Samsung Galaxy Note5 and S6 edge+ found to aggressively close tasks in the background

If you’ve used the Galaxy S6 or the S6 edge for any appreciable amount of time you’d have noticed by now the phones have a habit of aggressively closing apps in the background even when there is no real shortage of system memory on the devices. This means, every time you go back to an app after a while it loads again instead of just quickly resuming state from the time you left it.

Unfortunately, having even more RAM seems to have not made any difference to the behavior, as both the new Galaxy Note5 and the S6 edge+ do the exact same thing. As you can see in the video above by Android Police, the Galaxy S6 edge+ is much slower at resuming apps than the older Nexus 6 and also doesn’t resume state as well. The same behavior is reported seen on the Note5 as well.

The exact reason for this is still unknown. While there is the theory that this could be done to save power, the problem is having to start apps from scratch every single time the user requests them instead of just pulling them from memory uses a lot more CPU cycles, so any power saved by removing the apps from memory is nullified and it’s likely the end result is greater power consumption. Samsung would definitely have a better idea as to what exactly is happening here but it’s unlikely the company will comment on the…

Microsoft Lumia 940 and 940XL rumoured to launch on October 19

While there have already been reports that Microsoft’s upcoming flagships, dubbed Lumia 940 and Lumia 940XL, will be unveiled in the month of October, looks like now we have a possible launch date for the devices.

According to a report from NPU, the handsets will be unveiled on October 19 in New York. Not only this, the report also says that the Surface Pro 4 tablet as well as a new Microsoft Band could also be introduced at the same event alongside the flagships, something which is in-line with what we’ve already heard before.

For those who aren’t already aware, the flagship devices were earlier said to be named Lumia 950 and 950XL, but recent reports have suggested that they’ll be dubbed Lumia 940 and 940XL instead. Needless to say, none of this has been officially confirmed by the company, so take it with a pinch of salt.

This comes just a few weeks after an image (see above) showing a prototype of either of the two flagships surfaced…

Samsung Galaxy Note5 battery life test

Samsung surely raised a few eyebrows by equipping the Galaxy Note5 with a smaller battery than its predecessor. The newcomer’s 3,000mAh unit is also non-removable, so we were quite curious to put it through the rigors of our battery test.

The Note5 started off its run through our battery test track by recording twenty eight and a half hours of talk time before its battery called it quits. That’s the exact same score as Samsung Galaxy Note 4 and a result worthy for a flagship.

Listing reveals Huawei Mate S to come with Force Touch

The Mate S, Huawei’s upcoming smartphone which is expected to be unveiled at this year’s IFA event in Berlin next month, could come with Force Touch technology. This was revealed in a listing that recently appeared on OppoMart.

If you aren’t already aware, the Force Touch technology allows the device to distinguish between a light and a strong touch, enabling it to react differently in each case. Apple’s upcoming iPhone 6S smartphone is already rumoured to come with this kind of display.

Other specs revealed by the listing include home-grown Kirin 935 SoC, 5.7-inch (1080 x 1920 resolution) display, 3GB RAM, and 64GB of expandable internal memory. In terms of camera, the handset features 20MP rear unit and an 8MP front shooter.

It packs in a 4100mAh battery, and runs Android Lollipop version 5.1 with Emotion 3.1 UI running on top. There’s also a fingerprint scanner on board. The listing also reveals a price tag of $599.

Lumia Camera app found to work on non-Microsoft hardware

Apparently, the Lumia Camera application for Windows Phone 8.1 works with non-Microsoft hardware. The application has been found to work on the likes of Huawei Ascend W1 and Samsung ATIV SE.

However, not all Lumia Camera functions work on the above mentioned smartphones. Tweaking shutter speed, focus, and switching to the front-facing camera are said to make the app crash on non-Microsoft devices.

Regardless of the app’s limitations, we reckon that it still offers plenty of functionality to make it worth trying out. If you are among the few Windows Phone 8.1 users who don’t use a Microsoft device, head over to the Microsoft Store to try it out.

As you probably know by now, Lumia Camera will be the default photography app on Windows 10.

Pac-Man 256

Pac-Man 256 is a reimagining of the classic Pac-Man game and created by the same people who bought you Crossy Road. You play the game mostly the same way, moving around the grid by swiping on the screen, trying to eat as many dots as possible, collect items and avoid the ghosts. In this game, as you play, the bottom of the grid keeps collapsing so you have to keep moving upwards and as you play you move faster. There are also powers to collect, which give you additional abilities. It’s a lot of fun and although some elements are lifted straight from Crossy Road, including some sound samples, it’s still pretty cool game overall.

It all began with a failed rice cooker – a glimpse at Sony’s history

It’s a well known fact that Sony, a multinational conglomerate head-quartered in Tokyo, Japan, is one of the leading brands in the consumer as well as professional electronics market today. However, what is not widely known is how it all began. In this article, we’ll take a brief look at the company’s history – it’s journey from the beginning to where it is today, as well as some its milestone products.

The Beginning

Around 70 years ago, in the year 1945, defense contractor Masaru Ibuka established a company called Tokyo Tsushin Kenkyujo”(Totsuken), or Tokyo Telecommunications Research Institute. This was the time when the World War II had just ended. Ibuka’s firm operated from the third floor of the damaged Shirokiya Department Store (shown below) in Tokyo.

Although the company mainly focused on radio repairs, it also came up with its own product: an electric rice cooker.

Made by interlocking aluminum electrodes connected to the bottom of a wooden tub, the product lacked innovation, and mostly produced either overcooked or undercooked rice – the result depended on the type of rice as well as the quantity of water used. Overall, it was a failed attempt, and the cooker never hit the market.

Tape recorders and transistors

In May 1946, Ibuka joined hands with former naval lieutenant Akio Morita to launch a new business called Tokyo Tsushin Kogyo K.K. (Tokyo Telecommunications Engineering Corporation), also known as Totsuko.

Based in Nihonbashi, Tokyo, the firm was started with an initial investment of 190,000 yen (around $1,500 today), and also incorporated Ibuka’s radio repair business along with its entire staff. Totsuko focused on research and manufacture of telecommunications and measuring equipment.

The company’s first creation was a ‘Power megaphone’ that went on sale in October 1947. Three years later, the firm launched Japan’s first magnetite-coated, paper-based recording tape, dubbed Soni-Tape.

A few months later, the country’s first magnetic tape recorder, the G-Type was also launched. Interestingly, the device was viewed as a product for government use, hence the G in G Type.

The product didn’t sell well initially, primarily because people knew little about tape recorders and how they can be useful. This led to Ibuka and Morita personally visiting places like government agencies, schools, and universities to market the product, and convince people that they need one. Eventually, their efforts bore fruit, and the product sales picked up.

The very next year, Totsuko launched the P-Type portable tape recorder, which was not only smaller and lighter than G-Type, but was also less expensive. It was also commercially successful.

In 1952, Ibuka and Morita learned about transistor (developed by Bell Laboratories) on their trip to the US. They wasted no time in applying for its license, which they obtained in 1953. Given the fact that transistors were a smaller, durable, and less expensive alternative to vacuum tubes (which were used in Totsuko’s products till now), the company started working on a small radio that could be carried in hand or pocket.

Meanwhile, with an aim to go global, both Ibuka and Morita decided to have a short brand name that could be easily remembered – they zeroed down on SONY, a mix of the Latin word “Sonus” (which meant sound) and “Sonny”, an American name for boys mostly used in 1950s. This happened in the year 1955, when the company finally released TR-55, the country’s first transistor radio. Measuring in at just 14 x 8.9 x 3.4cm, the device was an instant hit.

The Sony brand became immensely popular, so much so that the company changed its own name to Sony Corporation in 1958. A couple of years later the company launched a transistorized television, and also established trade offices in the US and Switzerland.

The early 1960s saw the company developing transistor based products including the TC-777 amp tape recorder, world’s smallest and lightest TV dubbed TV5-303, country’s first stereo amplifier, the TA-1120, as well as the TC-357, a tape recorder featuring automatic recording adjustment.

In the second half of the decade, Sony launched products like its first cassette tape recorder, the Magazine-matic 100 TC-100, world’s first IC radio, the ICR-100, as well as a Chromatron-type 19-inch color TV, 19C-70, and…

Meizu m2 note battery life test

The Meizu m2 note turned out a capable fella even though it came with an inferior chipset compared to its predecessor. The m2 note still relies on a big 5.5″ 1080p display and a MediaTek tech, plus it’s powered by a beefy 3,100 mAh battery.

We’ve seen the m1 note do reasonably well in our battery life test and we were eager to check how the m2 note stacks against it.

The 3G talk test was a blast – the m2 note lasted a notch below 21 hours, which is a noticeable improvement over the m1 note.
