Latest Apple ads focus on Live Photos and 3D Touch, Aubrey Plaza stars in one

Apple’s marketing crew often teams up with celebrities for its promo materials, and in the past we’ve seen Jamie Foxx and Penelope Cruz, to name two. It’s Aubrey Plaza’s turn in today’s round of video ads for the iPhone 6s/6s Plus.

The Parks and Rec star finds out she’s missed her plane while peeking into her flight info thanks to 3D touch. The pressure-sensitive display lets you do everything faster, Apple says, from making calls to couch shopping.

The second ad is all about live photos. It starts off with the mandatory cat shot, and there’s also a kid making a snow angel, but no time travel, because it’s dangerous. We’ve been…

Leaked video gives us a first glimpse of the OnePlus 3

Despite its modest product portfolio, OnePlus is still persistently making headlines, mostly due to an ingenious mix of viral marketing and intriguing products that tend to fuel fan interest. The OnePlus 2 has been around for a few months now and so understandably the OEM is working hard and already preparing for its next “flagship killer” offer.

We haven’t seen or heard a lot about the OnePlus 3yet, apart from a couple of low-res renders, so a newly unearthed product clip is definitely an interesting find. The short video offers a glimpse at the design of the upcoming handset, or at least a render of it and offers a few bits of extra information.

From the looks of it, the OnePlus 3 will be a truly gorgeous device, with a slick metal frame – a bit curvier than the one on its predecessors. Interestingly enough, the signature sandstone back, that made both the OnePlus One and OnePlus 2 instantly recognizable, seems to be replaced with a brushed metal back. However, it might still be an option for the OnePlus 3 and part of the manufacturer’s experimentation with different materials, like the ceramic on the OnePlus X.

The video also suggests a dual-tone LED flash on the back and possibly another one on the front. The USB port seems to be Type-C, which was to be expected and although is is hard to tell, there might actually be stereo speakers on the front of the unit, just like a previous rumor suggested.

Your browser does not support the video tag.

Other alleged specs on the OnePlus 3 include a 5.5-inch 1080p display (with QHD also a possibility). The handset should be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 SoC and have two memory options – 4GB of RAM pus 16GB of storage or a whopping 5GB of RAM and 64GB of storage (although the latter RAM capacity seems too odd of a number and won’t likely come to pass).

An upgrade to battery capacity is expected as well, possibly to 3,500 mAh. And the camera setup should consist of a 13MP main shooter and a 5MP selfie one. According to industry sources, the OnePlus 3 could be launched in the summer of…

Freedom 251 ordering suspended as website can’t handle traffic

A smartphone costing $4 was always going to be a hit, but Indian company Ringing Bells had to learn the hard way exactly how much so. At 600,000 hits per second (by the company’s own account), its website couldn’t handle all the traffic and orders had to be suspended. Fret not though, Ringing Bells is working on a solution and promises that all will be back to normal within 24 hours.

Freedom 251 is the world’s cheapest smartphone and at less than $4 (or INR 251, hence the name) we can’t see that record getting broken any time soon. That amount of cash gets you a 4-inch qHD display, quad-core processor, a gig of RAM and Lollipop, so you are getting plenty of bang for your few bucks.

No wonder then that the Freedom 251 broke the internet when it launched yesterday. At two points in time the search term was used more than three times as much as both Apple and Samsung combined, and no Kardashian could come close to its popularity.

The initial madness has now quieted down a little, and interest in the Freedom 251 has plummeted compared to established brands, but they still can’t match its numbers. Now, if only you could order…

The Microsoft Surface Book officially on sale in the UK

If you’re the type of guy that craves a powerful and portable laptop you can easily have on you at all times, then Microsoft’s new Surface Book surely caught your attention after its announcement last October. As the company’s own head of devices stated, it is:

Ounce for ounce the most powerful 13-inch laptop

Overall, we are definitely inclined to believe the statement, with specs for the hybrid device going all the way up to a 6th generation Intel Core i7 processor, 16GB of RAM and a discreet NVIDIA GeForce GPU. Pre-orders started at the beginning of January in many places, including the UK, but today official sales have finally kicked off.

Prices remain unchanged ranging from GBP 1,299 for an entry Core i5, 8GB of RAM, 128GB storage and no GPU one, all the way up to an eye-watering GBP 2,249 for the aforementioned top model.

You can order the Surface Book from the Microsoft store, linked in the source, as well as a few other retailers, like Amazon, Currys / PC World and John Lewis. As a final note, if you do intend to spoil yourself and shell out for the transforming PC, it is worth mentioning that many users have been experiencing Windows 10 related power issues with it – a point that might be worth looking into before the purchase.

CAT S60: world’s first smartphone with built-in thermal camera

The new CAT S60 is more than a smartphone – it’s a professional tool. It’s the first smartphone to feature an integrated thermal camera.

It can measure the temperature of objects from 15m-30m (50ft-100ft) away and can even see through smoke. It can, for example, be used by firefighters to look for people in a smoke-filled building or just a contractor to check your insulation.

The thermal camera is courtesy of Flir and shows 640 x 480px thermal video. That’s actually pretty good, the Seek Thermal only manages 206 x 156px.

Anyway, the CAT S60 goes beyond casual smartphone toughness. If you batten down the hatches (closing the mouth and earpieces with the yellow covers), it can go under 5m of water. Otherwise, the limit is 2m.

CAT dropped the phone 26 times from 1.8m (6ft) to make sure it survives hard hits. The display is covered with 1mm Gorilla Glass 4 (normal phones get 0.4mm) and very bright – 540nits. The touchscreen works with gloves, of course.

You also get a beefy 3,800mAh battery to last you a long day at work and a 105dB loudspeaker. The rest of the CAT S60 put it in the mid-range – 4.7″ 720p screen, Snapdragon 617 with 3GB of RAM and 32GB storage. The phone runs Android 6.0 Marshmallow and offers 4G LTE connectivity. There’s also a 13MP main camera, 5MP selfie cam.

The CAT S60 will be shown off at the MWC and will retail later this year for $600/€650. Keep in mind that a Flir One (a smartphone add-on thermal camera) alone costs $250.

The EOS 80D is the Canon’s newest mid-range DSLR, and successor to the previous 70D. It seems the company is finally listening to feedback, as the 80D features both, still and video related enhancements.

Canon EOS 80D

The 80D has a new 24.2 megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor. Combined with the new DIGIC 6 processor, it is capable of an ISO range of 100-12800 (expandable to 25600) and a burst rate of 7 fps.

The AI Servo AF II system has been improved with a 7560-pixel RGB+IR metering sensor for better tracking of moving subjects. The viewfinder has been enhanced to support the larger AF spread and now offers approximately 100% viewfinder coverage.

Now coming to the video part, the 80D can now record videos in up to 1080p60 in MP4 format in either ALL-I or IPB compression with optional embedded time code. The camera also features a headphone jack, a microphone jack, and a built-in stereo microphone with manual audio level adjustment.

Canon also announced a new EF-S18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Lens with a Nano USM focusing motor that combines the speed of Canon’s USM lenses with the silence of STM lenses. There is also a new Power Zoom Adapter PZ-E1, which lets you electronically control the zoom on lenses such as the new EF-S18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM in smooth steps, which is perfect for video use. It can also be controlled remotely using the Canon Camera Connect app. Canon also announced a new DM-E1 directional stereo microphone.
