YouTube Gaming, Google’s answer to Twitch launching today

Over a couple of months after it was announced, Google’s YouTube Gaming service – its Twitch competitor – is set to launch today in the US and UK. At the time of announcement Google said that the service will become available “this summer.” ”

YouTube Gaming will be available on the Web as well as mobile (Android and iOS), with the former set to go live at 10am PT, while the apps will be available starting 1pm ET and 6pm BT.

If you aren’t in the know, the service will feature gaming-related videos and live streams, powered by what Google calls “the biggest community of gamers on the web.” Over 25,000 games will each have their own page containing all the best videos and live streams about that title. There will also be channels from game publishers and YouTube creators.

Samsung Galaxy Note5 stylus reportedly jams and damages phone when inserted the wrong way

The S Pen on the Note5 might have a design flaw. As discovered by Android Police, if inserted the wrong way, it could get stuck and cause permanent damage to the phone.

The S Pen on the Note5 is uniformly shaped throughout, unlike the styli on the previous Note devices. This means it goes in easily either way without much resistance. The problem is, if you accidentally do insert it the wrong way, the stylus goes most of the way in and then gets badly stuck in the phone’s holding mechanism, making it difficult to pull out without the help of tools. If you do manage to pull it out, the stylus detection mechanism on the phone – which tells it when the stylus is inserted or removed – stops working permanently, as Android Police discovered on their review unit.

The latter part might not happen 100% of the times. According to Ars Technica, the mechanism did stop working on their unit but putting it back in the wrong way somehow made it work again, which wasn’t the case with Android Police’s unit.

Samsung’s response to this is to read the manual. Unlike the manual that came with the previous Note devices, the Note5 manual specifically advises against placing the S Pen the wrong way inside the phone, meaning Samsung was well aware of the issue and the things that could happen if the user were to put the S Pen backwards but instead of altering the design decided to add a warning in the manual instead.

While one could argue that anyone who inserts the stylus the wrong way deserves what’s coming to them, no one in their right mind would do it on purpose. It’s an unlikely scenario but in case someone manages to do it, it would have been better if the stylus simply didn’t go in or even if it did wouldn’t get horrible jammed and possibly damage the phone in the process. That seems like a way too serious a penalty for a simple mistake.

Anyway, it doesn’t seem like Samsung is going to do anything about it as the company has covered its tracks in the user manual so it’s not like they don’t warn you about it. As a user, you just have to be careful not to put the S Pen in the wrong way, which applies to many things in general.

PayPal’s instant checkout service One Touch now available in 13 new markets

PayPal’s One Touch service, which launched in the US last year and arrived in the UK and Canada early this year, is now available in a total of 16 markets. This was announced by the company’s global head of merchant and next-generation commerce Bill Ready.

The 13 new markets where the service has been extended include Australia, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and Turkey. PayPal says that eligible merchants in these markets won’t have to do anything to enable the service as it will happen automatically.

One Touch, as the name suggests, allows you to make payments with a single touch, hence eliminating the need for user-names and passwords each time you pay. The only condition being that the device should be same.

Oppo R5s arrives in the United States with $220 promo price tag

Oppo R5s is now available to order in the United States directly from the Chinese manufacturer’s online store. To mark the mid-ranger’s launch Oppo has also given it an attractive $220 price tag until Thursday, August 27.

With a body that’s only 4.85mm thick, Oppo R5s is one of the sleekest smartphones available today. Its specs include a Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 chipset, 3GB of RAM, 32GB of built-in memory, and 5.2″ 1080p AMOLED display.

At $220, the R5s appears to be a no-brainer to pick over Moto G (3rd gen). However, it is important to note that the newcomer lacks support of 4G LTE bands in the bands in the United States. The smartphone is also running Color OS 2.0 that’s based on a rather old Android KitKat.

Archos unveils three new smartphones, one runs Windows 10

French smartphone maker Archos loves to flood the market with multiple devices at once, and it’s done it yet again. Today it’s unveiled no less than three new handsets, though, in fairness, two of them are actually identical in terms of hardware.

What sets the Archos 50 Cesium and the Archos 50e Helium apart, then, is the software. Namely the fact that the former will run Windows 10 Mobile when it launches, while the latter sticks with Android.

So the Archos 50 Cesium gets to be one of the first Windows 10-running smartphones ever to be made official. It comes with a 5-inch 720p touchscreen, an 8 MP rear camera with LED flash, a 2 MP front snapper, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of expandable storage, and a 2,100 mAh battery.

It’s powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 210 chipset, boasting a 1.1 GHz quad-core Cortex-A7 CPU and Adreno 304 GPU. Its dimensions are 147 x 72.5 x 8.5 mm. It has dual-SIM functionality and 4G LTE support.

The Archos 50e Helium will ship running Android 5.1 Lollipop, but is otherwise identical to the 50 Cesium. Both of these phones will cost £99 unlocked and SIM-free, and they’ll be out in November.

The Archos Diamond S, on the other hand, features a 5-inch 720p touchscreen with Gorilla Glass 3, a 16 MP rear camera with LED flash, an 8 MP selfie shooter, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of expandable storage, MediaTek’s MT6753 SoC with a 1.5 GHz octa-core CPU, and a 2,300 mAh battery.

Here too we find dual-SIM functionality built-in along with 4G LTE support. The Diamond S runs Android 5.1 Lollipop. Its dimensions are 152.6 x 76.4 x 8.4 mm, and it weighs 118g.

It will be priced at £159.99 in the UK when it becomes available in November. All three smartphones will be showcased by Archos at its booth at the IFA trade show in Berlin at the beginning of…

Facebook Moments now auto-creates movies from your photos

Back in June, Facebook launched a new app for iOS and Android called Moments. Its purpose was to make sharing pictures from events with friends very easy. Today, Facebook Moments has received a big update, taking it to version 2.0. This is already available in the iTunes App Store and should make its way to the Google Play Store before the end of the day.

The new iteration brings with it support for auto-created videos. Namely what this means is that for moments with at least six photos, the app will automagically create a movie for you – one that’s ready to be instantly shared to Facebook, of course.

The movies can be set to music, and you get to choose from about a dozen options here, depending on the mood you’re in – things like “inspired” or “happy” are in the list of music backgrounds.

Moving on, a new moment can be created by simply tapping the plus button at the top right, and the progress of your photo uploads is now easily trackable.

Facebook Moments has been translated into 34 languages, and it should be available in many more countries than before. With the 2.0 release, it’s also received the usual assortment of bug fixes and performance improvements, thanks to which you’ll see improved upload…

HTC A9 (Aero) gets photographed in the wild looking like an iPhone

The HTC Aero has been a constant presence among mobile world rumors for around two months. That said, we’ve never actually seen it before in live images.

Yet thanks to a leak originating in China, we can do just that now. What you see below is said to be the upcoming HTC flagship smartphone, the one that’s supposed to turn the tide for the struggling Taiwanese company.

And it looks almost exactly like an iPhone. HTC probably only decided to put the camera dead center on the phone’s back in order to (hopefully) avoid a lawsuit from Apple. Had it not done that, it would have been almost impossible to tell this handset and an iPhone apart, at least when looking at their backs.

On the front fascia, things are a bit different, and the prominent HTC logo helps too. The HTC Aero has been rumored to be marketed as the HTC A9 when it launches later this year.

We get no new leaked specs this time around, but previously outed ones include a QHD touchscreen with Gorilla Glass 4 and 2.5D curved edges, as well as a rear camera with f/1.9 aperture. The A9 should be launched in the US by AT&T and Sprint (at least). It’s due to be announced in October and will hit the streets in November.

This is what the Samsung Gear S2 looks like on someone’s wrist

Samsung will finally announce its first round smartwatch on September 3 at IFA in Berlin. In the meantime, the Korean company has been teasing its next wearable, outing various renders showing it, and even a promo video of sorts.

What we haven’t yet seen however is what the Samsung Gear S2 actually looks like on someone’s wrist. Well, here it is now.

This image was posted on Instagram by Dennis Miloseski, a Samsung VP who is Head of Studio, Samsung Design America as well as Head of Samsung Mobile UXCA. So it’s obviously legit. Furthermore, it aligns perfectly with the teaser images that the company has released so far.

According to previously leaked and rumored specs, the Gear S2 should come with a rotating bezel, a 360×360 touchscreen, an Exynos 3472 chipset with a 1.2 GHz dual-core processor and a 450MHz Mali-400 MP4 GPU, 768MB of RAM, 4GB of storage, Bluetooth 4.1, GPS, an accelerometer, a gyro, a barometer, a heart rate monitor, and a 250 mAh battery. It will run a special version of Tizen.

Motorola Droid Maxx 2 smiles for the camera in leaked live images

It really wasn’t so long ago when we first heard that the Moto X Play would in fact be headed to the US, contrary to what Motorola said at its launch. This was alleged to be hitting Verizon at some point in the future, just rebranded as the Droid Maxx 2.

And here we are, not one week later, glancing at the first leaked images of this smartphone. Not only that, but we’re talking live pictures here, the kind that someone snapped in the wild – where at least one Droid Maxx 2 prototype is living, apparently.

The design is incredibly similar to that of the Moto X Play, if not bordering on identical. What is different, obviously, is the big Verizon Droid branding on the back – but that’s to be expected from this particular carrier.

As you can see, by peeking underneath the back cover the battery capacity of the handset is revealed, as well as its camera’s resolution. Unsurprisingly, both of these are identical to the ones of the Moto X Play.

Furthermore, the person who sent these photos also released screenshots of the device information screen in the CPU-Z app installed on the prototype. They too confirm that this is just a rebranded Moto X Play.

It has a 5.5-inch 1080p screen, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 SoC at the helm (with an octa-core CPU clocked at up to 1.65 GHz), 2GB of RAM, 16GB of built-in storage, that 21 MP camera, as well as the 3,630 mAh battery. It runs Android 5.1.1 Lollipop of course.

The fact that these leaks are coming out now may signify that we’re getting ever closer to the official introduction of the Droid Maxx 2. According to past mumblings, it should be complemented in Verizon’s portfolio by a Droid Turbo 2, possibly based on the Moto X Style – though not much is known about this one yet.

Acer Liquid Z630 and Liquid Z530 leak ahead of announcement

Acer is going to unveil at least four new smartphones at IFA in Berlin next month, but we now can shed some light on those. Previously we were tipped about those being Windows-powered smartphones, but apparently that’s not the case.

Acer Liquid Z630 already showed its face via the GFX’s database, but we can now reveal everything about the smartphone. It’s an Android Lollipop-powered handset with big 5.5″ 720p IPS display and MediaTek MT6735 chipset. The SoC offers a quad-core 1.3GHz Cortex-A53 processor, a Mali-T720 GPU and 2GB RAM.

The rest of the Liquid Z630 specs include LTE connectivity, dual-SIM telephony, 16GB storage, an 8MP rear and an 8MP front snapper, and a 4,000 mAh battery. The expected retail price is €200.

Acer Liquid Z530, comes with a 5″ 720p IPS screen and the same MediaTek MT6735 chip with 2GB RAM. LTE connectivity is also available for this one and the expected retail price is around €140.

Previously we saw an Acer S59 leak, which has the same display and SoC as the Z530, but oddly two high-end cameras with 4K video recording. Maybe the GFX was wrong about the cameras, as we doubt the MT6735 can handle more than 1080p video capturing and the S59 is in fact the upcoming Z530.

The two Liquid smartphones, among with at least two others, will premiere in Berlin next month. We’ll be there to follow up on those, so stay…
