Apple releases iOS 8.4.1 for all supported devices

Today Apple has started rolling out the latest version of its mobile operating system. iOS 8.4.1 is already on its way to all supported iPhones and iPads.

It follows the bigger release that was iOS 8.4, which came out at the end of June with built-in support for Apple Music, the new streaming service from the Cupertino company.

Since it’s an x.x.1 version, understandably iOS 8.4.1 has one sole focus, and that is fixing bugs. The official changelog makes this extremely clear.

Interestingly though, all of its improvements have to do with Apple Music. There’s a fix for an issue that could prevent iCloud Music Library from working, another for one that used to hide added music if the service was set to show offline tracks only, and there’s now a way to add songs to a new playlist if there aren’t any existing playlists to choose from (which sounds like something that should have been possible already).

A bug used to show different artwork for an album on different devices, and this has been squashed too, as have been several issues for artists trying to use Connect. Finally, tapping Love will now work as expected when you’re listening to the Beats 1 radio…

T-Mobile launches the Samsung Galaxy Tab A 8.0 on August 19

Alongside the just-unveiled Galaxy Note5 and Galaxy S6 edge+, T-Mobile has announced another Samsung device that it’s going to start selling soon.

We’re talking about the Galaxy Tab A, in its 8-inch iteration, which is now officially headed to the magenta carrier with 4G LTE support in tow.

The tablet will become available online and in “participating stores” starting on August 19. To get one you’ll pay nothing upfront, followed by 23 monthly installments of $13.34 and then one additional $13.17 payment in the 24th month. This all adds up to a total of $319.99.

The Galaxy Tab A 8.0 comes with an 8-inch 1,024×768 touchscreen, a 1.2 GHz quad-core processor, 2GB of RAM, 32GB of expandable storage, a 5 MP main camera, a 2 MP front-facing unit, and a 4,200 mAh battery. It runs Android 5.0 Lollipop.

Verizon unveils Galaxy Note5 and S6 edge+ pricing, pre-orders

Not long ago we shared pricing information from three of the big four US carriers for the newly announced Samsung Galaxy Note5 and Galaxy S6 edge+. The only company that had yet to present its offer at that point was Verizon.

And now the carrier nicknamed Big Red has finally decided to give us the full pricing details for the two new phablets.

The Galaxy Note5 with 32GB of storage will be $32 per month for 24 months using Verizon’s installment plan, adding up to a total of $768. If you go for the 64GB version, you’ll need to pony up $864 upfront, or $36 per month spread over two years.

For the Galaxy S6 edge+, the 32GB model is going to be $696 or 24 monthly payments of $29. The 64GB iteration will cost $792, which you can divide in 24 monthly installments of $33.

Both devices go up for pre-order online starting at 3 PM ET today. Unfortunately Verizon hasn’t mentioned when it will start shipping the pre-ordered units, nor when you’ll be able to simply go to a store and grab one on the spot. On the other hand, the carrier has announced that starting tomorrow the two handsets will be on display in certain “participating stores”, for those of you who want to take a look at them before pre-ordering.

Verizon will offer the Galaxy Note5 in black and white, though the latter color will only be available for the 32GB model. The Galaxy S6 edge+ will come in gold (just for the 32GB version) or black.

For a limited time, if you trade in any smartphone in working condition in order to buy a Note5 or S6 edge+, you’ll get a minimum of $200 off. Additionally, if you bring your number to Verizon from another carrier, you receive $100 bill credit within 2-3 billing cycles after each new smartphone you purchase and…

Here are the first Samsung Galaxy Note5 camera samples

As you surely know by now, earlier today Samsung finally made both the Galaxy Note5 and the Galaxy S6 edge+ official, after many weeks filled with leaks about these two devices.

We’ve already gone hands-on with Samsung’s new flagship duo, but one of the things you’re surely eager to find out is how the Note5’s 16 MP camera performs.

To show you exactly that, we’ve grabbed three official camera samples from the device, and shot three more ourselves. In the gallery below, the first three images are those provided by Samsung, while the others are ours.

Samsung Galaxy Note5 camera samples

As you can clearly see, the Note5 seems to have a well-performing camera on its back. It appears to be the same unit found in the Galaxy S6 pair, which has been among the best in the mobile world this year.

Unsurprisingly, Samsung is continuing in that vein with its latest phablets too. The camera in the Galaxy S6 edge+ should be identical to the one in the Note5 (and probably the S6 duo too), featuring the same f/1.9 aperture as well as optical image stabilization and auto real-time HDR.

We will of course put the Note5’s camera through a lot of testing for our full review, but until then we thought it a good idea to give you a first taste of what it’s capable…

Samsung Galaxy Note5 will not launch in Europe this year

With all the leaks we’ve seen in the past few weeks, neither the Galaxy Note5 nor the Galaxy S6 edge+ have really managed to surprise us in terms of specs or looks after finally getting announced by Samsung today.

But here’s one thing we assume no one expected. The Galaxy Note5 will not be sold in Europe. Not this year, anyway.

Seriously, Samsung will only focus on the US and Asian markets with the Note5, at least at first. There’s still a chance that it will be officially brought to Europe next year, but at that point it will be quite a few months old, so it definitely won’t have the same appeal.

On the other hand, you will be able to buy the Galaxy S6 edge+ in Europe. In fact, pre-orders for this phablet are set to start in the UK on August 18, which is next Tuesday. It will be released on September 4. Pricing hasn’t been unveiled yet, but that information will surely arrive soon.

Samsung seems to think that people in Europe are less in love with the S Pen stylus and the software features that differentiate the Galaxy Note5 from the Galaxy S6 edge+ than those in other parts of the world like the US and Asia. It remains to be seen whether Samsung phablet fans actually agree with this…

Samsung Pay goes live in South Korea on August 20, US to follow

Samsung Pay, the company’s mobile payment service, which is meant to compete with cash and plastic, and not rivaling solutions, is on the verge of its public launch. It will first be available in South Korea starting a week from now on August 20. Next in line is the US market, where Samsung Pay will launch on September 28, with beta testing to be carried out in the meantime.

Samsung Pay relies on a combination of NFC and MST (Magnetic Secure Transmission) technologies. While the first one requires updated terminals, MST is designed to work with existing ones thus making it compatible with every terminal, where you can swipe your bank card, or so Samsung claims. The security of the transaction is guaranteed by fingerprint recognition, Samsung Knox and storage encryption.

So far, the devices that support it are the Galaxy S6/S6 edge, and the just-announced Galaxy Note5 and Galaxy S6 edge+. We witnessed it in action and by the looks of it, it works effortlessly, but you can see it for yourself in our hands-on…

Samsung teases round Gear S2 smartwatch for IFA announcement

Just minutes before today’s Unpacked event wrapped up, we got a very interesting teaser – a round smartwatch with entirely new interface. It’s the Samsung Gear S2.

Unfortunately the “one more thing” will be properly unveiled at IFA in Berlin on September 3. For now we just saw a glimpse of the all-metal Gear S2 and its new user interface.

From what we saw in the short video we know the Samsung Gear S2 will pack a heart-rate sensor and will be very much fitness-oriented. The icons look suspiciously familiar, but that’s another topic.

The Gear S2 will go official in Berlin in less than three weeks, so the wait won’t be…
