Dropbox adds support for USB key authentication

Dropbox added support for USB key authentication. The new feature can be utilized as part of a two-step verification – user will insert the USB key after typing their password instead of entering digits.

The feature requires a FIDO Universal 2nd Factor-compatible USB key, which can also work with other U2F authentication accounts, including from Google. Currently, the new login security feature is only available through a Chrome web browser.

USB key login will surely appeal to those who are worried about using their account credentials in a phishing attack. Users who lose their U2F key will still be able to access their account via an authenticator app or a text message.

Moto X Pure Edition lands in the US on September 3, Motorola says

A few weeks ago Motorola announced the Moto X Style, its flagship smartphone for 2015. Back then the company told us to expect the handset to make it to the US sometime in the fall, but under a different name – Moto X Pure Edition.

The new Moto X Pure Edition, to be precise, because there was a Moto X Pure Edition last year too – but obviously based on the previous Motorola flagship.

All branding confusion aside, today the company has finally unveiled the actual release date for the new Moto X Pure Edition in the US: it’s September 3.

This has been revealed through a tweet sent out by Motorola’s official account. Intriguingly though, it has since been deleted. So either someone jumped the gun and published that information too soon, or there’s a slim chance it wasn’t accurate – keep that in mind.

You’ll be able to customize the device as you see fit using the Moto Maker service, and order one that suits your tastes. The Pure Edition will be sold exclusively online through Moto Maker, though it will be able to work with the networks of all the major US carriers.

This Moto X Pure Edition will start at $399.99, unlocked. You can make the price go up by adding non-standard options in Moto Maker during the order process.

Like the Moto X Style, the Pure Edition comes with a 5.7-inch QHD touchscreen, a 21 MP rear camera with dual-tone dual-LED flash, a 5 MP front snapper with a LED flash of its own, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 808 SoC with hexa-core CPU, 3GB of RAM, 16 / 32 / 64GB of expandable storage, and a 3,000 mAh battery. It runs Android 5.1.1…

HTC Desire 526 and 626 are officially headed to Verizon

Last month HTC unveiled a bunch of Desire-branded smartphones for the US market, at which point we found out that some of them would be headed to certain carriers in the country too, in addition to being sold unlocked.

And today one of those carriers has come forward and detailed its plans. Verizon has announced that it’s going to sell both the HTC Desire 526 and the Desire 626.

The Desire 526 will be exclusive to Big Red in the US, it turns out. It will come with a 4.7-inch 540×960 touchscreen, an 8 MP rear camera with LED flash, a 2 MP selfie cam, 1.5GB of RAM, 8GB of expandable storage, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 210 SoC with a 1.1 GHz quad-core Cortex-A7 CPU, 4G LTE support, and a 2,000 mAh battery. It runs Android 5.1 Lollipop with HTC’s Sense UI 7 on top.

This model will become available from Verizon on August 13. You’ll then be able to get it by paying the full $120 price, or opting for 24 monthly installments of $5 instead.

The Desire 626 will be launched by the carrier sometime “in the coming weeks”. Unfortunately its price hasn’t been announced yet, nor a release time frame that’s less vague.

When it does land, it will sport a 5-inch 720p touchscreen, an 8 MP main camera, a 5 MP secondary unit, 1.5GB of RAM, 16GB of expandable storage, the same chipset as the Desire 526, 4G LTE too, and the same battery capacity as its smaller sibling – 2,000 mAh. It also runs Android 5.1…

Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 edge+ to have 3000 mAh batteries

The new Samsung phablet duo is almost here. As most of you surely know the Korean giant’s “Unpacked” event is set for tomorrow and the main stars will be the Galaxy Note 5 and the Galaxy S6 edge+.

The tidal wave of interest that both devices enjoyed resulted in more than a few leaks and we can safely say that we already have a pretty good idea of what the phones look like and what is under the hood. Still, there are a few unanswered questions remaining – one being the battery capacity.

Both the GN5 and GS6e+ sport 3000mAh batteries. http://pic.twitter.com/yHcWg8Hj75— Evan Blass (@evleaks) August 11, 2015

We now understand that both the Galaxy Note 5 and the Galaxy S6 edge+ will be equipped with 3,000 mAh battery packs. The info was confirmed by Evan Blass (commonly known as @evleaks), leaving a lot of Note fans a little disappointed.

The battery capacity for the two devices is pretty important, considering neither will offer replaceable battery. This means you can no longer bring a second one along and easily swap it out, so naturally fans are hoping to get as much juice as possible.

If the 3,000 mAh info checks out the Galaxy Note 5 will be the first member of the lineup to have a smaller juice pack than its two direct predecessors.

That doesn’t necessarily mean that the phablet will last less than the Note 4 or Note 3. The new Galaxy phablet will be equipped with Samsung’s own Exynos 7420 SoC, which is noticeably more power efficient. TouchWiz has also come a long way and is constantly optimizing battery life. The displays are another likely area of improvement and Samsung already has a track record of slashing power consumption with each generation of Super AMOLED technology.

Hopefully, the situation pans out for the best – battery life has always been a key selling point of Samsung phablets and it would be a shame for the Galaxy Note 5 and S6 Edge+ to be a step in the wrong…

Twitter removes 140 character limit from Direct Messages

Today Twitter has finally put into place a change it’s announced back in June. It was supposed to be launched in July, but here it finally is.

The 140 character limit has now been lifted from Direct Messages on the platform. This means your one-to-one messages can now be as long as you need them to be.

The feature will start rolling out today on the Twitter website, as well as in its apps for iOS and Android. You’ll also see this in TweetDeck and Twitter for Mac. The rollout is expected to take a few weeks before it reaches all Twitter users out there.

This doesn’t in any way change the character limit for actual tweets. That’s still 140 characters, and it doesn’t look like the company is even considering giving that up. But Direct Messages are now unlimited in…

UAProf shows Sony working on a 4K display for Xperia Z5+

Sony held back on screen resolution, staying on 1080p from the original Xperia Z to the Xperia Z3+ only going up to QHD with the Xperia Z4v. The company may be looking to jump to the front of the line with a 4K display.

A User Agent profile details the Sony E68XX group of phones. Those are expected to follow up the Xperia Z5 later on and bear the Xperia Z5+ name. The Z5+ is rumored to have a 5.5″ screen (or bigger), but even then a 4K screen will make for an insane 801ppi pixel density.

Alleged User Agent profile for the Xperia Z5+

The profile also reveals the chipset – MSM8944, aka Snapdragon 810. Overheating concerns aside, we have certain doubts that Adreno 430 can drive a 4K display. To avoid confusion about labels 4K is 3,840 x 2,160px, the same as an UHD TV and over double the pixel count of a QHD display (4x a 1080p screen).

Sharp has already announced a 5.5″ 4K LCD expected in 2016 though Sony could use a different supplier. ZTE may also be in the 4K race.

Bear in mind that User Agent profiles are not always to be…

Google’s Project Fi replaces your damaged Nexus 6 for just $100

Google’s become a carrier of sorts in the US earlier this year, through its Project Fi venture. Since Fi operates on both T-Mobile and Sprint’s networks, there are some hardware and software tweaks needed for a device to work with this carrier, which is why up until now the Motorola Nexus 6 has been the only supported phone.

Interestingly, it’s now been revealed that if you are a Project Fi customer and have purchased your Nexus 6 from the carrier, you can benefit from a pretty neat perk.

Namely, if your Nexus 6 becomes damaged for whatever reason, Project Fi will replace it for you for a fee of just $100, no questions asked. As you may have expected, there are caveats here. First and foremost, this is all a one-time thing. So you can’t keep replacing phones after the first one.

Second, your replacement request has to happen within one year of the moment you bought your Nexus 6 from Project Fi. After that, you won’t be able to take advantage of this…

Huawei Mate 7S confirmed for September 2 announcement at IFA

Huawei has two upcoming events in the next couple of weeks – on August 20 and the newly revealed IFA date – September 2. Many rumors suggest the manufacturer will announce a new Honor 7i flavor on August 20 in China, which will feature a sliding camera module.

The IFA event is now scheduled for September 2 and all new teasers hints for a Mate 7S announcement as opposed to the previously rumored Mate 8. Apparently the company will be upgrading its popular Mate7 flagship with new hardware but will be keeping the design. This means the leaked render with curved body for the upcoming Mate device is either fake or belonging to a different device.

The Mate 7S is expected to upgrade the chipset with Huawei’s latest Kirin 935 SoC found in the Honor 7 – an octa-core Cortex-A53 CPU, Mali-T628MP4 GPU and 3GB of RAM. It will also pack a 5.7″ 1080p display, a 13MP Sony main camera, a fingerprint sensor and Android Lollipop with Emotion UI.

The Huawei Mate 7S may also introduce a Force Touch display as per recent suggestions from company’s CEO and a teaser image, which may explain the slightly smaller screen size. But this is all just a speculation for now.

Anyway, Huawei will be keeping us busy in the coming weeks and we’ll keep you in the loop as the news unfold.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 leaks ahead of announcement

Tomorrow Xiaomi is going to unveil its next-generation MIUI v7 launcher, but many rumors put devices such as Xiaomi Redmi Note 2, Mi 5 and Mi 5 Plus on the announcement queue as well. And while we are waiting for the event to happen here is some more news on the upcoming Redmi Note 2.

The most recent leak shows the Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 in some blurry pictures, but with detailed specs. The latest information confirms the Redmi Note 2 will be built around a 5.5″ 1080p display and will utilize matte plastic for its shell.

The chipset to power the Redmi Note 2 is displayed by AnTuTu as MT6795 Helio X10 – this translates into an octa-core 2.2GHz Cortex-A53 processor, PowerVR G6200 GPU and 2GB of RAM. The rest of the specs include a 13MP main camera, a 5MP selfie snapper, 16GB expandable storage and a 3,020 mAh battery. Naturally, the Redmi Note 2 should run on Android 5.1 Lollipop with MIUI v7.

A retailer already spilled the beans on the Redmi Note 2 by jumping the gun yesterday and putting it on pre-order. Its listing, which has been revised earlier today, confirms all of these specs. Yesterday the page described the Redmi Note 2 as a 5.7″ phablet with a Snapdragon 615 chip, but today it just confirms the 5.5″ screen and the Helio X10 MediaTek SoC.

The listing asks $199 for the Redmi Note 2 on pre-order, which might be its official price for Asia. Tomorrow Xiaomi and Samsung are making big announcements, so it will be a very eventful day. Stay…
