diversifying its activities. Its latest venture is Opera Apps Club, a Netflix-like, all you can eat subscription service.

Basically, you sign up for the Club and can download any app from the 150 global and local publishers and developers. Payment is done through the carrier, so no need for credit cards (great in emerging markets where plastic money is rare).

Ads are removed from ad-supported apps and you get credit for in-app purchases. 34 carriers are supported currently and Opera can customize the experience for each carrier.

The app is based on Bemobi (which Opera acquired in 2015) and promises to reach 500 million customers, giving publishers and developers a new way to monetize their content.

One key piece of info is missing though – how much is it?
