Uber reportedly loses out on bid to buy Nokia’s HERE mapping business

Uber has lost out on its bid to acquire Nokia's HERE mapping business, according to a New York Times report. The ride-sharing start-up had offered $3 billion.

As per the report, the unit might be sold to a consortium of German auto-makers, something which is in-line with what Bloomberg reported last month. However, negotiations are ongoing and a deal is not yet confirmed – Nokia is expecting at least $4 billion, while the auto-makers are looking to acquire the unit for less.

The report also notes that there is a possibility that Uber, which acquired San Jose-based mapping technology start-up deCarta back in March this year, could jump back…

Facebook reportedly working on its own digital assistant

Facebook is developing its own virtual assistant, according to a report from The Information. Internally codenamed as Moneypenny, it will be available as a feature within the company's Messenger app.

However, unlike some of the popular digital personal assistants like Apple's Siri, Google Now, and Microsoft's Cortana, the Facebook's offering won't focus on productivity. According to the report, Moneypenny will instead let users "ask real people for help researching and ordering products and services, among other tasks."

There is currently no information on when the functionality will be released. The report comes just a couple of weeks after Facebook rolled out Messenger's peer-to-peer payments feature to everyone in the US.

Google’s Inbox app now suggests you create a reminder instead of emailing yourself

The Inbox app by Google, which was launched back in October last year, now offers you an option to create a reminder whenever you try sending an email to yourself.

As you can see in the screen-shot above, the reminder option pops up as soon as the app detects your own email address in the 'To' field. Should you choose the option, whatever text is there in the email's subject and body gets transferred to the reminder.

This comes over a month after Google opened the app to everyone and updated it with various new features, including Trip Bundles and Undo…

HTC Grip smartband gets Bluetooth certification, could be launched soon

The HTC Grip fitness tracking smartband, which was unveiled by the company back in March at this year's Mobile World Congress (MWC), has received Bluetooth certification from the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG).

At the time of its unveiling, HTC had said that the $199 fitness band would be available in the United States in spring, but that never happened. However, with the device now receiving Bluetooth certification, it's safe to assume that it would be released soon.

Aimed at fitness enthusiast and pro athletes, the Grip sports a 1.8-inch PM-OLED display with 32 x 160px resolution, and runs a proprietary software. It packs in a 100mAh battery, which is good for 5 hours with the GPS on and 2-3 days with the GPS off. There's also an accelerometer, a gyroscope and compass, as well as a light sensor. The smartband is compatible with Android 4.3+ and iOS…

Sprint’s Samsung Galaxy Note Edge now receiving Android 5.1

Many Samsung smartphones on many different carriers have already received the update to Android 5.1 Lollipop, but now it's time for Sprint's version of the Galaxy Note Edge to be the lucky one.

Interestingly, this might actually be the first Android 5.1 update to roll out for the Galaxy Note Edge across the globe. So Sprint has really worked well with Samsung on this release, it seems.

Undoubtedly, Galaxy Note Edge units sold unlocked or bought from other carriers should also receive the new bits in due course. As for Sprint's version, the over-the-air rollout has commenced today.

As always, it's a staged delivery system, so it may take a few days for all of Sprint's devices to pop up that update notification to their owners. After applying the update, you'll be on software version N915PVPU4COFE.

Along with the OS upgrade to the 5.1 iteration of Google's mobile operating system, you'll also get a bunch of various bug fixes and enhancements.

Huawei Watch stops by the FCC, might finally launch soon

Huawei's first smartwatch running Android Wear was initially unveiled way back at MWC at the beginning of March. Since then, we've heard various rumors about its pricing, and even that it may have gotten delayed until September or October.

Now though the wearable has been put through the paces of the FCC, receiving the much needed certification from that agency. This could in fact mean that we might be fast approaching the launch date for the Huawei Watch.

However, we still can't be sure when that will be. One thing is clear: we're now in the "around the middle of the year" time frame that the Chinese company originally mentioned when talking about its smartwatch's release.

The FCC visit has confirmed that the Huawei Watch has a 300 mAh battery and support for 802.11n Wi-Fi connections.
